Thanks to that sword you gave me, I just beat the UFO boss. Silver armour is definitely a requirement. Also the only blocks he can immediately destroy is dirt (and sand/gravel probably). Other harder materials slowly get damaged as if you were mining them.
Nice! So you're ready to progress in to the Steel tier then Beta has grassland and jungle planets, which are quite interesting-- grasslands are especially awesome because they tend to be more settled and less hazardous to navigate (But at the same time they can be pretty deadly).

Managed to kill that fething robot on the 5th attempt. I even managed to lose one without even activating it. The scaling needs some work on the bosses if the only way one can reliably kill one is via glitching.
Is there any way to find or make a new backpack? I started as a human, but wound up with a Floren one. On another world I found the same backpack, so I'm assuming that they're out there.
Managed to get a bit more time into Starbound.... lots more dying ensued.
However I finally got an iron anvil, iron seems to be very sparse, guess I need to venture underground more. Managed to find another weapon in a chest, sadly it sucks as its way too slow.
When the rich rage war it's the poor who die
Armies I have: Chaos Space Marines, Tau, Necrons, High Elves
Armies I want:Lizardmen, Warriors Of Chaos, Dark Eldar
Armies I may get: Dark Angels, Tomb Kings, Vampire Counts
Found a place with guns. Sadly, they all suck for my level.

Try going to another, slightly higher level planet. Level two to four will have more iron than level one. And if you're just digging and are careful about it (making a hut and diggin down from the hut's floor, bringing lots of wood platforms to climb back out, etc) you should be safe still.

The new banking feature: Pixel storage. You lose something like 20-40% of pixels through this storage mechanism, but at the same time, they're going to increase the penalty back to 30%, so after two deaths that's still worse off than the storage device.

If you're in need of ores either go to a desert planet, or one with flesh biomes. The sand physics mean that any ores pop to the surface once you've dug out a few blocks. Flesh biomes apparently spawn more ores than normal, so you may want to look there too. Though I've never really had much of an issue when looking for ores myself. It may be down to your level, but you aught to find enough ore if you go into the deeper caves.
I bought a revolver this morning. Now I am god. *
* Until I get bitch slapped by a mob that's five levels higher than me.
Meh, I'm cruising around on level thirty planets, killing mobs in three hits while dying in one-- the game is NOT balanced AT ALL right now. Either your armor is completely and utterly useless, or it's completely and utterly overpowered.
I'll be glad once the rebalance hits.

Yes, I have rather noticed the imbalanced. I've found that with my own character that their weapons far outpace their armour in terms of damage to damage recievable. I can get that they may want the game to have that survivalist style, but having to run half way around a planet to get to a dungeon, only to be killed by a generic mob right outside of it can be annoying *. The difficulty of finding the rarer ores, ie diamonds, on the lower tier planets is a tad annoying as well. By this I mean that certain resources that are needed for your current tier items aren't available in large numbers within that tier's system. Once you leave that system they suddenly become much more widely available. I can deal with that, ie the better planets are more secure, but certain ores could be more common, or at least have some way of making them easier to find (hell its the future, why can't we just artificially create diamonds?).
* Which is to say that the player spawning system is completely arbitary. You're in a space ship. Land the damn thing on top of the dungeon, not on the other side of the planet.
I cleared out a prison, but I died like 12 or 20 times doing it. The disappointing part was I didn't get much loot. The update coming soon will help with combat, but I think after that they will need a second update to solve the other problems with combat. Like the enemies being crazy aggressive, well being totally stupid.
Yeah, loot is pretty lame most of the time. Only places that seem to have good loot is Apex dungeons, which often have a single piece of loot at the nd that's worth having... if that much.
The 3d printer is also too expensive.

It'd be nice if we could sell the loot that's found. Right now I don't think I've found any weapons that were better than the ones I could already make, so there was no reason for taking them. If we could say turn them into pixels via a recycler or just sell them to villagers I'd regard those items as more than junk. =/
By the way, the 3D Printer in your ship is used for any tech you can't craft-- such as Cheap Lights from an apex dungeon, or tents from bandits and etc.

Oh earlier Wyrmalla helped me identify a bug with the server. Mainly that new players are trapped in their ship and can't beam down, but can teleport to other players in their party. This basically means new players can't do anything without help from someone who was playing before the most recent patch. They even need to hitch a ride to travel to different planets, because accessing the starmap crashes the client for them.
I've tried a number of things, but it looks like a universe reset may be required. (Beta fun times).
However, first I'd like to wait for the patch that they've been mentioning might be released today, and see if that fixes the problem before we go deleting the world.

If it doesn't, let me grab all the hi-tech stuff I made and put it on my ship. The crafting stuff mostly.

The new "balance patch" (Annoyed Koala) is out. I've updated the server, but can't test it until later today.
Feel free to test it yourselves before then. Try connecting with a previously working character and with a brand new character.
If brand new characters still have no world beneath their ship, I'll want to try a fresh universe when we're ready. It might be possible to re-import worlds into the fresh universe from backup, but will still be a good idea to take anything precious to your ship just in case.
The latest changelog is always in the game launcher (although there is no launcher on Linux, it just goes straight to the game), or you can go to: http://playstarbound.com/launcher/
Changelog for v. Annoyed Koala 9/12/2013
- HUGE balance patch, every item, creature, armor and weapon rebalanced. Leveling system entirely rewritten
Although the balance is early the new leveling system, the system is much better than the old one and we can
now improve balance over time.
- Added early implementation of creature taming (more features coming soon)
- Added new mining items
- Added new weapons
- Added new throwable items
- Added grappling hook
- Added new boss and new sector of the galaxy
- Added a stance system to weaponry, not currently used but will allow us to
add secondary attacks to weaponry very soon.
- Tons of new sounds
- Guns more common in tier 3
- Underground detached/rare biomes more common
- Underground random encounters more common
- Underground chests more common
- Ore rebalance (probably way way too much ore at the moment, will be fixed later, enjoy it)
- Baby monsters
- New monster palettes
- Added pixel compressor for high cost banking (idea from Ncrpts)
- Disable using the beamaxe to light caves underground
- Added new hats
- some monsters now graze on grass (can look ugly, needs finishing)
- Small bipeds now socialise with eachother
- All the monsters behave smarter and are less likely to get stuck
- You can no longer attack through blocks
- Fix the game on XP (hopefully)
- Tons more fixes and smaller additions
-
Cheers, I'm not at home at the moment to check the game itself and the Starbound site doesn't work here (for some reason) so that's pretty helpful.

Oh, wow!
I always found a lot of copper, but Iron and the the precious metals haven't been so common in the Alpha section (though I'm playing coop so we're sharing out what we make with the ores so far)

15 minutes in and frustrated already. I have the second quest. Ya know, kill an animal and cook it. Made a bow, killed an animal, got meat, made a campfire

no recipe for cooking the meat.
What am I missing Dakka?
Go to the campfire and 'use' it, drop the raw meat in and you can cook it. There's no explicit recipe, but you need to be used to 'using' tables and things to craft things (which is quite a bit different to Terraria).

Can't. They are gone.
Which is annoying, I'm gonna have to be figuring out which of the saved alpha worlds is my character's base now, I have them still saved but meh!

Yep, and make sure you're trying to cook it in the campfire, not the furnace. I keep trying to cook meat in the furnace (blame Minecraft), but it only works in the campfire.
If you have the campfire and another interactable item close to each other, sometimes it will select the one closest to your player rather than the one you clicked, so try standing close to the campfire too.
You can also try moving your mouse over the campfire.
