You know there's a problem when you have to start sorting through/condensing collections just to reduce the amount of space they occupy, buying cases, clearing out room for the cases. It's the hours of fairly non-productive work and hundreds of dollars that could be spent actually completing past and current projects rather than just making room for more that it starts becoming apparent.
Planning out projects ahead of time is key, knowing how large it is going to be, making provisions for cases ahead of time and in general trying to avoid surprising for your future self.

Storage cases are not a waste of time. They are the best - they keep your hard work protected and organized.

In other news, I inventoried my BFG stuff. Roughly 2.5k points Imperial, 2.5k points Chaos, 4k points Eldar, 500 pts Orbital defenses.

I have 6 separate Ikea shelving units completely full of gaming stuff, a dining cabinet, two glass display cases and a half dozen GW hard cases crammed full of minis and I still have loose stuff piled in every corner of my room. I very likely have several times my body weight in gaming stuff. Then there's all the equipment I use for my resin casting business which takes up another full room.
I was getting seriously overwhelmed during the holidays and have finally started clearing out some of the stuff I never use. I've been building up my collection for 25 years and finally decided it has to get under control one way or another. It's hard picking out what stays and goes as there's so many good times in there but when it has an inch of dust on it from non-use it's hard to justify keeping a lot of it.
When you start counting the collection by how many file boxes it occupies it's a good indicator you've gone a bit off the deep end. My bits collection for 40k is 4 file boxes worth of bits all out of box and cut off the sprues then repacked in baggies to save space. It's a heck of a lot of parts for stuff I don't even anticipate building.

You know you have a problem when you're buying more stuff knowing that you'll likely never need it but it's too good to pass up (North Stars mystery bags, I'm looking at you here).
More worrying, I'm redoing the hobby room (It's turning into the main bedroom) so I'm going to have to actually take it all out to sort.

Not sure if this thread makes me feel not-alone or quite sure that I have a problem.
I purge the collection of random odds-and-ends a few times a year via TMP, Dakka and Bartertown, but the collection really seems to shrink. I've got a porch full of gaming stuff and I'm often finding things I had forgotten I had. The problem is that alot of it is really large toys and models that I purchased with the intention of turning into terrain, but never quite got around too it.
Doesn't help that I just finished adding 4 big tubs of buildings that I finished up for a recent convention game.

Hit that point at some... point.
Every time I wandered close to a GW store, I'd always be drawn in to buy something. Glad I stopped before prices got too high. I just proxy all my armies now.

I think several recent actions have made me realize I had a problem:
I found six landraiders with terminators that I had forgotten about.
I found my stack of unbuilt IG was both taller and wider than I am.
We are planning to move and in straitening the house I found four unbuilt forgeworld Warhound titans, and an unbuilt Reaver titan.
My buddy asked me if I could play a 20K Apoc game, and I realized I could play Imperial or Orks.

I'm not sure it's the same problem, but I opened a box today expecting to find supplies, and found a pack of Fenrisian Wolves that I patiently assembled and prepped this month and managed to forget immediately.
I think I'm running parallel to "too many things" with my "too many things on the boil at once."

Yeah, forgetting about Forgeworld Titans is pretty impressive.

I once sat down and realized that I now have 37 Titans, Gargants, Eldar titans, and other super heavy walkers in 40k scale.
If that wasn't bad enough, I've actually made plans for a future home remodeling that includes space for a large gaming table, storage, and construction table/painting area.
Although my wife did veto the built-in spray paint booth with exhaust fan.
Nice collection of stuff! I'm always glad to see people with vas
I just want a large, multi-purpose gaming table with inset playing level, built-in storage. The tricky part is that I want it upstairs, so that somewhat limits the dimensions of the components, as I would have to build them in the garage, but assemble them in the room. I'm also seriously thinking about display wall cabinetry for additional storage when I remodel the room.
Heh, the voice of reason asserts itself!
Ikea has some very affordable display storage cases. A few friends and I all own them, and use them in our game rooms. (glass fronted display cases are notoriously expensive).
The inset table idea is really cool, you might want to see if you can play on one first, as some players don't care for them in person (you might be fine...but until you try...).
For example, doing actual LOS checks can be tricky...and some players don't like not having an edge for playing things (reserves, etc.).
best of luck with the game room!

Thanks on the Ikea pointer.
I've played on inset tables before, and it's very nice to be "above the action" - I feel more like a commanding General surveying his troops. I do like that the dice stay in the pit, and being able to place reserves, etc. literally out of the fray. I kind of predate the TLOS thing, with area terrain and such, but I do own a laser pointer, if someone insists...
It'll be a while before I build anything - got a lot of other house projects to work on, first.

Hopefully finishing off painting two carts (one's made out of a car) and a shack for Fallout. I started the shack ages ago for a tutorial I made, so ah, It'd be nice to have it actually finished so I can bung it in that thread instead of the temp image that's been sitting there for months. =P

Well, I think my moment came when I realised I have a partially painted 4K point Skaven army, an unpainted Goblin army at around 1.5K points, an unpainted 1.5Kish HE army, a Necron army I got from a friend at around 2K that needs re-doing, several Chaos units including a Noise Marine band that I am assembling, a nearly finished IG army (lacking some units), a German and a British BA platoon's that are half done, a crap - ton of other stuff that needs finishing and I had just gone and purchased a load of oldhammer from the local market.
And thats just the stuff Ihave the will to count

I think the only thing I "took too far" gaming wise, was when I first started to get back into gaming in the early 00s.
I bought enough Epic Imperial Guard miniatures to do a Soviet-Styled Sci-Fi Regiment on a 1:1 scale (roughly 5,000 miniatures).
I sold most of them when I realized that I would never have a gaming table to be able to field a Regiment with a reasonable ground and time scale in the game (it would need a ground scale of something like 1mm = 10m, and a time scale of one turn = one hour for the infantry to be able to move more than a few mm a turn).
I kept an entire Reinforced Battalion (4 Infantry Companies of 4 Platoons - 3 regular Infantry Platoons of 4 Squarda of 12 men, and one weapons Platoon per company - and a Support Company for the main Battalion, plus an transportation company, Supply and Logistics Company - the rules I use have resupply as a part of the game - and an Air-Support Platoon and the Battalion HQ, which was about the size of a large Platoo). I suppose that is still technically Two Battalions in size, but it is still much smaller than the Four Battalions plus HQ of the original Regiment.
I might still be a little out there on my LotR miniatures.
Even though I detest Peter Jackson's Middle-earth, I still have enough of the miniatures to field a substantial army from each Nation. The largest being the Moria Goblins (something like 700 of those.... I should probably sell some off, I probably only need around 300 of them). And I still buy more figures to be able to fill out units for which GW never made figures (having to do a LOT of conversions - like swapping heads on the Perry Crusader/Norman Archers with WoMT so that they look more "Gondorian" to use as Archers of Morthond Vale... Oh! And replacing their bows with Longbows).
But Middle-earth is an obsession I have had since Heritage first held the license for Middle-earth figures.
It is my primary gaming obsession.
