Subject: Wild West Exodus Miniatures Game - The Ongoing Kickstarter News and Rumors Thread!
it may not have been improved by having Romeo dump a whole new bunch of characters and plot elements to be included after the book was basically finished requiring a major re-write
I'm not convinced it would make Craigs writing of the lack of editing any better, but you're right, it couldn't have helped.

@Cincy I'm intrigued on what in Craigs writing you did not like (or in the book in general). I had some questions about the "walls of the sandbox" that I asked Craig about, but overall I was very happy with his writing. I thought he did a good job building the main characters (Loveless / Jesse / Frank / Courtwright) and also felt he hit some key character traits that authors tend to stumble on really well (i.e. Jesse's irreverent sarcasm).
Does the genre not click with you, something specific in Craig's writing, or something else in the book in general that you are not enjoying?
To be honest, I'm only about 100 pages in because it's such a chore to read so far. For starters:
- the editing is piss poor. There are significant number of errors in every chapter so far, and either Mr Gallant doesn't know how to correctly use a semi colon, or his editor incorrectly fixed/inserted them
- there's a ton of passive voice used in the first 100 pages that is, simply put, poor writing.
- Mr Gallant's writing grossly overuses simile and his vocabulary choice reads like a high schooler trying to "smarten up" the prose. Neither of them make the writing feel organic at all. There are words used suddenly that don't feel like they have any business being there. They read like he looked them up in a thesaurus.
- while I understand its part of the universe, the constant use of RJ-1027 in the prose is awful, especially in the context of characters. I have trouble believing that the over-colloquialism using Jesse James and his gang wouldn't have a slang term for it.
Honestly, overall so far it reads like something you'd find submitted by a high school kid on Dakka. Maybe it'll get better, but I'm not holding my breath.

I had an early reviewer copy of the book and have not seen the final book yet. I did not find the editing to be a chore to work through but now I definitely want to take a look at the for sale book to see how it compares. To be fair, unless the punctuation is wildly off I may not notice though, and as for semi-colons.... well.....
I can agree with the RJ-1027 use, it did break up dialog during the book. It was something I was able to accept and mentally tuck away to keep from breaking my immersion or detracting from my enjoyment.
I read on the iPad so am not sure where the first 100 pages falls. I do know that the opening scene with the packet boat was discussed in the book review and Craig mentioned it was added later in the writing/editing process. I would be interested to find out if your opinion changes after that scene (if your not already past it). I'm not sure if your going to keep reading, but if you do let us know.
As a point of curiosity (and because I am looking for some new series to read), what do you read normally?
Thats actually good to know that the opening scene was a last minute job, because it's lack of editing is significantly more egregious than anywhere else so far. I mean, it's not a good 'excuse' but it's at least an explanation (albiet a weak one).
I'm through chapter 5, so I've been able to chug along through that, and I'm going to try and knock out another 4-5 chapters today over lunch.
Last 5 books I read, in no particular order:
Unremembered Empire (Horus Heresy) - Dan Abnett
Into the Storm (Privateer) - Larry Corella
Ocean at the End of the Lane - Neil Gaiman
Telegraph Avenue - Michael Chabon
Vulkan Lives (Horus Heresy) - Nick Kyme

Abnett, a gem I was happy to discover when I got into 40k.
Updates last couple days:
Still Trapped in Customs Hold Update #143 Oct 29, 2013
Spoiler:
So the latest update as of today is that we are still in customs hold. Ya, I know. No need to say anything. We are just as pi$$ed as you guys.
The customs broker told us that the printed material is what flagged our container. Having things printed in China seems to really upset the world order so they tend to pull those. I guess they think that will keep companies from taking printing overseas.
No matter the case they put our wonderful WWX container into a special holding zone while nice California employees open up all the boxes looking for who knows what. This normally takes about 2 to 5 work days.
Again, this is what is being told to us so we are just posting as we here it. As soon as the green light is sounded we will update as normal. More to come.
How Retailers Can Carry Wild West Exodus Update #144 Oct 30, 2013
Spoiler:
Hello WWX fans,
We are almost at that point when we can start shipping the product. With tracking numbers just a few days away we wanted to reach out to our great fan base and community with some news.
As you can imagine once these great models start showing up on door steps people will go crazy for WWX. We need your help to spread the word to all of your local game stores. Some store owners have not heard of Wild West Exodus or Outlaw Miniatures. It's our job to get out there and tell them how to get started.
We made it very easy for stores to carry WWX. Not only do we have great discounts but a monthly prize support program and even a money back guarantee when you first bring in the product. All we need store owners to do is contact Rik at the following phone numbers or emails.
He will take it from there and get them started with an awesome new produce.

I lost a lot of interest in the horus heresy over the last couple books (the blood angels book and Angel Exterminatus). They felt like they were drifting over the line of too much "Oooh Space Marines are cool" and away from an engaging story to me. I also think I am one of the only people in the world who is not in love with Abnett's writing. He's a good author, but his writing style does not grab me.
I have not jumped into Neil Gaiman for a long time, since Good Omens and Stardust. I might have to go back to his novels and see if any grab me.
Alpharius wrote: I think that 'trapped in Evil Customs' will soon be a somewhat abused 'reason' for KS delays soon, if not already...
Yeah, hope that isn't too much the case.
I'm expecting that the WWX stuff will start shipping next week-ish. At this point, for me, the question is whether or not I'm going to get WWX before I get Z-Cide 2.

Update on the container situation, 2 more days until it's released.
Update #145 Nov 3, 2013 The latest news on the container.
Spoiler:
Here is what we have as of today. We got an email from our broker who told us that customs pulled our container for two reasons.
1. We had an incorrect packing list. Somehow the shipper put a specific number of boxes in the container but the actual count was higher. The numbers not matching ended up costing us days in customs because they had to unpack the entire container and check each box.
2. We shipped printed material (our rule books) and they got selected as a paper product. I guess this is a major cause of concern for incoming shipments because of bugs that can make their way into the paper materials and invade US trees and plant life.
The good news is that they did say it would only be two more business days until our container is released. This is the first time we got a hard number from them. If this is true and they stick to this information we should have the container in our warehouse by next Friday. Wednesday it would clear, Thursday it would travel from California to Arizona, and Friday we unpack and sort the goods.
Fingers crossed that we have this happen as explained. To hold everyone over we have uploaded a few more images just to keep you guys somewhat calm. Sorry for these dumb delays. It will all be worth it in the end.
In Jesse We Trust.

TL;DR: By Monday backers should start seeing tracking information and details on their shipments.
Update #146 Nov 7, 2013 Customs Released Our Container!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Spoiler:
Jump on those iron horse saddles WWX fans. The news is in. Our container released from customs and is set to arrive in Arizona tomorrow November 7th. As you can imagine this news is long overdue. We are just as excited as all of you. We can't wait to get going on shipping and packaging all of these great minis. Please be patient with us as we open up the items and inventory the goods. This should only take a couple days and we have our crew coming in over the weekend to get it done. By Monday backers should start seeing tracking information and details on their shipments.
We have no specific order that we are processing the packages. We feel that everyone is important that backed our project so we are just pulling from the top of the list and shipping them out. Understand that once this process starts it may take up to two weeks before everything is out. Our hope is sooner but you never know how things can turn out.
For our international backers we plan on having half of our crew putting together all of the international orders to ship via sea freight asap. We think most international customers should start seeing packages arriving early December but our goal is to have them to you as soon as possible.
We have never done this before so the system we have in place to get all of these orders correct may not be as smooth as we think. We just ask that everyone is patient with us. We promise to move as quickly as our enlightened constructs can move.
We will also post some pictures of the shipment tomorrow once it arrives and we rip open some of the boxes.
With this awesome news we felt it was only fitting to get you great backers, fans, and supporters a sneak peek into Decembers releases. Remember that in December each faction will get a new boss model to lead their men.
Stay tuned to the forum, facebook page, and the official WWX home page for images and stats on each boss. These will go up November 15th for pre order and will ship in December with a December 15th street date.
We are finally there everyone. Awesome, awesome, awesome.
