Fantastic! Could you buy toy-type christmas trains for flatcar trucks? or will it be fully functional o-scale train?

The idea is that it will "run " on o scale track. Still not sure about adding an engine. I want to get through all four to five cars first.
As far as buying a she'll. I thought about it but nothing looked cool enough and I could scratch build and kit bash for pennies on the dollar.
Two leman Russ kits, one chimera, and lots of bitz have already been sacrificed for the greater good.
I am sticking with just buying the wheel sets. I am just hoping I can find some second hand ones at the train show.
You will never actually see them so I am open to mixing and matching.
Keep the comments and suggestions rolling in.

One side of side skirts. not clued until I get the wheel set and make the final pass through cuts. The skirts will be cut to cover the wheels and still protect the underneath. It looks boring straight across.
I added the barricade and new side rail. Enjoy.
Feedback is a huge help please

I'd like to see it on tracks so it can be an interactive piece that moves 5d6 every turn or similar, with a major hit for things hit, blocking Los and movement, dropping extra ammo, etc. I do think a smaller car on the back with a quad gun would be sweet as well.

Hi, long-time model railroader here.
First, here's an ebay search for full o scale trucks (not just wheels, the whole shebang):
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=&_osacat=19145&_npmv=3&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0&_nkw=trucks&_sacat=19145&_from=R40
Secondly, doing an search in O scale can find out a lot of banged up cars, old cheap plastic stuff that no one wants. Gondolas and flat cars and tank cars are great for 'instant model base'.
Try this search:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=&_osacat=19145&_npmv=3&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0&_nkw=lot&_sacat=19145&_from=R40
Finally, this search may ALSO be of use to terrain people...
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=lot&_osacat=19145&_from=R40&_npmv=3&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0&_nkw=bridge&_sacat=19145
Hope this helps everyone.

Glad to see this thread bumping to the top of my sub list again. I know IRL has ups and downs so I'm glad I'm around while you're back in action.
I can't add anything more than Brian did. I was going to do some eBay research because I've scored some excellent terrain bitz by looking for 'O Scale'
5 cars? That's a ambitious project for sure. Hoping you the best of luck on that.

Thanks buddy. Considering I'm not on a time crunch and this has been a dream of mine for awhile I'm confident that five cars is not as hard as it may sound.
Three of the cars will be simple and two will be heavily detailed I will be knocking out the three easy ones first.
My goal is one per month and then painting.
Keep the comments coming.
I'd also like to hear what kinds of cars you all would want to see!?

Looking good and love the idea. Theres a old anime called Laputa flying island in the sky, its a great film. Very steampunk motif to it, but theres an awesome armoured train in that too wich i always loved the idea of. You mite wanna check it out simply for inspiration as the train itself massively looks like something the IG would have nicely tucked in their weird and wonderful variations of vehicles.

Way better than my idea of a armored personal car. Make a Caboose!
And maybe sometime down the road, a giant rail gun!

Isn't a caboose and a troop carrier the same thing?
Not being a smartass I'm really not sure .

Nice project......it reminds me on the scene of the "Space Marine " games when you have to fight the orks on a train! the platform, there were damn big and the train incredible.....
btw.....i think you have to make it large, so soldiers can move from the front to the rear of the wagon freely. how it is now, thins can't happen!

A Caboose is a crew-car at the end of a train
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caboose
A troop car would look just like any other coach car from the outside

I will note that dedicated 'troop cars' were built out of boxcars.
Most war trains do not have end cars such as a caboose. Instead, they have a locomotive at both ends, in order to facilitate rapid movement.
