Here's some more Cassius goodness..

Basic idea for his crozius, the top bit is a banner top I bits ordered..I decided against the purity seal..

I chopped it down to size and re added the bottom bit as a nice stopper thing..pinned the wrist as it's not a huge contact point and it'll help me get the right pose..

Not sure if the crozius is a bit bit big, might trim the length and clip the wings, I'll see what it looks like when the rest is assembled..

Made a rock he can have a foot up on to be able to fire down contemptuously on his foe..

I shaved off both holsters on his thighs (slimming) and I'll add his book to one side..I added a U to his knee as well..

I cut off the cabling either side of his 'neck hole' (technical term)....I'll be putting some of that Zingle wire in it's place..

Next I put in a base for his collar which will slightly obscure his face a la Mk VIII armour..I also shaved away the back 'collar' so the raised ring will be a flat circle...

Not sure whether to have a seal on his belt or..

This terminator honours/rosarius..answers on a postcard pls....think I'm leaning towards a purity seal..

Edvard Munch backpack gets built properly..

So this is a badly posed shoulder pad less basic put together of him so far, it's practically impossible to hold this many bits together (especially with resin) with blue tack and it collapsed moments after this pic was taken. It gives an idea of what it will look like but hopefully less terrible than this, posing will account for a lot with this model.

I'll be adding chest cabling leading to a central skull and his book. The neck plate will be built up too. these will be next, so stay tuned..

Hope you like it, it's still very WiP, C&C welcome!

Looking great so far and a nice mix of bits.
I don't think the crossius is too big, the shoulder pads will do a lot to make it seem smaller.
The seal didn't look good there, it was too chunky and static (maybe a skinnier one would be better, there are nice ones in the GK kits, I'll have a dig) but maybe you'll need a bit more detail in the handle somehow, first thought is lizard skin maybe done with a crackle medium like the Gw earth specialist paint or just gs.

Good call on purity seal over crux on the belt. I think it looks far better and will give you a nice spot colour to break up the rest of the black and gold/silver?

Neck hole in armour could be a gorget? I dunno?

Keep fiddling.

Everyone: No.

That's what she said...

Thanks I'm glad you like it, I think you're right re Purity Seals, blobs of red will break up the black nicely.

The haft would look better but to skin it with GS and have it look even and then carve a design into it without it being lopsided would be pretty tricky. I'll wait till he's mostly done before I decide what to do with that..

I've got a bit further and will post up more pics soon, I also managed to snap off some pics of my finished 2nd squad of Devs, stay tuned for them too..

Is there space for both the terminator honors and the purity seal? A chaplain of his seniority should have both, and multiple seals at that. I do like the seal on the front of the belt from the two pictures you posted. Is there space on the back of the belt for the honors? I might also put a purity seal on his leg (a common place for them) and depending what you do for the shoulder pads, possibly there as well.

Yes I agree, I did try placing it on his belt to the right (our right) of his grenades and I think that will work. Yes definitely more seals to go, I'm running out but I think he deserves bespoke gs ones any way, then I can fit them in fiddly areas better, I think all the places you said would be great to add them. He has plenty in the concept art.

Here's the latest shots..

I added the detail to his gorget..not sure if I think it's come out well enough so I might hack it off and revisit it...the blob on the thigh is to be the base for his tome, I'm going to make it a big book to help balance out his silhouette.

All the bits together as this first stage completes..

Chest cabling, Zinge wrapped wire again, it's good stuff..

Blurry shot..I don't want to sculpt on the little rib bits onto the cabling do you think it works without them?

Central skull added and first layer of detail on his book has gone on too. Purity seal is blue tacked on and crux/rosarius is just visibile to the right in their likely final positions.

Should I shorten the Crozius? The bottom looks slightly too long, do you think in needs texturing? does the top need trimming?

C&C welcome.

Here's the concept art again..

Here's a few more quick snaps for your delectation...

His book has a little Aquila and a carapace cover for the spine, I might paint it in blue and purple al a Space Hulk (1st Ed) Stealers as the book is clearly supposed to be Nid skin...not sure what the book is, maybe its a signed copy of 'The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole' (if they released it in a 'Stealer Skin special edition).

I've put pins in each arm to help pose and give strength, I've bent out the bolter arm pin to give a wider stance...I also added a GS seal on the right leg (as we look) and there'll be more. I'm thinking of doing a seal under the central skull and building a chain going down into the book, like on the original model, but GS chains are a pain to build, can one buy chain that small?

Death to the Xenos!!!1!! He's starting to come together now. His Crozius arm is looking better and is posed nicely, I've just GS'd another seal onto the other leg and the bolter arm in place, I can then look at siting his shoulder pad correctly and adding a seal or 2, then I'll need to do the other arm and maybe drop the backpack a bit as it looks a little high..

Shall I add that extra detail to the torso (seal and chain) not sure if it need it..maybe it does..

Thanks for looking, let me know what you think...

So in the process of uploading a couple of pics to the gallery on my phone I manage to click the 'disable all voting on every pic you have' button (why does this exist?), I love votes and views on my stuff and the only way to restore it is to manually click every check box on every pic individually. I have 1335 pics in the gallery. FML. At least I don't seem to have lost the votes, I reset the marine gallery already. Now taking volunteers...

So I think he's pretty much built now. I shortened the crozius bu about 3 mm on the bottom and then reattached the end bit, I trimmed the wings down too. I added a chain going down to the book, they're pretty hard to sculpt well so I just did a basic job, it'll look ok painted. I put a small skull on the other knee. The shoulder pads are both attached and I did little flexible join bits around the armpits. There's a purity seal on the gun arm pad too. Finally I added a little bit of hair (no really visible here) as per the art.

I'm pleased how he's come out and will start painting soon(er or later).

Hope you like.

Just had a minor supply drop, will cover that and the Devs I finished next. After this guy is painted I plan to do my converted Sternguard/TWV unit so look out for that next.

Here's another update..

I finished my 2nd unit of Devs. Yay. There are 2 guys who were transferred from the original unit and have been replaced with some generic 'I <3 my bolter guys and the old Sarge got a signum. I'm pleased with new unit.

I like how this Sarge has ended up, I didn't think much of the model when I got AoBR but with these changes I much prefer him.

New lascannon and old spotter (from other unit). Note spotter is also helping out hauling RL reloads (helpful chap) I imagine them all doing this like a WWII squad all carrying a mag for the Bren.

Other new lascannon and new spotter. They both have the same head with fancy eyes and antennae to help them target and communicate, the spotter has a scope off a scout sniper rifle.

Rocket launcher and helper. This RL (and the next) were done to let me convert my other Devs into a 4 RL squad and so are oldish, painted in the early days of the 5th ed book. The loader is new and inherited the slung bolter backpack off the old Dev unit's Sarge. He also has reloads magclamped/selotaped to his leg.

RL and old loader, another defector from the other squad all renumbered and happy in his new home.

Hope you like em. I started painting Cassius today hope to finish him soon, then onto the converted Sternguard I've ben tinkering with since 4th ed.

I used purple to echo the 'Imperial Purple' of Rome and play on the Classical undertones of the Ultras, also I wanted to avoid the cliches as much as poss..here it is on a Captain and Command Squad..

Though it does tend to divide opinion.

I have to disagree. I love the dark green and purple you use, instead of the glaring red I see on many ultramarine armies (and sadly on many dark angel and wolf armies as well) which I think look too garish and remind me of the Red Age miniatures in all the wrong ways.

Totally got the Rome and Royalty connection with the color and totally love it.

The Chaplin really comes together great when fully assembled. That wire looks very good.

I'm also looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the new Astra Milis... erm, Imperial Guard book and what changes might occur for your PDF force.

This book?

I ordered a Hydra/Wyvern too and I plan to make them interchangeable. I ordered them direct off GW so I could get this guy..

Schwing, I like this dude and I intend to include him in the 'Masters of the Chapter' formation..

He's also huge (in height, I don't know about anything 'else')...

You can leave off the 'Skulbard' as well..

I plan to use the code to get the other one (overpriced as it is) to eventually flog NiB on ebay, they seem to be going for ok money ATM hopefully better later.

Glad you like the Chaplin, he's been basecoated and I'll have a little time off soon and plan to hopefully finish him, I've also started on my Sternguard (and building the Hydra mwha hahaha) pics soon..

As to the new Codex, I think it's really good. The obvious things to be nerfed were nerfed (Vendys, Chimera) and some stuff got a bit cheaper (Arm. Sents, Specialist officers) but overall more stayed the same. Tauroxes are a WTF and Scions a lot of noise about not much (I've read their book, you basically just need a copy of the Warlord Traits and their Orders and that's it. a £30 book is almost totally superflous, though it's selling really well on ebay already!). Ogryns are another WTF why make a new kit and still over cost them? Also they're pretty ugly (not in a good way).

I don't plan any major changes, I look forward to running Tank HQs and Pask occasionally (who is now a beast) I really want to run my RT era Astropath as an actual Astropath now and I'm thinking of getting a 'Mr Headache' to run as a Primaris. The access to specialist officers is great but look forward to all the boring players spamming 3 Primaris Lvl 1 Divination Psykers in every single game, yawn, that will get tedious fast.

I was amazed at the rage of IG players in the (now locked) rumourz thread, some amazing nerd rage at what will be a (mid) top tier book (I predict), the book has access to the holy grails of this edition; re-rolls to hit and 'Ignores Cover'.

All the rage and spam aside you can make a nice guard list and have it be very flavorful and interesting now, there's room and uses for Psykers, Enginseers, Priests (the other thing that will be abused) and infantry and tanks are probably at their highest point. The cheapo Russes are interesting look forward to seeing a lot of those...

I hope to get in at least 1 2k game this weekend I'll report my findings (if any)..

I was aiming for bulky, I think he'll look ok still. I was toying with the idea of ading some under arm cabling but was unsure about getting it to fit right.

Dreadclaw69 wrote:Fantastic work!!! So much better than the stock model

Thanks! I love the idea of Cassius but, as you say, the stock one is just so bad.

Managed to snap off some ok pics of him finally done...

FOR THE EMPRAH!1!!

I washed the armour with the old black ink I'm slowly running out of, which has a highly gloss finish (making it hard to photograph!). I added progressively larger amounts of Shadow grey to black to highlight it, probably about 4-5 stages.

Relic bolter 'Infernus'. Quite pleased how this came out, especially considering it was just the AoBR one lying around in a bits box.

I added the laurel wreathed skull to his shoulder. Think it came out well.

Mash up face. The original model shows him as basically a zombie but the new concept art shows him with much more flesh. The eye is white like in the concept art and I added some old scars where he's been raked by claws. His skin tone is getting a bit washed out by the light I'm shining on him.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with how he's turned out, the posing never got quite right but it'll do. I'm looking forward to clubbing some xenos to death with him.

Love to hear your opinions.

I might post him in the 'Your best conversion' thread too.

Cassius and sternguard, two great tastes that work well together. Particularly vs. nids. Preferred enemy and special ammo is a very nasty combo. Just because the Tyranic War Vet dataslate was overpriced and underwhelming does not mean we can’t field the TWVs using the basic sternguard rules.

Scourge of Xenos. It’s not just a fancy title, it’s a way of life.
