Cool stuff, what size pen is that? Or is there only one type.

Micron pens range from 1mm all the way down to OMG.

A standard set is 0.5 0.3 and 0.1

They really are a great tool for your kit, great form panel lines, black-lining, shadowing, and squiggles.

They sound interesting, not noticed them before. Might treat myself to some...I think to write on that scroll it'd need to be in the OMG range.

So now the Cassius shaped log jam has been cleared I've started on my Tyrranic War Vets or Sternguard. I was gifted some Marines by midlifecrisissuit and some were partially converted to be quite battle damaged. I separated them out to be a veteran unit and put the less exciting bits towards my early Tacks. He was going for a desert themed chapter, hence the orange. When the 4th ed book dropped just after inside was the awesome TWV unit, finally a cool Codex entry specifically for Ultras! I immediately decided to make a squad. It was about this now I got hold of some GS for the first time and started to experiment with it. These guys are my first serious goes with it. I never really finished them and when the 5th Ed book happened I was glad I never finished the HB conversion I had slated and finally completed the unit of 8.

These guys have been snapped apart and re built to greater or lesser extents..the left guy has a scout strappy bolter fitted with ammo selector and bayonet, the other has a combat scope and drum mag, also a CCW made from a gaunt claw.

Lefty also has a shotgun he likes to keep handy for 'close encounters'. I also changed all their backpacks to be the big skull ones all my officers and Sarges have, no line troopers.

Next 2, lefty has a custom bolter in the 'cock and balls' pattern, it's got a 'C mag' made from a pair of RT space ork binocs and scope (also another tiny scroll on the bolter!!, I'm not going to write on it!!) he has another guant knife. The other guy has a sickle mag off a RT bolter and is regarding a ripper head in the same manner as this rather excellent Mark Gibbons concept art (which was a big influence seeing as the models weren't released for a while)..

Battlefield repairs to rightys arm can be seen here..

Painting has begun finally expunging the bright orange from my shelves *phew* and has progressed a little further too..I won't get much time to press on but I'll post when I can, I've another 4 built which are slightly more recent and accomplished (in the gallery if you want to skip ahead but I'll post them up soon) but ultimately these guys have been sitting around for years awaiting their day in the sun. I really like SG/TWVs and am glad I've finally got round to them, hope you like!!

These are shaping up really nicely.

Love me some drum mags. Btw, love that M.(funky) Gibbons art, never seen that pic before, but it was his Blood Axe Kaptain that inspired my choice of Clan.

It's a great pic and I think towards the end of his tenure as GW artist, I've always loved his stuff too. It was especially nice then to see a UM looking pretty badarse in the art for once.

The knee/lower leg armor on the left is great. I'd love to see you do that in gs.

The knife through a nid head logo is the mark of the tyranic war vets. It's found on the shoulders and a couple of the legs of the TWV minis that GW makes. While I guess he could scratch scuplt it, it might be easier to do a leg swap or press mold it from the offical minis.

Do you have any of the TWV minis? Every Ultramarine player should, they are nice looking models.

I've made the 'Sword thru Nids' on a few of them, others have the 'sword thru Ultra U' as well, also a Nid Hunter symbol. I do like the GW TWV models but I like to make my own. I just looked and at £20 for 4 off GW I'd rather get the new Tack box for an extra £5 and just GS the detail, I made these guys about 6-8 years ago and I'm much better with GS now (very time consuming though).

I know, I wasn't aware of them at all.

I'll post this now but start on the pics for the other 4 TWVs...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
None of these are great pics but they get across the ideas..

These 4 were the later ones..Here we see the Death Watch sniper. He has a SPR (special purpose rifle) variant of the bolter converting it into partial sniper weapon (like what real life infantry do). It's got the suppressor and scope of a scout rifle and the magazine off a pistol, also a small ammo selector. He's got a lethality award of a skull on his trigger hand and a DW shoulder pad. His head is off the old (and excellent) Captain multipart kit (I think there are 3 heads in this unit off that kit including this next guy). Righty has a GS torso based on the MG art, with the 'sword (well gladius) thru U' symbol. He's got a M203 style combi weapon as I much prefer those. I added a scroll to his shin and a strap made from a IG flamer strap.

Give us a twirl..

Left has the emblazoned left shin guard, it's pretty small but is the small as the MG one off the above pic (my pic doesn't really show it well), his bolter is from the 'Master of Recruits' from the 'Masters of the Chapter' box. He has a small guant knife and some added helmet studs (kinky). Righty is the unit 'sarge' (more of a 'first among equals' really as they're all sarges) he has an original metal Necron leg used as a bionic one (don't tell the Inquisition) and a tiny claw from his bolter forearm (pre converted by MLCS). His chest has a curled Nid form with requisite sword thru it going to a 'U'. His bolter is an older variant, I tried a RTB01 one there but it looked too small, this is a 'Strike Force' metal-plastic hybrid era one. I added a drum mag and strap.

He's also got Terminator honours hanging from a chain. I added damage to his space hat and a bionic eye. His shoulder has a Stealer claw nailed to it as a trophy from the beast that mauled him badly (requiring all the bionics) but clearly didn't manage to finish the job. I wanted to make it look like he was limping along but still a lethal purveyor of vengeance...

His shoulder pad had a 'winged skull' on it (another pre conversion from MLCS), which is (of course) the symbol for the IG, I snapped off the wings when I was dusting these guys off to start work on the unit and replaced them with this laurel. I also built a slight gorget to cover the odd angle the helmet attaches to the torso at. I also finished the bolter which above can be seen blue tacked together.

I would like to do some more of these dudes as they were excellent fun to do. They're all laden with grenades, pouches and honours in a distinct contrast to my regulars which were intentionally left less adorned. I might indeed boost up this unit and split it into 2, I would consider the GW ones if I find them well cheap, otherwise I'll just build my own.

I hope you like them, more and better pics will follow as they start to get painted (which is going to take a while), so bear with me.

Stay tuned for more Xenos killing goodness.

C&C welcome as always (helps me stay inspired to find the time to carry on!).

Thanks! Your stuff is really high quality so that means a lot. I'm getting a background burn for IG too...I'd like to add a Primaris, a Priest and either more standard infantry or a Conscripts blob (I wish they could take flamers still). I have the new Hydra to build as well (want to magnetise it to be able to be a Wyvern). Must.Stop.Getting.New.Toys.Have.So.Much.To.Build.Anyway.Gnnnnnnnn. The new Cadian box (the £100 one) was such a good deal through discounters it took serious willpower not to get one...(ooh I'd like a Punisher {magnetised to Executioner} and Basilisk as well, possibly another Hydra/Wyvern..). I need help.

Funny, I lost one on my school bus..........(joking).
I'm glad you like them. It's exactly that 'old school' feel I try to evoke with a lot of my projects. I love these old guys, so much character, but the scale and quality of the sculpting just won't sit with the newer stuff, so you have to make your own! I really like all these guys and owned the 2xPF guy at one point, though I think he was released into the wild (eBay).

Alex Kolodotschko wrote:These guys are looking awesome, won't be playing against them though as the shotgun isn't wysiwyg.

I was using the 'Unbound' rules....

Started painting these guys, still early days and probably won't get a chance to do much more for a while. I wanted them to have a non uniform appearance, so some rims will be gold, white, silver or just blue. I'm not sure what colour to do the ripper head here, I was thinking Space Hulk colours but that would just be more blue, or Alex's yellow but that might be too bright?, Hive Fleet Behemoth also has blue carapace. I might just do it purple to tie in with the purple I have already in the army and the forthcoming company standard. Any thoughts welcome.

There are some areas of brown kit too, only my officers and veterans get space leather. I'm wondering how to paint there guant 'crys-knives' and I was thinking of the old GW horn painting thing, wheres it's a gradation from brown to bone with longitudinal lines of Bleached bone/white runiing along. Only tried it once (didn't work) so am unsure....otherwise it might look a little bare as it's a large area. Suggestions on a postcard.

He's probably seen 'the other' website that our members are very active all over....

 RandyMcStab wrote:

Oh great, more rules for me to not read. I'm really having trouble figuring out when you're making them up at this stage.

That ripper head could look okay in my scheme but, you're right, the yellow would probably pop too much.
If you glossgored it up with some red and did some darker dried blood colours as well you may be able to knock it back a bit.

Those longitudinal lines would probably look pretty weird on the knives, they tend only to work on round things, antlers, horns, majick wands etc
Probably better to see how some people paint their scytals and go with that.
Will the knives infer the same lack of bonuses that they currently do for nids scytals or do the unbound 'rules' make Space Marines better at using them than Tyranids are(n't)?
I'd imagine that's the case. Ho hum. :twiddles thumbs and waits patiently for the disappointment in 8th ed in July:

Re: the Ripper head, I think either your yellow (as I have used yellow as a spot colour elsewhere) or Purple not sure still. I did make a bit of viscera hanging out of the back of the head so some gore would be natural (even though I normally find painting gore a smidge gauche), do Nids have red blood? Shall I get a vat of BftBG? Strip naked and cover myself in it? Then run down the streets shouting "UNBOUND!!!"?

I may have digressed..

Re: the claw knives, I think you're right as they are not round objects. I may just paint them a basic 'bone' colour. #

The knives will confer 'Rending' for Marines.

Perfect, just make it old rending (on the to hit roll), they need their initiative buffing too imo.
I'm really struggling to forge a narrative when they're not better than Genestealers in combat in every single way.

Well Marines should be better at CC than stealers (apparently).

So been busy recently had not had much time for toys, boo, but I did manage to progress a bit further with these Vets..

Paint paint..

Here they are nearly done. I'm going to finish each of them individually as there's lots of detailing etc for each guy..

They're all going to get individual insignia which will obviously be on the theme of the veterans cross..

Damn you glare, but you can see the finished Crux, it's come out ok. I used a few washes of ink to shade it a bit.

I've actually finished him and his mate now and will do the pics over the next few days, I've got the other 2 of this group of 4 up to nearly done standard and they're awaiting detailing.

Hope you like, more soon...

Ta Da! First guy finished. They will all be BATTLE DAMAGED! but this guy in particular has been through the wringer. The Vets have white bolter casings as well as hats to show their 1st company status. I've been trying out the new fangled way of doing chippng where you use a highlight version of the base colour to deliniate where the chips are, I think it's working ok but I'll need more practice.

Side shot. Shows his fancy Crux on his shoulder well. I went with a basic bone on the guant knives, think it works fine.

Other guy done too, the 'Regarding Nid Head' guy based on the Mark Gibbons art above. Went with a purple head in the end to tie into the purple in other units.

Bolter with RTB01 magazine for that extended look, he has another spare under his arm attached to his 'belt'.

Side shot showing damage and hasty repair to arm. Their unit insignia will vary from trooper to trooper.

I'm pleased with them so far and look forward to this unit finally being done as they've been hanging around for years. The next 2 are near done and await detailing more on those as I scrape time to finish them.

Hope you like these dudes...
