Cool, thanks! I'll try it and see if it works.
I also need to finish designing a new skin for my Steve. I'm trying to make him look like Jeff Bridges character The Dude, from The Big Lebowski.

An underground railway would be good. For an example, you can go to the one here http://www.darkinnit.com/dakkamap/#/-1985/64/1075/max/0/0 . Also, keeping them in a straight line as much as possible helps. I don't make mine that deep so it's not much of an issue, but when I come to a cave I continue through it and just build up cobblestone around the tunnel where it goes through the cave. The depth I have it at is pretty good, though you'll want it deeper if you start a station on a mountain. It would also be cool to have above ground stations at the entrances.

It's just that the amount of iron for even a one-way rail is incredible, when you're talking about the distances we're doing. I once tried a 2-way system on another server- it was essentially impossible.

If we also have a collaborative mining project, it should be fine. A few people with iron pick axes can clear out a large area very quickly.

Now, using railways for mass transport of goods via chest carts- that's something. That's actually what the one major one-line railway is for- because a lot of us need hundreds of stacks of cobble or charcoal or whatnot, while others of us are mining that much out and need a way to get rid of it. A single train of chest carts with a powered cart pushing could move 10 times what a person with an enderchest can, considering vanilla enderchest mechanics.

I wonder if we could possibly pay train operators with resources.

Eight times longer precisely. I once journeyed for several hours in the overworld and punched into the nether on a whim. I found myself in the tunnels made at spawn, resulting in hours of wasted time.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Yeah, it would take a long time to make the railway.
I think it would be fun to make a subway system, just as a creative project.

The old server had a full-fledged Nether subway going on- cart dispenseries, and powered rail loading/unloading stations- the whole deal. But the new Nether is less enclosed, and so making the tunnels and bridges over lava is much more difficult- before it was just a matter of tunneling around.

Edit: ack, wrong thread.
Oh, but on topic. Anyone want to through out a rough estimate of just how many rail systems we've got going on the server right now? Nobody ever uses them. If you want to travel use the nether. You can move a few thousand blocks in the matter of minutes there, which would take much longer even on rails in the overoworld. If you really want, go make a nether rail system, but mind that though more lax, user's right to ownership still carries over to their tunnels. By that I mean you can peg your own tunnels onto an existing one, but don't edit anything else (and try and have the extension blend in). =P

actually a NEW nether rail system would be really nice as the current network of nether rails and paths are horribly inefficient as as many player tunnes are branched off of one another.
an example of this is trying to get to Wyrmalla's place from mine, to get there i have to go up to the spawn and then i get taken over towards Mondo's area and then i have to head way south. I make a giant U shaped trip when i could go straight across and be done with it.
If a rail system was started from the spawn portal's location and went out North, South, East and West those could be the "main line". Players could then connect up to whichever direction is closest to them. In areas with a few portals in close proximity a branch line could be made that goes from the main line to the cluster of portals and the players could connect to that rather than each have their own branch.
Heavily used areas could have double rails.

Or, instead of making the U shaped trip, you could carve a path through the Nether and bust through
Just make sure you keep it relatively neat and tidy.
