I have made many, some for myself, some for others, some for public use. The best one is in the End, where you can farm endermen duh, you can get to level 30 in a minute and a half. If you want generic mobs, I have one in the ocean by my castle and you can get stacks and stacks of items very easily.
The nether system is so convoluted due to how people first set up their portals. The most typical method of doing this is to create one in the overworld and have that link to the nearest one in the nether. As this will be someone else's they choose to dig from their to the rough area that corresponds to the overworld location. Sure you could instead make a more direct route after you've placed the portal, but most just call it quits after making their initial tunnel (mind that if you're just making a portal you probably lack the resources for that kind of work). However that's not to say that more direct tunnels are an unknown thing, Sky_Slasher(78? ...Uh I forget)'s dug a little rail system that leads directly from 0,0 to his home, rather than the long series of tunnels which he initially used.
Oh, and there is a few particularly long tunnels which can contain rails. However as these go out way past the civilized areas people rarely peg onto them. ...Such tunnels are a little eerie, as they tend to forced to you to be travelling for a while through a rather samey looking environment without seeing any signs of other player's work until you reach their end typically.
This infomercial brought to you by Soylent Green. Because in the future people'll do anything to get what they want, and they want Soylent Green.

Next map whenever that is, I think when it comes to the nether, we should have a few people to plan the network like the last map. I'd be happy to do it.
We tried to plan this one. That's why it's so loopy, instead of being branchy. The old one was only really possible because there were only maybe 10 projects/settlements going on- people actually cooperated on things so there was enough travel between them that someone decided to create a rail system. And the system was even then full of unneeded turns and loops and bends.

I remember the old one, and the further out you got, the less and less navigable it was. People still cooperate, its just less people make an effort now seeing as people have tekkit and FtB and all of that.
If someone could come offer advice, that would be great. I'd like to be able to have a system that doesn't require things to be turned on and off and can just go. Creepers are also the only mobs I care about.

It's the other way around at the moment with the apparent FTB reset coming up. Yesterday when I was on we had like 10 people.

Experience is something you get just after you need it The Narkos Dynasty - 15k Iron Hands - 12k The Shadewatch - 3k Cadmus Outriders - 4k Alpha Legion Raiders - 3k
Oh that was me, and thanks for drawing attention to that fact. I put ever so much work into it, though personally I think that its utterly terrible, and should be torn down immediately by anyone who is willing.
or reference the Redstone beneath it, which you said yourself you cant do

So I'm trying to develop a Redstone Counter to use with my planned Freight Station- I'm thinking there might be a way to separate a pushing Furnace Cart from the rest of the train to put it into a holding pattern and refeuling loop while the rest of the train gets unloaded via hopper- it would only work for a specific number of incoming carts (unless I could figure out a way to count the carts coming in and set the counter to one less...) but I think it would be awesome.
I really want to have an amazing freight yard in the Mesa.

I accept 6 emeralds per name tag or one ghast tear per nametag.
(Because villagers trade 6 emeralds for a saddle which is also dungeon loot, and ghast tears are rare and not easily farmed).
Contrary to rumours, I'm not selling horse armour (..yet), if you want it, go adventuring.

Dark, would you be up for adding a list of public-use mob farms (and any other available-to-the-public resources) to the FAQ? Ideally this would also include nearest nether portal, and map references...
