I just want to make people aware that I won't update the server immediately to 1.8 as soon as it's out on Tuesday. Although their use of snapshots and pre-releases has done a lot to help find major bugs before release, there's often still something that doesn't show up until much vaster numbers of people are playing it.

Mojang are releasing it on a Tuesday for this same reason, so they have most of the rest of the week to fix any issues that pop up. Whether there are any problems or not, the new update should hopefully be nice and stable by Friday evening (whether it is 1.8 or 1.8.2 or 1.8.11 by then)

So I will aim to update the server either Friday evening or early Saturday morning next week.
Sounds good to me! I'll get to work on the new stuff when that happens.

Yeah I will be at school, so I won't be able to spend as much time as I want on computer games. :(

Is there an issue with the head item textures displaying? I have an Enderman one and another that's my own head, and both are showing up as Steve?s.

I think there was a bug a while back when they changed the way skins are handled and I'll have to give you the heads again.

The public Mesa base is now pretty much finished. I'll probably continue to potter about making cosmetic changes here and there but I think the main structure is pretty much done.

You can get to the base by following the North trunk of the Nether Hub all the way to the end and turning left where signposted.

Happy mining!

So my game updated to 1.8 today and ... it doesn't get past the loading screen. Any suggestions (written in simple enough terms that a middle-aged imbecile could follow) to get past it? I've taken a quick look at the official forum but that's not been very helpful.

Everyone and his dog is trying to update Minecraft right now, it might just be taking forever to download the updates.

If that's not the case and you're still stuck:

Start with the simplest non-destructive option, create a new launcher profile (in case your current one has corrupted somehow or not installed the update correctly).
  • Start the launcher

  • In the bottom left, click "New Profile"

  • Give it a suitable name, say UpdateTest

  • Tick the Game Directory box and enter a alternate path to install this test profile to (e.g. change the .minecraft ending to .minecraftTest)

  • Click Save Profile

  • Select the Profile in the dropdown in the bottom left

  • Click Play

  • See if it works and report back.

Special word of warning to those of you updating to 1.8. If you update your single player worlds to 1.8, and then switch back to 1.7 to play on the server (or for other reasons) DO NOT open your updated single player worlds in 1.7. There has been a change to how items are stored and if you open 1.8 worlds in Minecraft 1.7, all chest contents are deleted (and other bad stuff). Best course of action is to make a backup copy of all your single player worlds before updating to 1.8. Backups are always a good idea in general anyway.

Ah well, if you're updating the server on Friday I'll probably just leaving off playing again till then I suppose. Youknow just to avoid spending ten seconds clicking back to the previous version in the launcher. =P

...Uh that and so I can actually do some real work again instead of playing Minecraft like I have been (though saying that I stopped playing Minecraft for a bit there and achieved little)

Instructions followed and it works just fine. Based on this it turns out that the problem lies with a resource pack (Sphax) that was supposedly updated to be compatible with 1.8. I'll go back to the Sphax website and see if there's any documentation on it but failing that I may need to go hunting for a new texture pack.

Thanks for the warning! I'll stay in 1.7 (barring tests) until DakkaDakka updates, just to be on the safe side.

    ETA:
I traced the problem, not to the resource pack but to Java which wouldn't let me assign more than 1Gb RAM to Minecraft! Uninstalled, reinstalled, edited the memory allocation, and now have texture packs and 1.8 working in perfect harmony.

Messing about designing my new house. At the moment I'm currently putting together a floating island over my existing (unfinished) home. Once the basic layout of that's done I'm going to plunk down a ruined fort on it, with levels descending beneath the surface. It being a floating island however, not all of the fort's lower levels are going to be particularly intact, with hallways being exposed to the outside, jutting out the sides of the island. Here's what I've come up with as far as planning the dungeon part of the fort.

Uh, yeah, the upper levels of the fort will be a bit more lived in, with the descending levels looking more and more abandoned. The torches being necessary for mobs unfortunately. However the cells themselves have a single block that's at light level 7, so as long as the doors are kept shut I may just have some prisoners.

    Your average cell:

...And well, one which hasn't seen much housekeeping. *Eugh, its going to be a right bugger silk touching all those ferns.

Then back up the stairs to the dungeon's entrance. Not quite as much of a state, but still not a shining marble castle.

I could probably do with piling up slabs to represent debris in places, though I didn't want to make it a bother moving about. Given how I'll be building this I'm probably going to have to plan out every section first before I put it together on the server otherwise it could be too low (at the moment the island's ground level's about 150 blocks above actual ground level) or some ill conceived business will occur,

Edit: Actually youknow what would be awesome too? Dirt/ Grass slabs. No really. As someone who doesn't like mobs spawning within ten miles of their house I do hate having all those torches turning my lawn into a pin cushion. I aught to just make the regular standing torch texture transparent as I only use those for lighting up large areas anyway. It'd be nice though to be able to have darkness without mobs spawning, which is why I say dirt slabs. That or one of those FtB torch things which don't allow mobs to spawn for dozens of blocks. ...Just anything to keep my garden tidy. =(

That is a seriously good looking interior, I'm really looking forward to being able to make mossy brick and cobble once 1.8 hits the server. I particularly like your use of ferns, really adds to the feel of the place.

Unless I've missed something, why don't you just use regular shears on them?

I hear you! The only way I've managed it is by using carpet tiles and leaf blocks over jack'o'lanterns ... hardly an ideal solution but it's not too awful.

Heh, yeah I realised that shears would do after posting that. Still I'm not sure if the tall ferns are just bonemealed regular ones or some variation. Meh, I'll work it out.

I'm having a go at the exterior at the moment. Its looking like a straight copy of this at the front, but that image only shows the entrance, so with the rest I've been just throwing it together. I'm not entirely sure about the style, its a bit too like a temple, but it'll work out. That'll do for the main building, with there being ruins surrounding it on the rest of the island (as well I need at least one room which doesn't have a massive hole in the roof or exposed rafters. Doesn't bode well for sleeping when there's a leak).

The world height's 256 right? Just so I can build this thing right up at the maximum elevation so there's more room for the underground sections (oh and the view'll probably be nice too).

Yep, pretty certain that you get double-height ferns by bonemealing the regular ones.

Exterior is looking very nice, I see what you mean about looking like a temple ... my only suggestion would be to decide what you do want it to look like style-wise and then do a Google image search, see if anything inspires.

Maybe try wood for the roof instead? With a wood roof, I think it would get a lot more of an 'abandoned Manor house' feel rather than the temple one.

Hmn, what am I going for? Um... yeah, that'd be nice to know. Just a stone fort of some description. Not a European castle is about the extent of what I know I want. The problem with having the main building ruined is that rain will come through, and that mobs could spawn. Rather I'd like to have one section which is somewhat intact (even if there's upper floors which have holes) which is then attached to ruins. I had a go at expanding the temple design a bit, but it doesn't look quite right, so I'll some up with something else eventually. ...I have the lowest level worked out, but ah, not the sections above it. Smart guy.

Rain is a bad thing? I thought it would add to the atmosphere to have the rain making it's way in. You could have a hole in the roof with a cauldron beneath to catch the water, making it look more dodgy but looking like someone is trying to live there. Or that room with the skeleton head might have water source blocks above the roof, maybe a pool or flooded room so droplets of water seep through at places, explaining the overgrown plants and giving it a more dank feel. But that probably has nothing to do with what you're going for.

So, a slight snag on seamlessly upgrading the server world to 1.8.

The rule for underwater monuments generating in existing chunks is that the existing chunk must have only been visited/loaded for less than 2 minutes. From my sample testing, most underwater monument locations don't seem to meet this requirement and so monuments are not being generated in existing chunks.

    However, there is a workaround.

I'm going to take the server offline and fly around all the existing ocean chunks on the server, so that it stores in the data files where all the monuments are supposed to be. Then I will open the world in MCEdit and mark those locations for "repopulation". This causes the monuments to be generated when the world is opened in Minecraft again.

This work may take some time to finish, so the current world will be offline while I do this.

However, I thought, I could leave a temporary server running for people to play on while I'm working on the current one.

Let's see, what do we have here? Something for Minecraft 1.8.... How about the Beta Minecraft 1.8 Dakka world from 2011:
    Spoiler:

Yep, it's back. Although the upgrade has had some effect on it. All chests are missing, paintings popped off and doors are doing that thing again. It's still fun to explore and reminisce (for those of you who played this world) and read the weird and wonderful signs that are around the place.

Most nether portals got disabled in the upgrade too (although I've fixed the spawn one), you can relight them, but they may not link up with their intended locations without some leg work.

There won't be the 2 hourly restarts on this world because it's temporary. I'm not going to be saving any changes long term and if it crashes hard, I'll just revert it back to its original state.

Once I have finished working on the current world I'll take the 2011 world offline and put the current one back online.

    O.o

    Interesting.

    I've only visited it once.

    And good luck on that!

Are you going to do it on areas that are closer to spawn and peeps? (The monuments)

Will these areas possibly have new stone types as well?

I'm doing it on as much existing ocean as I can without taking too much time. This world has a lot of ocean, but I hope to have it finished at some point today.

Repopulating the areas won't give the new stone types (other than the monument stone of course) I think. I'll double check when I get to that stage and let you know.

So far I'm about 1/3rd of the way through the first stage (gathering monument locations).

Also, as recommended by Binidj, the 2011 world is now in peaceful mode so that creepers etc don't annoy anyone while exploring on a nostalgia trip

    Automatically Appended Next Post:
Took a brief break, but I have finished the first stage (getting Minecraft to store all the monument locations). I'm now onto the stage where I go through the world in MCEdit and mark those locations for re-population.

There's 53 to do. Some did manage to generate a monument, but I'll need to check them all anyway.
