Could be for decoration. Diamond blocks are swanky.
Some people also prefer mining to trading.
Personally, I think you should get a circle generator going and make your giant hole in the ground a circular pit instead of square. I mean, I have nothing against square (obviously) but square pits are pretty common, while making it circular will make it easier for you to use it as the basis of a future project- maybe have some sort of spire in the center eventually, and have a balcony/ledge based town built up around the edges.

I've also set up a project board, feel free to tackle any of the items listed on there, or make your own! I can donate resources within reason.
Please don't build in the area I've recently expanded though. I've got plans for most of that space.
If we could get 4-16 farmer type traders that have never been traded with, we can replace the farmers in the iron farm and plant carrots & potatoes and they'll drop enough for everyone, and that way we don't need separate farms for them.
If you need oak or birch for a project let me know and I'll run them through my tree farm
imo, the charcoal machine should probably be between the tree farm & foundry, if were going to start making lots of it, might as well put it where it's used. Did you just want a furnace setup like the one I built? or did you want to go big, really big, and do the wither fully automatic tree & charcoal farm?
were you thinking glow stone for the lights around spawn? or redstone lights? I can donate a stack of either.

I'm good on oak and birch. More exotic wood like jungle, dark oak, and acacia are welcome though. I've been trying to vary my buildings more. Too much stone brick and oak wood makes Steve a dull builder.
Charcoal machine doesn't have to be anything spectacular, just enough that if someone needs something cooked at spawn they don't have to dig warrens to get coal.
As for lighting, I'm still not really sure. At least for the area I'm working on, I think I want to get all the buildings/plots and roads set up before I decide. At the moment I'm torn between a one or two high block coming from the ground or a more traditional 'street lamp' style.
Desubot wrote: Why not a lava furnace instead? just link into the nether or underground for unlimited supplies
Oh also if you need sea lanterns for lighting they are always available.
That's a thought I had too. Charcoal has the advantage of being renewable and cheap, and the generator design I've used in the past can just be loaded and forgotten about. However, if someone wants to gather a bunch of buckets (we have an iron farm!) and just fill some chests with lava, I certainly wouldn't complain. Just not sure how many people do mass-smelting at spawn.
I have quite a few stacks of sea lanterns, and maybe it's just me, but I feel like they only go well with certain building materials. Redstone lamps look better with a much larger variety of materials.
They last forever and its easy to repair if you have a exp grinder.
Is that still true with the new repair rules? I haven't tried with iron equipment but with diamond items I only get about 4 repairs before it reaches a limit.
Also it's worth bearing in mind that we have (at least) one Blaze Grinder and therefore a surfeit of blaze rods which can be used in forges ... in stacks!

you should get 5, every time you do something in an anvil it doubles the cost.
from what I understand that if you add a book it doubles, if you add a name tag it doubles, if you repair it it doubles.
What I do is once I have a pick with all the enchantments I like, I fix it til it's to expensive, then make a new pick and combine the new pick with the old to keep the enchantments. It does start off a bit more expensive to repair, but it saves me the enchanting time and fiddling with books time.

Wow, that's a really efficient machine. Thanks for the link!
Will make it much easier to make charcoal.
The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

My blog
I will take all the stone you can possibly give me.
Literally. I managed to use up almost every stack of cobble that Sleitsmithr mined out of his Chasmholm underground, as well as everything that I've mined up from inside the Mesa.
It's the Mesa. It shall be a towering bastion of rock with sprawling deep caverns below, crowned by a spire of ice and glass.
Seriously. You should see the basement.
Those walls aren't solid, btw. They're pillars. However, the pillars do go down with solid stone to the native rocks. No building on dirt for me.
The innermost keep was initially a mountain waaay back on the first server I joined, two server resets ago, that Dark's been nicely pulling across for me as I continue to work on it.
And it's really only one of about 5 or so projects of similar scale on this server. Sleitsmithr's Chasmholm is absolutely massive in scope, spanning a system of 5 underground Ravines to the North of me. Ma55terfett's place is similarly massive to the South of me, and mostly made of Netherbrick.
Grundz has his Titan (which my Mesa could potentially stand against!) and there's other similarly huge builds going on elsewhere that I don't even know about, I'm sure.

If you stand on the side you're looking at and face away from it, you'll see a bunch of roses and a Iron block which leads to stairs. Go down and help yourself

Why won't this help me with my Efficiency 5, Unbreaking 3 Diamond Pickaxe? It's too expensive no matter what I do. Just placing it on the Anvil with nothing else already gives me a 'Too Expensive!' reply. Man, I really liked that pickaxe. Got me about 6 or 8 large chests of cobble with it.

It should, in the anvil, put a unenchanted diamond pick on the left, and your old one on the right and it should transfer the enchantments and allow a few repairs.
I'd like to invite you all to my place for a house warming party. I'm finally done with my base minus the interior decorating. Come by on sunday the 13th at noon EST for fun & games. Come and explore my tower and flagship.
I'm down the west tunnel with a track to my portal.
Watch me set the roof on fire (literally), and unveil what's probably the biggest portal on the server. It might even set the floor on fire
Try your hand at lockpicking, figure out the combo out of the 512 combinations to the main door and win 10 diamonds. I'm not even sure what it is Until it is open, if you climb up the vines, go to the gate and look for the opening in the glass to get in.
The first 2 rabbits delivered to my zoo and placed in the empty pen, wins 10 diamonds each.
From the top down my tower has it all,
gold farm,
xp farm,
mob farm, enter at your own risk, but if you fall at least the hoppers will catch your stuff
On the main floor, for your viewing pleasure, watch the splat show. I'll leave the mob farm off on sunday but we can still see mobs fall, your FPS will thank me.
Then down from the entrance, we have my ostentatious sorting room, It takes a week to fill up 18 double chests full of zombie meat, bones, string, arrows, and gun powder. The witch drops have been gathering for over a month and I barely have a double chest full.
For sunday only, help yourself to all the meat, bones, arrows, string and powder you can carry. Off from the sorting room, follow the tunnels to the zoo, sugar bowl, and tree farm.
The tree farm is open to the public at all times, I have plenty of oak saplings, birch saplings and bone meal. Just watch the switch settings if you plant oak while it's set to birch you can break it. Please pick up and replace all the saplings and replace the bone meal in the chests behind the machine when done.
Under the sorting level, relax by the the fish tank, watch for villagers to float lazily by.
The lowest floor houses my villager trading hall. DO NOT PUSH ANY BUTTONS. Also please don't trade with the farmers in the mine carts. Do trade with anyone else. Read the signs, I have librarians with every enchantment at it's highest level. Yes they trade level 5 books Bring your own emeralds & books, some can take a stack of emeralds for a book.
If you fall or jump in the hole in the storage room you'll find my mineshafts, you'll need to take the minecart elevator to get back up. Just look up and keep right clicking til your back in the storage room.
And no sneaky getting started on the lock before sunday!

Anvildude wrote: Yeah- can't repair, but transferrence works a little better. But you have to use another tool instead of just the material.
Still doesn't work.
You can see for yourself the next time you pass through spawn. It's in an item frame on the COBBLOTRON here: https://www.darkinnit.com/newdakkamap/#/-164/64/-195/max/0/0 and there's a freshly made diamond pickaxe in the back room on the other end.
Also, man, the beacon got taken down, I was using it to power the COBBLOTRON's mining speed. It was just on the edges of the beacons area of effect and I doubt the beacon will be placed as close if it ever gets rebuilt at spawn.

I've never seen that before. I guess just use it til it's gone and start working on a new one.
