Ok I will try this again.

I am currently playing Armored Core V. Watching Pacific Rim got me itching for some mecha action.

I am now on Xbox live as well. In all the years I have had my 360 I have never signed up for Live, until today.

I've been experiencing rookie death after rookie death recently :-\ I have a squad of 5 people that have been with me since the beginning that while they do get injured, they've never died... Mutons show up, and now I'm losing rookies left and right .

That game is like an abusive spouse. Everything seemed good, but then you leave the roast in just a little bit too long (or your idiot squad members don't know how to quietly open a door ) and bam! get a back hand to the face!

What is hilarious is one of my assault members with a shotgun has never been injured, never been out of a mission, and has the most kills . She just run n guns into a flanking position and blows things up.

Ah, but remember with the plot of that game. Everything that you're doing has already happened. The world still ends up the way it does in the original games. Its the journey that matters. Oh and punching straight through walls to stab people in the back. Yeah that's a major part of the game too. =P

Never played any of the other games, so that doesn't bother me.

What annoys me immensely, though, is that lethal takedowns (and being lethal in general) is far louder and awards less experience than non-lethal.

I realized on my 3rd crashed UFO that I was playing too aggressively when my Heavy Weapons guy was dropped to 1 hit point due to aggressive placement and trying to get towards the aliens., and I had to basically not use him for the rest of the mission. After that point, I started stocking up on med kits and taking it slower. My shotgunner just doesn't seem to care (the humorous thing is she apparently dodges like a melon fether, the teflon alien killer.

Playing aggressively is playing too aggressively.

I never liked my Heavy, he rarely accomplished anything. I even went so far to take 3 jetpack'd Snipers in a mission and they just destroy any opposition

Destroy cover, blow up walls.

Give him Bullet Storm and you can position him somewhere, fire two shots a turn or
give him a shot followed by an immediate reload. Very very nice.

My heavies always have scopes and I found it made a HUGE difference.
I think I fired about three rockets total in my last play-through, and the heavies were great.
Snipers were always better though.
Surprisingly an assault won me the game with a last minute cloaked run-and-gun to take out the boss.
We would have all died so horribly.

I have 2 heavies on my team. Those 2 extra large, extra damaging missiles are pretty darn useful. Last Terror mission 2, 2 of them cyberdisks showed up at the same time together with drones and bunched up together.

They didn't like the 2x 16 damage rockets that much

The Holo-targetting I have on both of them also helps my entire team a lot.

Assaults are my favorite class by far, but nothing quite equals the frustration of them missing two double-tapped 95% shots to the face after a run-and-gun.

They're also not too shabby if you swap out the shotty for the AR or, later, a laser rifle.

Something about XCOM that gets me mad is how it gets confused when you save too much They can make an amazing game, but it looks like they can't create a sorting algorithm if their life depended on it.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on that afterward.

I love both games, but I think I liked ME1 better as far as mechanics go. ME2 probably had the better story though.

So far as the OP goes, I picked up 2 games. First, I got Wargame ALB on a whim after seeing a trailer of it's sweet-ass graphics. That was useful for reminding me I have a policy about buying games on a whim, I hate Wargame ALB turns out. It has too many levels of complexity. Much like how I like Ace Combat over actual flight sims, I prefer Supreme Commander and other more simplistic RTS's over Wargame. It's very, very non-intuitive to play and the tutorials are pretty poor.

I also got a copy of Don't Starve. That's a really great game, I highly recommend it, specially if you'll play it without googling stuff and just explore and experiment.

The tutorials also aren't helpful to actual gameplay, because they largely have you running around in an M1A1 shooting at Soviet tanks from the '50s. The community has created far better tutorials, located here.

But if complexity's the issue, then yeah, that doesn't change. It's a complex game, though it seems much less so once you get familiar with it.

Anyone in here with reliable FTL experience? The game's so frustrating and seems to be incredibly luck-based...made it to the last galaxy once, thinking I finished it, only to find out I suddenly have to face enemies with 3-4 shields and ~4 weapons...

Its not just you, It is that hard. How well you do at the end does have a bit to do with luck. I've had runs where my entire way I picked up amazing weapons and owned the rebels at the end. However, Its very "possible" ("more than likely" feels like a better term) to go through and only get absolutely terrible weapons from ships and stores the whole way. Losing crew can be a pretty big hit along the way too. I found losing you full level pilot or engine man is really bad. Main tips I can give is always upgrade shields to 3 and put as much into engines as you can spare. The extra evasion is a godsend

Except it's not. The distance from the cockipt to the rear of the ship is the same on the inside as the old one - despite having been told that it's twice (?) the length of the old Normandy.

OK, so it's got an extra deck. Which contains .... your cabin. Me, I'd start sleeping in the coms area, more walls between me and space.

That's exactly why you don't take too many snipers. The game becomes a boring snoozefest.

Poor balance does this

FTL is insanely frustrating. I enabled death-proof saving and it's getting better. Balance is really off on this one :/

If you're finding if difficult you can always turn off the enemy fleet. That'd allow to farm an entire system before moving on, though it does take out some of the challenge when fighting the boss I suppose. If you're seeking the rarer encounters though (ie crystal race), I suppose it would be a good idea.

I'm fine with the save edit right now as it prevents the worst bad luck cases. Taking away the fleet would be way too easy as you could gather everything in the entire sector.
