Hey I had a go at playing it without the fleet, yet still managed to lose the final battle.

Though yes, the fleet really does make the game. The basis is that you've only got a limited time in each system, its luck whether you get what you want or not (and woe betide you run out of fuel). Increasing the chance of finding decent gear kind of takes away that feeling of escaping by the skin of your teeth.

Anyhow. Playing Age of Empires III

Its surprised me in its quality. I had been told that it was utter gak going in, but its hardly that. It does strongly remind me of Dawn of War, and has stark differences with its predecessors. The camera bugs me in its lack of zoom controls (it totes the quality of its models, yet I can't zoom all the way in), as are anything but the base controls a bother to handle (shift scrolls to move the camera...). I've almost gotten through the base game's campaign, and though the story's lacking perhaps, it is engaging enough to play. They could have done a lot more with the idea of returning to locations from the earlier parts of the campaign though (the fountain of youth levels are the best in the game so far for me).

Give them a jetpack, scopes and watch them win every mission just by constantly moving + Overwatch.

That's exactly why you don't take too many snipers. The game becomes a boring snoozefest.

Poor balance does this

FTL is insanely frustrating. I enabled death-proof saving and it's getting better. Balance is really off on this one :/

Do you have the setting enabled that shows you the jump routes as you mouse over them? It was very frustrating my first two play throughs going down a long path only for it to be a dead end for no real reason. Having it enabled lets you map out a pretty good route from the beginning letting you get in as much scrape as possible before jumping out.

So...I finally managed to destroy the rebel flagship, got a new ship, played a few new rounds and...well...why is there such a big hype around FTL?

The game is extremely poorly balanced, leaving your succes mostly to luck and not skill, making it extremely hard. You know the basics after a few rounds already - always keep the important systems manned, lure boarders into your medroom, upgrade shields and FTL asap, don't use autofire but rather manually synchronize shots etc. etc. At that point, you mastered the game and the rest is luck. And seriously, that's extremely poor design.

I love hard games. Dark Souls is my favorite game of all times and I am about 75% through with my naked playthrough. But while being very hard, DS greatly relies on your skill. It takes a long time to get really good, but pays off extremely well too as your success (or failure) is solely based on your skill.

FTL, however, is extremely hard too but just because it's unfair and poorly balanced. I just don't get why there's so much hype about it. Just because it's indie and hard? Nowadays, I get the feeling that any indie game that's also hard seems to get a lot of praise for being "hardcore" - which is definitely wrong.

So all in all, I think FTL is overhyped a lot and, personally, I think it's not a good game. Far from it.

I liked FTL a lot.
It's a partly text-based rogue-like game with a lot of inherent randomness, some multi-tasking/micro-managing and it's not necessarily about finishing the game. "enabl[ing] death-proof saving" is most likely not the way to enjoy the game though.

Do you have a PS3 to play Demon Souls or Xbox360 to play Ninja Gaiden 2? I find both harder than Dark Souls.

P.S: always nice to meet a battle-brother who doesn't mind getting sodomized by a game until you are able to sodomize it back

Nope, the only console we have is my fiancee's Xbox 360 and we think about buying a WiiU.

Yeah, I like games that really challenge its user as well - as long as they are fair

It's a step to counter bad game design. FTL is poorly balanced and is mostly based on luck - which just doesn't make for a good game. I can recommend Dungeons of Dredmore. Excellent rogue-like with far superior game design.

Depends. This happened on odd playthroughs, but most of the time, if you really took your time exploring the areas and don't fall for the shiny traps (STAY AWAY from dem teleportaz!), it worked out really well. Learning to dance is mandatory, obviously.

/e: just to clarify, "dance" = clever movement.

So... you took the rogue-like elements out of a game that's entirely made to be... a rogue-like game.

I took out one of them. To me, key features also include randomization and turn- or rather step-based movement. Rogue-likes are very hard to balance due to the randomization part, that's fosho, but FTL does a terrible job at it as the entire game becomes luck-based after 1-2 hours. I enabled saving to see if the game has more to offer and...it doesn't. You unlock a few new ships that are superior to the older ones and thus the game gets...easier after you first "beat" it. Again: huh? The overall game should have been longer, aka more galaxies, but you'd unlock more ships while passing-by. It's impossible to win the game with your first ship but more ships allow you to get further and further. etc.

Now, after finishing the game once and playing a few rounds with the new ship (+unlocked layouts) I don't see any reason to further play it. It's incredibly repetitive and instead of playing the game to see if I win, I could just roll a dice - and that's really poor game design. I'd rather play some DoD.

They're free, which is always nice.

Honestly, I can't really bring myself to actually PAY for games that aren't Elder Scrolls anymore, considering that some of the best FPS, TBS, Tower defense, hack&slash and RPG games are free.

Currently playing Firefall's beta- that game needs tooltips like a leper needs antibiotics, but once you figure out how stuff works, it's pretty fun.

Have you played The Walking Dead yet? (The Telltale RPG!)

It's a mixture of tv series and game, essentially an adventure that tells an AWESOME story with deep, dynamic and overall well-written characters. I cried at the end of the series because I was so deep emotionally involved into it.

In general: what games are you interested in? Genre etc. What are your favorite games?

Yeah, sorry guys, should have been a bit more specific.
I like RPGs/FRPGs (Eldar Scrolls Series, Baldurs, Fallout 1-3, Deus Ex series etc).
I was thinking of getting the Witcher series but ts quite expensive on Steam. Any good?

I also like strategies - Civ5, DoW2 etc.

The Witcher, if you consider the RPG and story side, is amazing and one fantastic tale. The combat... may not be for you. I didn't mind and actually enjoyed it, but I read how people disliked the "click-based" combat. (The "The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director's Cut" is only 7,99€ on steam so I don't think you risk much trying this one out )

Witcher 2 ... I kinda wish I could tell you more, but I gave up on it in the middle of my run. I blame myself for choosing the toughest difficulty setting right away. Unlike other games where great difficulty = greater challenge, this one just means greater frustration .
