Ah I see well yes, those things really do help earliy in the game, alongside gene enhancement it really can make your troops reall powerhouses, but Mutons are decent enemies early on. Although they are preferebal to some of the later alien vermin that comes along. What sort of squad do you run?

Mostly a heavy and support squad that usually rushes into buildings (makes floaters less of a pain). I'm really more worried about Cryssalids and Ethereals. (even though I haven't met Ethereals yet)

Well, if you have Enemy Within, a MEC with a flamer tends to make short work of lids. Instantly hits them and ignores cover. Since they like to gang up and try to surround your units you can fry all of them and finish them off with conventional weapons or an explosive. Research the jellied elerium upgrade, and you get a 9 damage Flamer, meaning those 'lids are, quite literally, toast.

If you don't have EW, then SHIVs are your friend here. They are cheaper and faster than your infantry, and tend to deal relatively more damage. Rockets and shotguns are also a nice counter.

Ethereals are a bit trickier. I found SHIVs tend be useful here, since they can't be MC'd. Lacking a SHIV, I usually soften up the Ethereal with explosives (the more damage it takes, the less effective it's reflect ability becomes), before moving in with a rapid fire assault or a sniper.
Alternatively, you could try giving a soldier feedback (again, EW only). Hilarious ability.

Agreed on all acounts, Mecs will just about murder anything when you get them upgraded, and add that flamethrower upgrade on top. And yes, feedback is an ability that saved me several times, no more mindcontrol for you silly sectoid commander/ ethernals

Wait, I thought SHIVs were EW only. When do those get researched?

Nah, SHIVs are in EU.

To get them, you have to :

- Research Experimental Warfare at the labs

- Build a Foundry

-Research SHIV at the foundry

- You then unlock a basic SHIV unit, that can be constructed at the foundry. Comes with something like 10 health and a 7 damage machine gun.
Doesn't sound too impressive at first, but they can be upgraded with better weapons (which don't increase the price of the SHIV), and better armor (which does increase it's price, but you have the earlier versions available as well, with any weapon upgrades you researched)

Recently switched things up... As ive been settling into my new house, I've started alternating between Gran Turismo 6 on PS3, and Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls on my PC.

So far, I'm actually enjoying the changes/fixes to D3 since launch... however the game just seems to have gotten a bunch easier

Warframe's the most fun when you can group with a bunch of buddies and just start playing through. It's the sort of game that makes for a good "Weekly play session" sort of thing, skyping with college friends that live too far away to hang out regularly. Alone, though, it's a little too repetitive and grindy.

How's Kingdoms of Amalur, Excommunicate? I bought it a while ago on sale, but haven't downloaded it yet.

@cthululuspy and skavenlord: I'm not really into SHIVs in enemy unknown anyway. They can't be promoted, can't carry items and can't use cover. I never really used em though.

------

Lately I've been playing 'shadowrun returns' after buying a copy and its expansion during the current sale which is going on till Monday at noon or so my time. I also got a friend the game and its expansion. Would be nice if we could play it together but oh well. I feel like xcom handled the turn based combat better but I haven't played through enough of this and this game is also infinitely cheaper.

Well I like it, the combat is really fun, the item crafting is pretty solid and there are a lot of quests. The story may not be the most original or exciting and the environments while nice to look at aren't the most amazing ever seen. It has the reply value of trying it again with a different class or even a hybrid class, of course you can change your class during the game should you wish as long as you have the gold to pay a fateweaver.

But yeah deffinately well worth playing

Shivs are great in a supporting role, backing up your mechs or providig that last bit of fire support you need in a desperate fire figth with some evil alien overlord. And agreed on the Shadowrun part, played a fair bit of at a friends house. Not very impresed but its a decent game that is true to the original material

I loaded up Mass Effect, was going to play an adept but... didn't feel like shoving people around as much. Think I will either try the engineer with a grandfathered sniper rifle, or the infiltrator with either a shotgun or assault rifle added on. The medium armor and having a sniper rifle + shotgun/AR is fairly tempting, that and the stealth modes apparently available in ME2. Anyone have a good argument for the engineer instead? Does he just play medic all the time? Same with the sentinel?

Since SOE merged all of their games to one premium member account, anyone find any of their games entertaining? EQ2? Haven't felt like digging into PS2.

Batman: Arkham Origins and enjoying it immensely. 11 Hours and only I would say 30% completed. It feels odd. I guess its all the side stuff that I tend to forget that makes up 60% of the Batman games.

I don't think Sentinel or Engineer are really medic types (though I heard in ME1 the engineer gets a vehicle repair bonus). Then again, I never used these for the campaign. Shotgun and Assault Rifle are pretty good choices too (I think you get the Carnage power in ME1 if you take a class that can take a shotgun)

Personally, I went with Vanguard. You have to wait until ME2 to get better powers but the Vanguard powers in ME2 and 3 can be REALLY awesome (Biotic charge anyone?)

Vanguard makes the game far too easy, though, as you get virtually invulnerable later on as soon as Biotic Charge refills your shield.

I litterally just redownloaded mass effect 1 onto my PS3. Going to start it up later.

Falskaar Mod for Skyrim. It's very good all round, the quest design and scripting is arguably more polished and interesting than Bethesda's original game and the dungeons are all well designed from a gameplay standpoint.

However the voice acting (on balance) and writing stinks plus the art design is very bland. It's as if when he was making the levels the mod author decided that he was only going to use vanilla assets as they were intended, none of the creativity shown in the scripting and quest design is on display in the art. As a result the world feels very unrealistic and gamey, when i first brought up the map i guffawed at how unrealistic it looked, it looked like 'Battle_Island_02', or some-such, from a 00's RTS. Skyrim itself actually looks fairly believable, at least in a condensed model railway layout kinda way.

The voice acting for the main quest and writing for the main quest is just ghastly (the way the worst VO guy says 'Caverns' is a particular low-light) but alot of the incidental stuff is great, alot better than the base game. However having completed Helgen Reborn, that has superb dialogue and VO, plus currently using Inigo as a follower it really falls short.

Almost rolled Adept but I saw the light and picked engineer. With bonus assault rifle, almost the same kit as Garus. I figure we'll chill out and be edgy and stuff. Of course, as cool as some of the ME2 vanguard powers were... Adept may pay off, oh well.

Was the bonus assault rifle unlocked in a previous playthrough?

I just started on PS3 (Played 360 last time.) been a long time since I played. Wen't for infultrator last time around I think so went Vanguard this time.

You gonna help Garus calibrate?

Yeah, anything you used enough. I could have picked warp or throw or maybe even the biotic shield thing I forget the name. AR sounded fun though, especially for when the boomheadshot power was cooling down.

Its been too long, I'm missing the last question.

The Mako sections still suck.

In the second and third game garrus is always in the engine room and whenever you talk to him he is always busy calibrating something.

Well, at least fighting a thresher maw with the Mako (if you get used to the controls) is... kind of decent.

Oh please, we all know the best way to kill a Thresher Maw is on foot(you get more xp for it even if its just by taking the last few hp off it).

I need to get back into Mass Effect been so long.

Completed Batman: Arkham Origins with a 30% completion..... now even that is a low completion rate for a game.

Hmm, not sure what to play now.
