Grabbed Gray Goo, and started playing through the single player campaign.
There's one possible problem that I've noted. The human faction requires that all of its buildings be linked to the HQ by power conduits that run across the ground.
No exceptions.
That sounds fine, except that there's no way to build a new HQ. And thus, as far as I can tell, building an expansion resource base requires running fragile conduit lines out to the new location, and then defending those conduit lines against any and all attacks.
@Eumerin: I think that's the point actually. If i remember they say the human faction has one powerful base that is very defensive, the Beta are the basic rts faction that are decent at everything and the Goo are very mobile and everywhere. The Goo sounds interesting. I feel like Flubber's gone insane and tries to kill everybody and some of it is kind of funny to me. They seem like a combo of zerg and the Borg from what i can tell except more like an amoeba faction. It's confusing what else to consider them. I've only seen one amoeba faction and that was in 'Endless Space' and if i recall correctly they were peaceful and very emotionally aware of others.
So basically after beating 'shogun 2: fall of the samurai' i then took down all the shogun territories for the emperor, took down all the rebellions and finally took down all my remaining enemies in the imperial faction that annoyed me earlier on by either betraying me or siding with somebody else.
Everything you see in white is mine. Basically only my steadfast allies lived and 2 of the weak factions managed to live all game without betraying me so i let them stay alive. Satsuma is my bro for life but they went from being my big brother to being number 2 when i basically out-shined them and dwarfed them with everything i had. Possibly because they just stopped fighting eventually for the most part. Tosa made a small comeback as i was busy destroying everybody.
I was also getting something like 30k in fun bucks every turn so that became ridiculous to the point where i didn't even spend most of it.
I find it funny how helpful character use can be. This one enemy kept most of his artillery outside of his capital/province so instead of fighting them as reinforcements i took a ninja to sabotage them so they wouldn't show up in that battle. After that i just destroyed them pretty easily. The rest of the playing i did today had almost all auto-resolves. I think i'm getting better at the game and it is fun. I actually find the characters to be much more useful than the armies at times. You can't imagine the hilarity of me taking down my last two shogun enemies by sabotaging their powerful armies and then inciting revolts inside their provinces only for their capitals to get captured with them completely unable to do anything about it. Hell that's how i finished them off and since they were outside of the provinces when it happened their armies just disbanded and i never had to fight them which is unusual but also terribly funny. I felt like a jerk for doing it but i couldn't resist.
Anyway if i remember i still have over 2 years left of the game (it's late november and the game ends at the end of 1876 i think) if i keep wishing to play and decide to turn on my previous allies but that kind of a d**k move. I don't think i'm that mean so i think that's it then.
It's kind of funny considering the big stalemate i had for 2-4 years in the game that i started doing well and then finally basically just trampled everybody very easily. Artillery is very much OP as are the advanced armor piercing naval weapons. I made the british warship anyway which if i remember has 42 cannons on it and is built like a pretty respectable battleship.

I just started really playing skyrim. I got it about a year and a half ago, and just powered through the main questline, but got distracted so I haven't experienced the majority of the game. I also have a bunch of utility mods, nothing too drastic.
That is split up with playing Van Helsing II, and metro 2033: last light redux.

Skyrim should be re-named 'ADD: The Never-ending Quest'. Usually i try to go to a quest area but then i get distracted by picking flowers (not joking) then i stumble upon a cave that leads me to a side quest and then 2 hours later after fighting falmer in some ruins and selling off all the crap i horded i keep going on. Also i have a habit of encountering random dragons when i don't need to. At first it's scary to face em, then it gets kind of annoying and finally it becomes tedious and annoying. I need them dragon bones to make dragon bone arrows though.
Also with the children add-on i feel like the worst and most neglectful parent ever. My housecarl is probably the kid's step-parent while i'm basically off on a quest picking flowers and having adventures. I mean at least they have a home rather than being homeless but i never pay attention to them practically and sometimes i make up for it by giving them a bajillion gold which i have a lot of because it's hard not to be rich later on in skyrim. So basically my kid's on the path to becoming a rich kid's spoiled brat that is bitter their parental figure never did anything with them. I hope i'm not this terrible as a real dad when and if it happens lol. Oddly enough i'm relatively cool with her keeping a fox as a pet even though it's a wild animal and not domesticated like a dog is. I probably figured she needed somebody.

It's a problem, imo. Building expansion bases without getting noticed is pretty much a requirement these days in RTS games. But that's impossible with the human faction because you've got the conduit lines running all over the place. And a quick bombing run or artillery strike is all it takes to shut down your remote base. There are tech advances that allow you to keep the defenses up and runninng, but those options require you to not take other tech options. And harvesting resources - i.e. the reason why you built the expansion base in the first place - is shut down with the loss of the conduit line.
The betas expand by deploying "hubs", which are centralized structures that the various building types are attached to. No worker unit is required (or even available). You simply select an area that's in your line of sight, and deploy the building. It's delivered from above, and after the appropriate period of time your building is ready.
The goo doesn't really bother with expansion, and so far as I can tell (I haven't played as them yet) has no structures at all. Instead, it appears that they have a production unit called "mother goo" that is both a harvester and production center. You place it on top of a resource node, and have it build units.
I feel like that's basically the difference in factions. I'd personally be very comfortable building with everything connected like that- I'd essentially treat it like 'creep' and just slowly and steadily expand- I think with the humans you need to focus on defense before offense. Build a bunch of turrets, defensive structures, etc.
Also, humans can 'teleport' structures along the conduit- maybe you can teleport your main base eventually? It also lets you do things like warp a bunch of the proper turret to the location under attack, instead of having to wait for units to move there or build new defenses. In fact, if you were to treat the Humans and their conduits like the bridge building system from Netstorm, I imagine the humans could potentially be a very dangerous blitzkrieger faction, depending on how expensive the conduits are.

My blog
I just took on the red brotherhood base... had to try it three times and adjust my strategy (and probably get luck), finally managed to do it... barely. Was out of arrows, half dead, and half of my dudes were down and that was with careful planning and some luck. The *entire* point of going was to loot a rare gem that you can turn in for certain quests or upgrades. The *entire* *point*. It wasn't part of the loot though it's 'hidden' in the camp. You only get one shot at this camp that has the gem in it. I mean with the battle won all I had to do was poke around the two caves to find the chest, wouldn't have taken a minute but I FORGOT due to the tenseness of the battle... so yeah guess who's gonna be doing that scenario a fourth or possibly fifth time now

At this point, I think you're fully within your right to use cheats to win the battle; maybe make a note of how many men survived it originally and then disband the ones that "died" afterwards.

Nah it's fine I'll do it again. Just got to bring a bunch of elite crossbows and slowly advance them. If I can kill the signalian leaders before they rapid fire my lads down in the later part of the fight I've got a good chance.
So, I just found out that they have the DS re-make of FFIV on steam. This is the game that first gor me interested in RPGs and a genre, and introduced me to the FF series. It's will be nice to finally play it on a screen bigger the 2" .
In other news, I found this.... song.

Oh Gods, that battle when you have to face the 4 bosses in a row...
The DS remake of the FFIV had the difficulty of the Japanese game so some bosses were rage-inducing. One of my favorite JRPGs ever. Well, it has Golbez, so that helps. Golbez <3 such a sexy beast

They were good in native too, for sure. I think even dismounted knights are better 1-1 than the red brotherhood dudes, it's just that you have to chew through what seems like fifty of them and I can only carry so many arrows The Barclay sappers are preeety sharp at shooting, just have to watch out for one or two enemies spawning in weird places and flanking us.
You know, (though it was like, 5 years ago) the game became Abandonware, and there's now a free version you can get offline. It's still got a somewhat thriving (maybe? time makes fools of us all) community mostly made up of Russians, as far as I can tell. But the meta's turned completely into Bridge Rushing where you just encircle the enemy as fast as you can before they can get any towers going. A perfect example of a single game mechanic that was overlooked- if you could only have more common and cheap bridge-destruction systems it would be much more fun.

Two mods that I consider essential are When Dragons Attack and When Vampires Attack - or something along those lines. Makes regular folks run and hide instead of attacking barehanded.
Yeah I always have more trouble with master vampires killing townsfolk than dragons. Dragons usually show up for me at the college of magic or dawn..star I think it was? But vampires... yeah no good for townsfolk.
Le Sigh... beating that stupid red brotherhood lair definitely involved luck, another attempt ended poorly. Those signalian leader ladies must have immense powerdraw to hit me that hard through my armor, and their attack speed is phenomenal...
Well if the townsfolk is more often a character that has pretty much no quests to them whatsoever i'm fine with it but i get the feeling i may have just not found them. Sadly some of those female townsfolk with no dialog are pretty cute ;P. Perhaps it's a jab at people not caring about anything pretty people have to say as they'd rather see the view.
Last i checked there was almost nothing to do at dawnstar anyway. There was probably 2 or 3 big things to do and then the whole place is a waste. Same goes for the college of magic. Nobody actually gives much of a crap about winterhold. They just care about the college because that's the important part. I find it funny the people there are annoyed at people not caring about them too much because in truth i don't and prefer to see the college.
I do think it's funny the ridiculous feelings that can come attached with being the dragonborn just like any other god-mode game. Basically you become king of the universe.
"I have 5 homes, multiple children, a wife, a mansion, i'm a jarl's b*tch in every town, i am the best at everything even out-doing people that have worked their craft for 20 years easily, i'm the dragonborn and can kill with my voice, i'm super awesome in every way and legolas sucks my d**k on a daily basis."
Perhaps that gives a ridiculous sense of entitlement to people that aren't aware of real life?
I dunno i might go back to playing skyrim at some point. The sneak heavy archery type of character is still really powerful even if i haven't been upgrading the archery bit so much lately. I pretty much am at the late game where you start leveling up crappy skills you never use for your character in order to level up your character and get skills unlocked for what you do need (basically when the game gets boring or at least it does for me). Also as for sneak archers having trouble with dragons if i'm in a real bind i just switch to sneak mode and drink an invisibility potion and the dragon usually gets bored and wanders away. It also might happen if you get a really good sneak potion done.
--------------
As far as games go i dunno if this counts since it isn't a video game but i played warhammer fantasy today against a faction called 'dogs of war'. It was an updated fan-made faction which honestly isn't that powerful. Perhaps he didn't use em right? I won though part of it was because his leadership 9 general unit managed to panic twice though i did force a lot of panics on his units. I've gotta say it was fun despite the bad luck on both sides (one of my cannons misfired as usual and the first wound the doomwheel took forced it to lose control and move in a random direction. I even used doom flayers and they managed to do ok in a flank. The last fight of the game was crazy though. My general and his unit (hitting him in the front), my abomination (hitting him in the rear) and 2 doom flayers (hitting him in the flank) managed to kill off the whole unit paymaster included and the abomination didn't even finish it's thunderstomp attacks. So basically i tabled him on turn 5-6. Normally i lose games so i'd say this army is probably on the weaker side but it's definitely a nice change from all the elf and lizardmen players i'm used to facing.
--------------
Currently i'm curious which game i should play. Galactic civilizations 3 has most of its features now so i might try that again.

I think my favorite thing in that game was somersaulting up to a giant and one-shotting it with a dagger
Oh and the throat-slit animation never seems to get old.. dunno why. More recently I got a mod that lets you sneak attack with spells, that makes for all kinds of fun characters even if the multiplier was only maybe 1.5 or something.
Muahaha finally kilt all of those bandits. Those Singalian leaders (not even sure if they show up anywhere else) were a pain in the butt. Well the chest, as I was facing them while getting arrowed to death. I managed to kill all three to death and let my boys loose to kill the rest although I think 3 permadied. Still I have the second gem and now I should be able to craft the UBERBOW that's even better than the one I have now. Yay.

I never did play much with a spell character though i think the additions the expansions had with the archers being able to slo-mo death animation people was awesome. I could totally see a sneak mage though. Use invisibility and then sneak up behind somebody and freeze their mouth shut or turn em to ice or something. It would definitely add more interesting characters.
Oh and as much as i love dagger sneaks the archery ones are still infinitely better. It's sad though as i prefer being a dagger sneak. It just sucks when they turn around sometimes on their patrol and then screw everything up. I also never used pickpocketing that much but i suppose i could do it to enemies for some added hilarity later on.
"Hey you!" *turns around half naked with no armor except a helmet and no weapons*
"What the?! Why am i equipped with a sweet roll?!"
Then you get attacked by a dude that can only punch you.
Btw how does the 'dark brotherhood' and the vampire hunter quest-line work. For some reason i got the black hand of the assassin's guild and nothing else happened (the one you get for helping the aretino boy). Also for whatever reason i couldn't find the vampire hunters as hard as i tried. I tried going to the place on the map where it showed me and in one thing it wouldn't let me go passed a point and in the other i couldn't find a way to the point on the map it kept showing me. Nobody was where it wanted me to go and it was hard enough to get there. Wtf do they want me to do?

The sneak attack spell mod never worked for me, it had an annoying bug of always triggering a kill-cam upon cast and the attack (in my case, the ice ones) never actually connecting, just hitting the floor at the enemy's feet. It was a known bug at the time that rendered the mod unusable.

Huh, I dunno if I got one that worked or I got if before/after the bug but it always seemed to work fine for me.
Did you ever get to 100 sneak? You can just crouch to temporarily vanish and usually that lets you swing out more sneak attacks. I had a dark elf that dual wielded scimitars (forgive me ) and would swap a dagger out to the mainhand for executions and the swords for when the jig was up, but that shadow vanish thing is ridiculously good. I dunno if I had a bow sneak get to that point. I guess that same character probably had one.
Bwahah and wolfbode the slayer has been defeated! Although... I mean... there was already an army of maybe 600 fighting his army of 300... but I still totally iced him personally with my bow and took out upwards of 10 of his personal guards that give almost every other unit fits.... so I feel my contribution was worthy. But man, epic fight is epic. I guess normal Calradian battles could get that big too but still. Dude was twice as wide as a normal NPC and had a horned demon looking horse it was great lol. And then I talked to him at camp and traded his freedom for a gem of all things. Epic loot gem but still.. feel a bit bad for letting him bribe his way free.

I'd rather not leave loose ends. It really depends how much of a threat he is to you. If not then so what if he was then kill him immediately. I don't have mercy for any serious threats to me. Nothing personal (well sorta but not on a normal level) i just can't have somebody out-do me in power and leave them the possibility to do it again and possibly succeed.
Well if that particular action wasn't the only renewable source of those gems, and if I didn't need more of them than I had at the time, I wouldn't have let him go
Been playing Stranded Deep, pretty good game for Alpha.
Its oddly relaxing, being stranded on tropical islands and doing your best to survive. The Jaws-esque music as sharks approach is a fun touch. Hope they put in bigger islands though. And some salt water crocodiles!
