I had an embark in a frozen land- wanted to make a fortress entrance out of ice. Embarked with an aquifer, used the screw-pump method to get through it, but when I tried putting in a well, with the aquifer (which, by the way, was pooling nicely next to the farms) it just froze.

Wait. There's a way to, "pump," out aquifer?
Teach me sensei! Many a fort I had to abandon because I couldn't get past the darn stuff (though it did make for some nice overland games).

Alright, gonna lay down some Dwarf Fortress Aquifer busting tips for ya'all.

First method- the Collapse method.

This one is simple, yet also somewhat dangerous. What you do is find your aquifer, and dig out a room above it (make it a pretty big room)- then channel out the floor of that room- the area channeled will flood, due to Aquifer. Then, make sure you have a layer or two (or more) of stuff above that- dirt, stone, what have you. Dig and channel around that so that the central 'plug' of earth collapses into the flooded aquifer-level channeled room you prepped earlier- you should now be able to dig through the center of this area- this is why you need a large room.

Benefits of this technique are that it doesn't require anything but mining- downsides are that it's somewhat unreliable and difficult to pull off.

Second Method- Screw Pumps.

Now Screw Pumps are part of the Engineering side of things, and so are a little more complex than some. The thing to know about them is they're 2 tiles wide, pump from below one tile, and to the side of the other.

diagram, where 0:0 is the pump, =>is output, w is water.
0:0=>wwwww
W

Screw pumps take a Giant Corkscrew, some blocks, and I think a mechanism- all things that can be made out of wood and/or stone- the corkscrew is a basic crafting thing, the Mechanism must be made at a Machine Shop (or whatever its called- it's been a while). You can orient them when you build them, but you need to do a little setup first. Then, the pump must be manned by a Dorf- these guys can really pump, though. One screw pump will generally be able to remove water faster than the aquifer can replenish it, and so you'll have a relatively dry area that you can then dig through- be sure to wall off your stairs or shaft first, though. And make sure you have someplace for the water to go- if you mine out a large area, that can make a good farm once the water dries/goes back into the aquifer. There's also a trick to putting the water back into the aquifer, but I'm not entirely sure how that works.

There is not this idea.

Oblivion, for some reason.

People actually seem nostalgic about this game now, which feels odd, because I remember a lot of people utterly loathing it when it was new.

I thought it was decent, but not amazing. Guess I'll see if that holds true!

I loved Oblivion when I got it, and I still like the game.

I still think it's the weakest of the Elder Scrolls titles. Animation and gameplay are in that strange inbetween place where they were starting to figure out realistic looking stuff, but hadn't mastered 'Realism', and the story is, I think, an odd duck among the Elder Scrolls, seeing as you're not actually the Protagonist.

Every now and again, I get the urge to restart Oblivion. Usually, I last up until right about the time that the game forces me to listen to Martin give a speech.

Listening to him give a speech usually kills any further urge I have to play the game.

>.<

I suspect a lot of people like it because it was the first Elder Scrolls game that they played. Morrowind was the first big hit in the series, but it and the earlier games looked dated by the time Oblivion was released. And while I may be misremembering, my recollection is that Oblivion was the first game in the series to get a truly massive amount of PR before the game was released. That was likely due to Morrowind showing a big enough profit to justify the added cost of an expensive pre-release ad campaign. Something like that would have drawn in additional players who otherwise would have been unaware of the game.

It's interesting, because Morrowind wasthe first one I played, and it's still my favorite. But how much of that is also nostalgia?

I remember being disappointed by Oblivion's setting, because the forests and plains and mountains seemed so bland in comparison to the almost alien feeling that Morrowind had.

Morrowind is a legit good game. The issues people have with it are all due to things like graphical fidelity and quality of animations, and a lot of that can be fixed through mods on computer. The story, actual gameplay, and of course setting, all stand up to time.

Oblivion isn't bad, per se, but it is kinda awkward.
