Trying out the Battlefield 1 Beta. The gameplay is fine, but I feel really underwhelmed by the "World War One" aspect. I teach history, with a bit of focus on World War One and it just doesn't feel right.

I was always sceptical about World War One translating to a video game, but everyone is just running around with SMGs, the tanks are flying all over the place at high speeds. I don't know what I expected... but I'm still disappointed.

The actual game play and merits of it as a game seem fine though. The guns feel good, the Beta map that you play on looks cool, especially when the fog rolls in or a sandstorm comes up on you obscuring visibility. But it doesn't really seem like it would matter if this was World War One, World War Two, post-war, alternate universe, etc. it would still play the same way. It just has the skins to give the appearance of World War One era technology.

I'm still enjoying my peaceful exploration of the universe in No Man's Sky. It is such a lovely game. Also dabbling in Mech Warrior Online- I may just pick up one of the resistance packets for the extra colors, and the tremendous eyesore of the Cataphract loyalty variant. It looks like they armored a mech in mood rings! If it turns out it shifts color as it moves, I'll be totally in.

I thinks it's more Dice and that they increasingly have lost what made BF1942 and Vietnam such great games. After the fiasco of what they did to the revamped Star Wars Battlefront and cutting so much that that made Battlefront 2 a nice little title I'm a bit wary about signing up to BF One.

As for what I've been playing this evening, that's Mordheim and kicking some butt with the "The Sashed Blades"!

"Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. " - V

I'm rather sad about how little, well, trench warfare is in BF1. I figured that the modern military shooter, with its 'die? just respawn and run back to the front lines!' mentality would allow for a decently meat-grinder-y experience. But like you said, aside from having a few more semi-autos and horses, it seems like just a re-skinned Battlefield not-1.

Also saw that Factorio now supports achievements, so we may dive back into that for a bit as well.

All we need now is for Stardew Valley to finally get its coop mode and we're really taking.

After years of denouncing it, I caved in and bought Call of Duty: World at War on a Steam sale. Actually looks a bit better than I expected. Hopefully it will fill the short linear FPS void once filled by Halo. Still skeptical about the multiplayer however, and will likely avoid that.

On a side note, just realized Borderlands 2 is strangely relaxing for a shooter game. I'm still trying to figure out why this is the case.

Eh, I found Borderlands 1 more relaxing.
I found the barrage of meme nonsense, garishness and non-sequitors in BL2 irritating. Its a good game, in that the gameplay is fairly solid, but the writing and atmosphere is inferior to its predecessor.

IMHO BL2 is mildly relaxing, and BL1 is more so. A lot of that is the lack of lots of suprises (or at least ones that make you have to respond), and how you can play it very slowly, headshotting your way through bandit camps from a distance then either repositioning with phasewalk/deception for a multikill or pressing F and letting the game play itself for you with your turret/pet bird/deathtrap/meat bicycle mode. Plus the music out of fights is pretty calming, so travel isn't stressful.

There is not this idea.

BL1 was the first game I played where I felt like I made a character who was overpowered. I'm normally not attentive or patient enough to set up my skills right in those kinds of games, but phasewalk ended up being crazy powerful even with my confused choices.

And yeah, it was pretty fun and relaxing too.

I just played Hearthstone (non-training) for the first time, and I won. Against another human person, I guess. Not sure how that happened.

Yeh, Phasewalk is pretty OP. Try Brick. He's tough, and deals a lot of damage, but you will probably die a lot anyway as his action skill is basically "WAAAAGH! Charge the gi - oh zog I'm dead".
You will probably kill what you're punching, and its pretty good at taking out Badasses and bosses early on, but you will die eventually.

I blew my one friend's mind the first time we played together. He'd only ever played Roland and, uh, the Firehawk before. We went in against 9-Toes, and I just Raged and punched his face in, first try, 10 seconds of fight. He had no idea I could do that, and his reaction was amazing.

The fight was over in no time. Easiest boss fight ever.
His ability seems to be a bit useless though in the Zombie DLC; for some reason my punches can't reach the end boss, and its really easy to get immobilized and stunned thanks to defilers and tankensteins.

The writing and humor in this is so much better than in the more recent games. I didn't find BL2 funny, but I did chuckle during Knoxx and even the zombie DLC.

Finished claptrap robot revolution. Its short but sweet. I think the DLC has increased legendary drop rates, because I found something like 5 or 6 throughout the whole thing.

The achievement where you get the collectibles is a pain in the ass though. They made the drop rates so low.

Playing Borderlands 2 now, now that I finished BL1 as Brick (only on playthrough 1 though).
By the way, late game Brick is an absolute beast. Once you complete his tank tree he becomes really hard to kill, and completing the blastmaster tree allows him to deal some incredible damage as well. His active is still useless against some bosses, but really you don't need it, as you'll be dealing a lot of damage with guns.

Yeah, I think I prefer BL1. I don't like the cartoony aesthetic, weapons and gimmicks in BL2, and the plot is a garish rehash of the Secret Armory of General Knoxx, except with an over the top villain who really needs a mustache, a scratchy voice or a claw, or even all three.

Seriously, the plot to BL2 reminds me of a particularly vulgar saturday morning cartoon that's trying really hard to be serious.

The UI is a bit better, but I found BL1 easier to get into.

I'm torn because I like them both equally, but for different reasons. BL1 was fun, had some cool characters, but generally had a meh plot. It was find the vault, that's it. Right from the get go, BL2 sets up with a pretty a-hole villain, especially when he kills two of the characters I liked
Spoiler:
Mordecai's bird and Roland
.

Then the run up to take him out was pretty cool, and it ended with a satisfying boss fight. Sure the aesthetic changed some, but BL1 has always been cartoony, going back to the first boss of BL1, Toe-Cutter. I don't get a lot of the hate BL2 gets. Sure it wasn't as good as BL1, but all the tie-ins, characters showing up, and the extra stuff they threw in (how Zero and the DLC characters play totally different from the BL1 cast) were pretty dang cool.

Yeh, I'm playing mechromancer. The damage is real
BL2 is pretty fun, it just changes a lot of things that I liked in its predecessor, though it improves a bunch of stuff as well.

I'm probably one of the few people who actually liked the story in BL1, especially if you count the DLC.
BL2's story feels too much like a stereotypical, big budget hollywood film to me, complete with unfunny forced humor that can't decide if it's for adults or children. So basically Transformers 2.
