It's been said a couple of times already in the thread, but Carlos mentioned that they expect those 5000 copies to last through the first half of next year.

With the best will in the world towards Infinity, and even if they have drastically underestimated popularity, this isn't going to be 'blink and you miss it'.

Maybe I am overestimating the number of infinity players then.

I think I am too, who knows maybe the booth will be empty and yellow stickered starter boxes will sit around in stores for years hence... still gonna hit the infinity booth first thing Friday.

Note Kan's comment about GW's Hobbit box-sets, and that's selling something on top of a massive worldwide movie release and global reach in sales. You may be over-estimating how many wargamers there are!

Bearing in mind that all of this is based on CB's Carlos himself, I accept no responsibility if someone does blink before they order and then they are gone!

How does it being limited stop people getting into the game? Bear in mind that it is effectively a two player starter, unless people are picking it up for both factions. Thats potentially between 5 - 10,000 new players. For a game like Infinity thats probably a pretty substantial increase in the player base. So its hardly stopping people from getting into the game. Now some existing players will no doubt pick up copies for the new sculpts etc but i expect the majority of sales will still be to new players.

Yeah.

The pan o models (minus the father knight) will be released later as the new pan o starter.

The nomads (minus the Reverend healer) will be the new nomad starter.

The father knight and reverend healer won't be available again.

^^^ Lol. The gaming world doesn't revolve around GW. Nor is GW the first to do things like this. GW isn't much for originality of any sort now, are they? Ask again when CB announces an IPO.

Tunnel vision is a very sad thing. Especially when the grim darkness is the "light" at the end of it.

Not so wise to announce this as LE, unless they plan a next set of 5000, which will include 2 other starters that need re-doing, like the CA (which currently does not exist). I suspect they are testing the waters with this, to see how it goes.

Given the announcement that the terrain( including game-mat?) will be available for individual sale, as will the starter boxes themselves, that leave only the dice that need to be sold separately. The paper templates, meh. The rulebook? It will be scanned and torrent ready in no time. Not that this is not condoning piracy, infringement etc.) So I think everything will still be available, just not in one box.

Great Janissary. Must get. And the most important question I will ever ask on this forum. When can I get Yojimbo? Iif you know the connection between Yojimbo and my screen name, you'll understand

Maybe they worry that having a 'fixed' starter will end up 'forcing' new players into just those two factions, and thus end up unbalancing the fan base?

or that stores might decide to drop a bunch of SKUs in favour of a single starter set

(I think this would be a real effect, especially on B&M game stores with limited space and an ever bigger range of products from all manufacturers to find a place for)

They could be testing the waters, since a starter set is usually bought by people new to this hobby, so Corvis Belli can see if people are fine with having complex pewter miniatures to work with when they start, or if it would be better to offer the newbs styrene.

Does this starter contain beginner rules or something to help new players ease into things? Or just minis, terrain and a small rulebook?

It contains starter rules and introductory scenarios - the full rules are available online (except campaigns, but that's about it) for free.

Sorry, I only saw the picture of the models and the buildings, I don't watch Beast of War stuff.

But thanks, it's hopefully a better way of getting into the game than trying to get through the rulebook I have right now.

Oh dear - please don't use the rulebook for the rules!

Seriously, watch the "how to play infinity" vids (takes less than an hour) then spend a couple hours clicking through the infinity wiki - IMO that's enough to pick up a decent basic understanding of the system.

Never, ever use that awful book

I suppose it's too late for a refund on these poorly translated books?

edit.

I kid, but thanks, I'll look into the given suggestions!

The books are pretty, and loaded with fluff. IMO that is their real purpose. Even knowing icestorm and N3 are coming out, i just recently got the v2 rules, having fun going through the fluff and pretty pictures... though yeah the rules... ouch.

Besides the infinity wiki and l2p videos are, if not the only example of their kind, far superior and really helpful compared to a lot of others. The intro videos are superb and helped draw me in, kickstarters looking to sell their game from the video should really look at how it's done for infinity.

I like the rulebooks.

But when it comes to actually playing the game, it's much better to just have an internet connection with access to the wiki... and a printout of all the unit/weapon statlines.

I agree on the fluff parts, those are the only parts I could really get through without any trouble!

Is it worth getting the 2nd edition rulebook still, for the fluff and stuff?

Personally I love the fluff and the accompanying art, it's a weird anime-ish style they've used for character art and the odd three panel mini comics.

Gathering the Informations.

Not at all.

The fluff is meh and the art is even meher. It's almost all "manga" styled artwork but when you get into Campaign Paradiso and Human Sphere you have a mixture of the two styles.

I'll have to get those too eventually, some of my favorite units don't even exist in the nilla rulebook.

That's personal opinion but even though I'm a new to infinity I got all books (even 2Nd E rulebook). I'm still reading all of them, jumping between all three to read everything related to one fraction.

Personally I think the fluff for this game is amazing. Comparing that to wh40 where everything was concentrating around war, in infinity you got plenty of info about everyday life and different fraction politics. Art, apart from dated rulebook is also nice if you don't mind anime like aesthetic. I don't regret buying all books and I hope they will release new artwork and sketch books in the near future...

Well, the main point with the fluff and art is the 3rd edition rulebook will pretty much be updating it. it will be the same fluff, but better translated and expanded. The art will be redone in the current style. So if you're after art for core units and the base fluff for the game, the 3rd edition rulebook will give you what the 2nd edition rulebook is giving you, just 'better'.

That said, if you're a completionist, there's no reason to not buy it. The books aren't exactly expensive.

On Operation Icestorm, that's interesting. Doesn't affect me much since I'm not a new player and the factions in it don't interest me, but it's still an odd choice to do it as a limited run.

That said, it's spurred me to pre order a set, as I was going to buy it for my nephews for Christmas.

EVERY time CB has been asked they has basically said "We like metal".

Don't worry he has to bitch about something or he feels left out . It is not like it is billed as manga/anime aesthetic on Infinity homepage or anything .

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor.

No. bostria said ( to me, after the Interplanetary) that when this run sells out, they will worry about what to do, but nezt runs won't have the Csu for example. From what I'D understood, there will be other runs after this one. It all depends on how well it sells I guess.

Father knight is a little 'heroic scale', as per CB staff. He's the hero of the box and the coolest model, thatt's why. No bioengineering. He's just a big guy.

Sorry for the messy post, on a tablet.

For the love of...

So he posts this morning that the 5000 is it and there will be no more. Then he tells you this piece of information.

Also not sure why they would not have the CSU since it appears to be a brand new Mercenary with a game profile.

Which is actually what I liked about the Father-Knight. Shows a bit more dimorphism amongst the personnel than just the standard "males are taller and buffer than females" nonsense.

Sorry for the messy post, on a tablet.

Your post is a piece of classical literature compared to some of the CB posts...
