And now instead of doing anything productive today I watched Sword Art Online up thru the current 15 episodes. Pretty good series!

So being that I like fantasy so much I decided to watch a couple of classics I have never seen before. I went with

Nausicaa an the Valley of the Wind to start. Pretty good art style and definitely a cool story. I usually don't like ferngully esk movies; aka save the environment mankind is evil. But I thought this one wasn't half bad, especially for the time it came out in. An the american version has Asbel voiced by Shia Labeouf, so double win. Not one of my favorites by any means, but it was worth the watch imo. Oh an I hate bugs...

JUST got done watching Myazaki's version of The Borrowers. Thought it was pretty well done in the same style as all his rest. Not as "epic" as some though.

Also watched the first two episodes of the Girl und Panzer the other night. Also not bad. They've just teased with the tank battles so far but they look like the could be well done. The sub titles are annoying though in the way they sprinkle in a bunch of German. It doesn't sound to me like they're speaking German, just translating some phases to it instead of English, sometimes whole lines, and I'm left wondering just what exactly they said. There is even a part where one character says Panzer Vor in actual German. Another character asks what it means, and she replies Panzer Vor means [something Japanese] and you can clearly hear her saying the phrase in the two languages, but the subtitle is Panzer Vor means Panzer Vor. Gee, that really clears it up, thanks. I'll at least watch it till the first full tank fight to see how it goes.

I recently finished Neon Genesis Evangelion. Argh.

First, the ending was...Confusing to say the least. I liked it, but it screwed my mind sideways. What has happened? Have the events of the previous 25 episodes all been in Shinji's head? Has he finally snapped? Did he nearly cause instrumentality and brought everyone back? Is Hideaki Anno a massive troll who enjoys confusing and disturbing people?

Secondly, episodes 22 and 23 were...the most disturbing things I have ever watched, EVER. Period. Asuka's mind rape was so horrible that it got stuck in my mind for a whole day after. The pseudo-rapey imagery didn't help. And to cap it all off, FETHING HALLELUJAH was playing, which made the whole thing 10 TIMES WORSE. 23 decided to include even more rape imagery ("PENETRATION WARNING" for crying out loud!) and as for the bit where the Angel and Shinji's hands started sprouting Reis...Ugh. The "It hurts, Shinji" bit really made me shudder.

An absolute masterpiece? Unquestionably. But bloody hell...

Do NOT let your kids watch it. Just...don't. I'm 16, and generally pretty unshakable, but 22 and 23 actually left me feeling ill.

Panzer Vor translates to "Tanks roll out" you should really go watch the episodes again on crunchy roll, which has the actual full translation subs as opposed to the fan subs you're currently watching.

How does everything you describe make Evangelion a masterpiece? Its a huge mess. The director was going through mental problems hence why all of the characters were nuts towards the end for pretty much no reason and he had to redo the ending like 3 times I believe. Go watch End of Evangelion. I was so disappointed by the show I never even bothered with it, but I know what happens in End of Evangelion.

I swear I still don't get why people like the franchise at all for anything beyond the mecha designs.

It was a masterpiece because it was so original. Shinji didn't win his first battle with ease in typical Mecha show fashion; if it weren't for the soul of his mother going berserk at the thought of her child being hurt, he would have been killed. It adressed mental health issues, and presented believable characters with believable problems. Likewise, it doesn't trivialize the large amount of destruction the Evas cause. The amount of buildings deetroyed by the combat between Shinji and Sachiel? Another character's sister gets hospitalized as a result, and Shinji gets beaten up for it. The ships damaged by Asuka's leapfrog antics in the ocean? NERV gets cautioned for the expense of the havoc caused. Shinji nearly kills Toji when the dummy plug activates? He doesn't just go "Oh no, my best friend nearly died because I couldn't control my Evangelion" he becomes wracked with despair from the horror and threatens to detonate Unit 01's core and wipe out NERV. Likewise, the Evangelions don't have some stupid "ULTRA GOLD FIRE SWORD CANNON OF DOOM ATTACK!" they go berserk and try to stab the angels to death, or even EAT them. Yes, most of the characters end up insane, because let's face it, anyone in their position with their pasts would. Asuka's mind rape for example: imagine being forced to relive the most horrible memories you have...Again...And again...And again...And again...

Would you seriously be able to just brush that off?

It wasn't original. It did stuff that past mecha shows have done. If you look at the show at its core its just a Monster of the Week show. If you aren't sure what I mean just look at old 70's super robot shows. Every week they come up with a new angel and a new way to kill it each time. Its a repetitive formula and the show does nothing new.

Not every pilot wins the first battle with ease, but he won it with ease because his mother did it all. He didn't have a super ultra mega attack, but his mecha pretty much goes berserk acting as its own form of a mega attack. It addressed mental health issues? All it did was make everyone go crazy for no reason. I can understand the amount of damage, but that doesn't characterize it as a masterpiece. A show is a masterpiece for actually telling a good story. Eva's story is a muddled mess that makes no sense until you actually play the game. In fact in order to even understand why Angels are attacking the earth you need to play a video game that was made only in Japan. The show is riddled with holes and its because the director dropped the ball about halfway through the series due to mental health issues.

All of the characters were just props. They didn't actually do anything. I don't ever recall any of them progressing from their starting point. They were all static and if they changed its because they suddenly went crazy for no reason. The whole show just went mind feth for no reason because at the beginning there is no sign. Shinji is just a wimp and in a way is a bad Amuro clone.

Also I don't get the argument of "its realistic" making it good. For instance a certain gundam show kills off characters left and right. Its realistic, but its not heart wrenching or good because real life =/= entertainment. You have to get to know characters before killing them off. Evangelion gives you a bunch of unlikeable characters and makes them more unlikeable. I personally disliked the show because it was over hyped and I see people praise it as the end all be all.

I'm just glad you don't like it for its non deep references to christianity which were just shoe horned in to sound cool.

I'm not up for a huge argument so I'm not taking this any further. Incidentally, though, the Christianity references were never intended as anything major, and Hideaki himself admitted that if he had known the series was being exported to the west he would have left them out.

In short, the main characters are in "The Afterlife" and are fighting against god, mostly in the person of the student council president. There's a tonal shift as time goes on, but that's plot twisting

Evangelion is good but no where near as good as its hyped. It's not a work of art. Its the directors depressed rant in televised form that happens to be slightly entertaining for the first 25 episodes.

Mm, I'm not sure I like where SAO is going. It seems fine, and I'll watch it for this arc (or sub-arc), but after this, they'll have to do something else to keep me into it.

K is Lovely. It's owned by VIZ, so more than likely, normals will pick it up and circle jerk over it, but no big deal.

Tonari no Kaibutsu is great. Best show of the season, I'd say.

Watching Madoka, because suicide and death go great with little girls! There's a lot to watch. I'm not sure I have enough to time to get into it.

SAO starts off very episodic in my opinion, in that it's kind of random different stories that are mostly single episode each. Also kind of does a new female sidekick of the week thing for awhile. Gets more main story driven about half wayish thru the first season. And so far the second season is all main story advancement.

The best part is when one of them comments later on that he obviously doesn't have many female friends. I'm pretty sure it wasn't even intended sarcastically but was supposed to comment on his social awkwardness and they meant it as some factual statement about the character.

Yeah... considering he has about as many female friends as there are episodes... XD I actually just saw the ep where Asuna says that, I think she might have meant it hopefully tbh

Spoiler:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
As an aside I love seeing a legit battle couple trope played out as fully as they do in SAO, it's epic. Not to mention it's an actual healthy, developing... human, relationship in an anime, that's fecking awesome.

Edit: Just finished the Yui episodes and I now have ALL the feels.

Edit: and I just hit episode 15, was that kick in the balls to ANY one else? Or just me? Like I'm honestly considering dropping the anime XD

If your looking for a masterpiece that isn't as horribly dark as evangelion, then you should take a look at Haibane Renmei. Its a bit of a lost gem since it was made by independent producers but the story, imagery and themes struck very close to my heart. Yes, it does contain some mild mind screw but its in the nature of the story and its done on purpose so that you get a better deal in the long run.

If your looking for a something that sits somewhere like angle beats but without the music and more wtf, that was awesome (or the geass effect as i like to call it) then yo should defiantly watch this.

btw. im'm not saying its like code geass or anything. the genre is Drama, Fantasy, Slice of Life.
