Soladrin wrote: Well, there's a very easy explanation for that. This is the guys very first manga. He's doing the writing and art himself too. Also, it's not overlooked in Japan. It's already won some awards.
It's been critically praised for its story and themes but I meant that it wasn't making much money. Since the trailers for the Anime began airing though it's become a huge hit (which is good cause there was talk of it getting canned a few weeks before the boost from the Anime but now it seems the manga will survive).
If quickly leaf through the chapters you can see a steady improvement over time in the actual art. Especialy on the special types.
Will agree that the quality of the art has improved (but it's still definitely not the series' strong point).
Spoiler:
Who the hell do you think the beast type is? Since we now know who's inside every special type except for that. I keep getting an itch telling me it's the father but it just doesn't add up.... also... WHAT'S IN THE FETHING BASEMENT?!
I personally find the story thus far completely baffling. All the little clues that have been left are just one giant WTF after the next for me XD. Something seriously twisted must be going on in AoT's universe. EDIT: It's wtf in a good way though. The more we learn the more I want to know what is going on.
AND SERIOUSLY DO NOT OPEN THE SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SERIOUSLY!
BAD DAKKANAUTS!
Spoiler:
As for the beast type I'm guessing it's a character we haven't seen yet. He seemed unaware of the 3D gear that the military uses to fight, so my guess is that he's from beyond the walls and has only recently arrived (also odd in that Titans seem hostile to the characters able to transform but they're afraid of the beast type). More confusing is that it appear that titans are created from people in general (hence what happened to Connie's village) but how on earth has that not been noticed yet? Maybe the beast type is the key to it, but idk.
I'm much more baffled by what on earth Reiner and Bertolt busted down Wall Maria to achieve, cause they're families got wiped out by the fall of Maria (and presumably Annie helped them). They seemed repentent for it for a moment but why did they do it? Unless they're background is fabricated. And then we have to wonder what they want Ymir and Eren for (also curious if they're even aware Annie has been captured). The story right now is completely up in the air until the fight between Reyner and Eren ends imo.
Also, high fives for anyone who thinks Sasha is a total bad ass

I want to like Gargantia, I'll have to give the episodes a try. I just prefer people vs people in giant fighting robots, instead of people vs aliens or something. That's why I like Gundam series and not Evagelion.

The thing is, the people vs aliens is only the opening scene of the first episode. Afterwards it's definitely a completely different show.
Spoilered discussion on Gargantia up through Ep 3 below:
Spoiler:
Now that he's pretty much stuck there, the episodes 2 and 3 made it incredibly clear that while he can destroy anything that moves without even trying. The issue is, he needs the Gargantua fleet to survive (food, shelter, etc) but they frown on him just killing anyone who opposes them. This means he will most likely be just a weapon of deterrence to keep the fleet safe. The major thing that I'm unsure about is how long the mecha can sustain itself in this capacity. Surely it requires some sort of power recharge as well as occasional maintenance. How long until his mecha just is incapable of operation without the proper support? I'm hoping this will become a topic of discusson later. I'm not really counting on someone from space finding him, but you also have the looming threat of the space bugs. What if they show up one day? If they do I think everyone on the planet is screwed. Even more-so if his mecha isn't fully operable

After not having seen any shows in several years (with the exception of Gurren Lagann), I've rediscovered anime in the last two weeks. I'm looking for show suggestions, see what's come out in the last eight years.
My number one criterion is decent characters, for example I've just went through Bodacious Space Pirates; and somehow I like the show despite there being so little action. I'm just starting Spice and Wolf, and I already like the characters, even though I haven't seen any action yet. Second criterion is good action, and third is I'd prefer a protagonist who isn't a child.
Anime I like: Gurren Lagann, Bodacious Space Pirates, Gunbusters. Other media: Gunnerkrigg Court, Worm (the webfiction series)
So what shows do you like that you'd think I'd like based on that?
Four scholars at Oxford were making their way down the street, and happened to see a group of ladies of the evening. “What’s this?” said the first. “A jam of tarts?” “Nay,” said the second, “an essay of Trollope’s.” “Rather, a flourish of strumpets,” advanced the third. “No, gentlemen,” concluded the last. “Here we have an anthology of pros.”

If you can look past what people say about it on both sides, I say give Neon Genesis Evangelion, as that has in-depth characters and made by the same studio as Gurren Lagann, Gainax. (I might be coming off as a fanboy since I have an Eva profile pic so it might fall on deft ears). :/
If you are into Senien, and up for a little fast-paced action, I would also give Black Lagoon a try. Cowboy Bebop is one that is a must-watch, if you have not seen it yet. Others I would give a try is Ghost in the shell if you are into Cyberpunk and cop story kind of deal, and Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt if you want a good episodic anime that does not take itself serious (as again by Gainax).
Might be subjective I think, but I think a few of those might be a good go if you want to give them a try.

You and I think the same way, strong plot and character development over cheesy fanservice.
Last eight years? Lets see what I've found was great. I figure you can look into more on the titles yourself.
- A Certain Magical Index (Two seasons so far, Watch at least season 1 before railgun)
- A Certain Scientific Railgun (Second season currently airing, watch at least S1 of Index before starting)
- Black Lagoon (High octane action with great character designs)
- Code Geass (HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Has two seasons. You won't regret it)
- Durarara!! (Heavy with the character driven story, making it really good)
- Eureka seveN (Two series, first is better than second but both are good)
- Lupin III: The Woman Named Fujiko Mine (It's Lupin and of course it's done really well)
- Mirai Nikki (Walks the fine line of horror/insanity at times but incredibly good)
- Puella Magi Madoka Magica (AMAZING deconstruction of the magical girl genre. I don't like magical girl shows and loved this one)
- Steins;Gate (HIGHLY RECOMMEND!)
Those are just some of the impressive shows in the past 8 years or so that I would love to share with others for how well they are done and what I would show people to tell them that yes, indeed, the anime genre has shows that can be much more epic than than the best shows on air in the US.
The centre of a massive brood chamber, heaving and pulsating.
Well, I watched the first episode of Sailor Moon (the Japanese version, not the godawful dub). As horrifically dated and cheesy as it was, I loved it. The (admittedly primitive) animation was really charming, the characters are funny (even if Usagi is the absolute worst superhero ever...WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!) and the voice acting is good.
Also, need to watch more Haruhi. Watched the first episode (the unbelievably hilarious student film, which I swear is the funniest thing I have ever watched) and I loved it. Aya Hirano does such a good job as Haruhi, she sounds genuinely nuts, and yet utterly lovable. Must watch more!

The first season is gold, the second season is meh (Mostly because of the endless eight) however, you're then left with the Dissapearance movie which is one of the greatest things I've watched in the last few years. I went and read the book afterwards and was amazed at how accurate they were in interpreting the story into an feature length movie.

I may know little about anime, but I'd still add JoJo there.
There was a brief discussion of Tuxedo Mask at the flgs this week because someone had a Tuxedo Mask button on their Warmachine bag. In the end we decided the Rainbow Dash I had on my bag was manlier.

I see Fate/stay night, but not fate/zero. That was a good show too, and the animation was much crisper. The few years between the series really made a difference. If your looking to get the feels, watch Anohana, CLANNARD after story, and the original if you can drag yourself through it (its a tad dull compared to the sequel). Looking for explosions? Jormungand is a good show for that kind of stuff. Laughs? Baka and test, Azumanga Daioh and Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou are all classics.
Lots of suggestions, maybe I was too general in my post. To narrow it down, how about the overall feel I'm in the mood for today. What show captures the kind of magic of exploration, where you wish you were there too, just so you could discover the world/cosmos/universe one part at a time? A show in world were the world is a character itself.
Also when making suggestions, mention if the show has a half decent dub or not.

Pokemon? Digimon? Those have dam good universes as stock, and the dubs aren't disappointing for ether. Maybe I bit to old for you though. My sisters loved watching them with me....

hmmmm that may be more manlier, but I never really thought of tuxedo mask as manly. Hes so suave and slick, you can't help but fall in love with him

Railgun/Index for sure, but I've not heard anything about dubs. I've always watched them subbed so if that's a turn-off then your loss.
If you're looking for an epic story with an amazing dub, however, you cannot go wrong with Code Geass.
It should. Valvrave is being created by the same guy who wrote Guilty Crown and Code Geass. I suspect we will see many of the same themes in the series and a lot of similar plot devices (giant robots and supernatural powers ahoy!)

IMO there is no such thing as a decent dub so I can't help there.

Both Full Metal Alchemist series have really good dubs and really cool environments and story. Same with Cowboy Bebop, and Samurai 7
