I too was disappointed in Rock for his actions at the endof the anime's story arc... on some level. However, Rock doesn't really /need/ to kill any one though. He has Revy for that. (especially given her action girlfriend tendencies) Rock is well on his way to losing the "normal guy" status (if it's not already gone, and I certainly consider it to be so) and is well on to the path of the chess master. He's a tactician and strategist and just unglued enough to really be able to throw some crazy gak out of left field. Especially when his plan features a ballistic Revy at the tip.

This evolution is in the anime, but a further "jump" occurs in the OVA Roberta's Blood Trail. Either way, Rock has his morals, but they're drifting further and further from societal norms with every passing day and job.

I beg of you sarge let me lead the charge when the battle lines are drawn

I have not seen the anime, but in the manga it gets to the point that so much as threatening Rock is a surefire way to get Revy to put bullets in you

In the Anime...

Revy goes so far as to point a gun at Bella'lika for Rock, so yeah.

Spoiler:
And conversely, Revy gets tamer (using the word very lightly) as the series goes on. For a series I've never followed much, Rock and Revy are one of my favorite fictional relationships ever because the dynamic is so twisted in a really romantic way (and I admit I'm a sap)

Well too be fair, the Anime isn't actually over. It's just waiting for more of the manga to be written.

There's already an OVA out. I haven't seen it, but supposedly Rock does some...questionable things.

It's.... Interesting. Definitely looks like it's done by the same people as Gurren Lagann and is not at all meant to be take seriously. Watched the first episode I thought it was alright. My complaint at the moment is I wish her uniform was not so outlandish.

Alas, after enough anime, you almost start to expect that.

One of the nice things about high school animes: they have a clear and obvious ending point.

Okay fellas.

I'm 5 episodes in to NGE, and I have to say it's very boring and underwhelming. The characters are irritating, the story is just . . . bad, and the fights are all missed opportunities it feels like. They are slow and incredibly exaggerated when something does happen (buildings being cleanly sliced in half? ugh). I realize I'm still early in the series but honestly after 5 episodes it should have grabbed one's attention.

For the first time ever, I think I might abandon a show. How is this on IMDB's top animated series? Good thing I didn't pay for it.

That is common complaint about NGE is that the first 6-7 episodes are slow. Episode 8 picks up the pace much more and it keeps that pace relatively for the rest of the series. As for the story....it starts off bland, than it develops much more later on, and the characters are suppose to be kind of realistic and kind of unlikable, and they go into much more detail later on in the show about them, and boy, they are not your typical anime character crowd.

It gets better, but it tends to stick with the formula of one new angel to fight every episode or two all the way through and the ending makes no sense. It tries to be deep the farther it goes, but eventually it just falls on its face. I'd recommend finishing it just so you can see why everyone talks about it.

NGE is like Citizen Kane. A really bad movie looking back but you kind of get a lot out of watching it because of its influence on the genre. I mean, it's almost like Shinji and Rei are the archetypal characters for dozens of other (much better characters) who came after them;

Yeah. You'll be shocked just how many shows have a Rei Expy in them. A brief list; Darker than Black, Eureka Seven, RahXephon (itself a big NGE expy), Now and Then Here and There, Shakugan no Shana, Wolfs Rain, Code Geass, Guilty Crown, Angel Beats, Gunslinger Girl, Burst Angel, Requim for the Phantom, A Certain Magical Index, Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Zero the list goes on and on.

She's arguably one of the most influential anime characters from the 90's and possibly one of the most influential female anime characters ever created. The big irony here is that Rei is a deconstruction of the 'shy anime girl love interest' and she's spawned literally hundreds of shy anime girl love interests in other works.

To be honest, you could probably make a list for all the anime characters that the 3 main evangelion pilots have influenced. I mean how many "Shinji"s have we had. NGE has been incredibly influential to the development of anime to what it is today.

Which, also to add, she is one of the cultural icons of Japan to some degree, although Anno made her as you said a deconstruction of the 'Shy anime girl love interest', although she was meant to be more portrayed and come across as creepy and alien as Anno intended. Kind of poetic irony if you think about it. Also Yuki Nagato from Haruhi Suzumiya. I still think the show is overrated to a good extend (although I thought it was good), but I liked Yuki a lot. Maybe as much as Rei...

Although that makes me think of a dream I had once of Yuki and Rei playing a game of Infinity and then Warmachine....

Also, Eureka Seven was amazing and you should feel bad for not liking it.

Also, I didn't even bother watching the last 2 episodes of AoT... just couldn't be fussed, I've been up to date with the manga for months now and I just got bored with how the anime handled it...

Definitely. Asuka is far from the fist Tsundere character but she sure as hell took it from a common motif to any given anime probably has one (and like Rei, she's ironically intended to deconstruct Tsundere but only succeeded in increasing its popularity).

Hell, it's well past the point where the expies of characters from NGE are getting their own expies!

Honestly, NGE would probably have been a lot better dropping all the pseudo-Bible/Kabbalic symbolism entirely because the meaningless symbols that permeate the series horribly overshadow the series' actual themes and deconstructions of Anime. NGE is the anime that takes anime apart, but no one had time to notice because they were chasing the incomprehensible hodgepodge of Christian looking stuff.

I do not know. I mean, I guess the Mechas on air surf boards was cool, but the story was just a bit meh for me, and it felt drawn out to me (although my opinion on it. Not trying to sound like a Hipster douche of sorts, I just personally did not enjoy it. Maybe another go of it might change my mind).

I actually second Eureka Seven's story being 'meh' and i really enjoyed the series. Don't watch Eureka Seven (or AO) for the story cause you'll be disappointed cause they stop making sense really fast. Watch them for the character development. Renton and Eureka make one of the sweetest and most enjoyable to watch anime couples ever and their personal journey is the highlight of the series

Haha, don't worry I was just joking around, everyone has their own tastes. Hell, I can't stand half of the stuff that's mentioned in this thread, Girls and Panzer makes me vomit for instance. Actually, any anime with the standard cutesy girl motif makes me vomit, almost as much as fan service series.

And thus, I shall watch Saikano again to be as contradictory as possible. Because that gak will make me cry like a baby every time.

I think in an interview, Anno did say that the Christian/ Kabbalic symbolism was only really meant for show. Although I agree it could have done without it, as I facepalm at the fanbase at times for over-analysing the symbolism that is for just said showing among other things.

I don't see how Shinji really influenced anything. Whiny teenage pilot is nothing new to mecha and neither is having family problems or having your family be behind the creation of the robot you pilot. I can see how Rei influenced characters and Asuka as well, but not Shinji.

No offense to NGE fans out there, but NGE seemed like a load of bull to me. The themes/premise was good, but the characters and presentations stunk. Seriously, if I had to pick an anime from that same period to watch, I'd pick Escaflowne over NGE any day. Heck, even Victory Gundam was better than NGE, and Tomino was actually DEPRESSED when he make that series.
