The first OP theme is a very obvious clue that the show is just pure AWESOME.

Gundam is a "real" robot series, but there's still a lot requiring suspension of disbelief. I mean, 90% of the protagonists are kids, some of the designs are way over the top, you've got psychics and newtypes popping up left and right.

G Gundam is sort of "all that stuff we asked you to sort of suspend disbelief for? We're gonna embrace a bunch of it and just throw a bunch of Gundams in an arena."

That isn't to say I don't like the other series, but G Gundam doesn't have many defenders, so I'll jump in there.

I'd cut the original series some slack as it was the first to do it. The RR 'genre' then moved on while Gundam largely stayed the same (or started 'slipping' in some series, G-Gundam notwithstanding as the concept was meant to be totally different).

About Gundam protagonists being kids, you people do realize that they live in what TV Tropes calls a World Half-Empty/Crap-sack World, right? I mean half the population of the Earth Sphere were killed in the first week of the One Year War alone, and both the Principality and the EFF had all but exhausted themselves by the time the Battle of Loum ended. Child soldiers, while morally and ethically repugnant (which is I believe to be Tomino's point) aren't all that unexpected by that point.

Ya good point. It comes up in a lot of the series about youth having to take over, one of the characters even comments how the Zeon were forced to start using younger less skilled pilots towards the end of the One year war. I don't think children soldiers was his theme for the main characters, or any of the characters, I could be wrong though, and I could see it being interpreted that way. From what I recall a lot of it had to do with the younger generation having to clean up after the older generation, and the younger generations having to suffer from the mistakes of the older generation.

Also G-Gundam may not be my favorite series, but it does have one of the best slam jam remixes ever made

Ok, I understand why said Gundam isn't that popular, but considering I enjoyed Seed, Destiny and 00, maybe I'll like it... I'll have to one day watch the classic, tho.

So, yeah, Kill la Kill happened and damn, this just keep getting more awesome.

Spoiler:
New uniforms for the Elite 4 that are gorgeous, an enormous action scene between Satsuki and Ryuko while freakin' World War III was going on the background, Satsuki being awesome yet again, wow, Kill la Kill just NEVER fails to deliver.

Speaking of wacky nonsense, I just watched episode 14 of Samurai Flamenco. Holy crap that show's gone insane. How did it start out as a serious drama about a man wanting to be a super hero to... whatever the hell it's become? This show has gone full slow and I'm loving every minute of it. I really wonder how they're going to end it though. I honestly wonder if it'll turn out to be some kind of dream Hazama's having while in a coma after getting beat up on his first night on patrol. And how come Gotou's girlfriend has yet to show up?

Seriously, this episode topped it all.

Spoiler:
Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to see an army of heroes. I never thought all the "actors" were true heroes. So many power rangers among others, this was epic fun feth common-sense, this was so much fun!

Right, and child soldiers in that situation are understandable, but some of the series go too far to survive suspension of disbelief. When the best pilots of EVERY robot in EVERY series are 14 year olds (except Char, bless his heart), and everyone older than 20 is moving out of the way of the next generation because they're too old to be useful compared to said 14 year olds, it starts to get old after a while.

You can only run the "professional pilot dies and is replaced by child prodigy" play so many times before my eyes start to glaze over.

But this goes back to what was mentioned, that Gundam is sort of quasi-Real Robot at this point, and they generally try to shoe-horn a coming of age story into their war story. It's not a bad thing, most of the series are really good, but I think there's some dissonance as to what they're trying to be and get across and what they are.

Ya 0080 is awesome It is very different from most Gundam series, it's not an action series. It is about that characters and character development. The series is much better if you have an understanding of the greater story arch of the One year war and background in the other series. It is really short to. If your looking for a lot of robot fighting then I would not recommend it.

Pretty sure in Zeta Gundam a Titans MP mentioned that conscripts/recruits of around Kamille's age were still quite common even seven years after the One Year War. And in any case, Amuro was well over twenty during CCA, if that's any comfort to you.

Oh, I love the Macross Frontier songs, nice choice. That final battle when you had singing + epic battle at the same time was glorious.

Anyway, about Madoka Magica, finished watching it yesterday and I kinda have mixed feelings about it:

Spoiler:
Artistically, I consider it one of the best I ever saw. The drawing was pretty different than the normal, the design of the entire city and backgrounds were so futuristic and at the same time familiar, it reminded me a lot of Mirror Edge and that OST, oh God-Emperor, that OST: That final battle between Homura and the Walpurgis Night together with that very epic music really got me pumped up.
The witch's dimensions and the witches themselves were another awesome thing. They could have gone with the standard yet again, but feth that, they went with yet another imagination filled design.

The story and twists were very cool, now I understand why it was considered an "Evangelion" for the Magical Girls genre, it really kicked the crap of what's considered normal but at the same time I guess it was kinda boring? Maybe, just maybe, it's because I was feeling tired as feth omw back to Portugal, but several times my eyes started to close around eps. 6-9, some episodes I felt they lengthened the conversations way too much.

Strangely I didn't get attached to any character either. When Sayaki transformed into a witch and died I was just "meh".

Oh, and Kyubey is awesome I always thought that little thing was like Satan itself, filled with EEEVIL because of all the internet memes, but I was positively surprised I wasn't expecting that, not by a long shot: an alien race dedicated to the preservation of the entire universe, not doing it out of malice, but necessity. Loved it.

Well that sucks for you. Most people would consider last year to be one of the recent 'good' years of anime. Its easy to find something good. The shows with echi in them are normally quite easy to spot. I would recommend Noragami and Hamatora from this season and maybe log horizon and samurai flaminco from last.

I second Log Horizon, it's a very well-thought-out world - lacking in action early on, perhaps, but it has a few good fights in.

I third Log Horizon. It's one of the best "talkie" animes if you are / were into MMOs.
Noragami is a good bet, that voice actor turns everything into gold.
If you like Mechs, you can give Gundam Build Fighters a try. Yes, the Gundams are Gunpla, or Gundam Plastic Models, but nevermind that, it's fantastic.
Do you like Sports anime? If so, Ace no Diamond is pretty good. The MC was the best player in his school but that changed a whoooole lot when he was scouted. He was pretty much just another noob when compared to the other, trained, players so he has a sh*tload of work to do if he wants to play.

Yeah, SAO went from a "Holy gak, this is so freakin' cool!" anime to "MC and his romantic escapades with all the female players".

To say nothing of the fact that said MC is such a Mary Sue even Kira Yamato of GSD infamy pales by comparison.
