SAO is one of my top 20 anime IF and only if you agree to ignore anything happened after season one. Which is basically where I am with SAO. SAO ends with Kirito waking up IRL, with him going off in search of Asuna being implied as we get a nice fade to white and roll the credits.

I beg of you sarge let me lead the charge when the battle lines are drawn

I really enjoyed SAO (evidenced by my SAO Weiss Schwarz deck), but they really should of left the brocon sister out of it. I would have liked it better if Kirito and Suguha were estranged, and they managed to become normal siblings again as they adventured in search of Asuna. Have them fix the relationship that Kirito admitted in the 1st arc was strained. It would also feel like it tied more into "the fallout from the SAO incident".
I think the GGO arc will be better. I am hoping the 2nd season will do well because the current Underworld arc would be a really good watch (the LNs are slow but the setting and plot are well developed).

And holy gak, Kill la Kill just keeps pushing the throttle further and further. That Satsuki-Ryuko fight was sooo awesome. Throw in the comedy of Nudist Beach into the mix and it was just another great episode.

Seconded. I'm actually very curious what they're gonna do for the next ten episodes, as at this point
Spoiler:
the story's got no rails to speak of. Except the sheer power of awesome, which has worked so far.

This is probably one of the only anime I have ever watched where I haven't had a character that I don't like...the heroes, the "villians", the supporting cast...they all have added to the entertainment factor. I think the next episode will be dialed down some to include explanations and plot development, but with the way the series has gone this batch of talking will probably just lead to the next batch of OTT levels of awesome.

I've been a designated anime abstainer (don't want to say hater because that's too strong but not someone who has been interested in it) for most of my life. Mostly because some of it is seriously messed up weird and also because some of the "hardcore anime fans" I have met make me despair for the entirety of the human race.

That said I've been watching Yu Yu Hakisho recently and I love it. It's so incredibly weird but it's weird in a good way and the story is pretty interesting. I think I might follow it up with Fullmetal Alchemist.

After that maybe Robotech or Blue Submarine number 6, or cyborg 009. I have fond memories of those from Toonami when I was younger. Heck, maybe even Trigun or Outlaw Star... now I've got over my irrational fear of Japanese animation anything is possible.

The idea of "Way too weird" is in itself an odd one. If you come right down to it, humans are odder than anything else on the planet; it stands to reason that the things we imagine are stranger still.

But also in a sense, Western animation is as strange as anything you'll find from the Pacific- they just have a much more accepting culture for it, and so there's a ton more that'll run the gamut. But think about it- some of the most successful Western animations are about giant talking animals wearing clothes and having heavy things dropped on them/being shot/dressing in drag/making fun of political figures. You ever seen anything like that in Anime? Heck, the entire idea of having a show where the majority, if not all, the cast are talking animals is bizzarre when you consider that's what most Western cartoons feature- compared to, what, 2 or 3 out of Japan?

Not trying to make a point or anything- just pondering.

I don't know, I just watch tv as a way to laugh and not worry about everyday life so much. When I see these seriously dark moody series about people going insane and doing nasty stuff to each other I don't have any interest in watching them. real life is messed up enough as it is. I want lighthearted entertainment!

(this applies to a lot of current non-anime tv shows too, just saying)

Kill La Kill has consistently been ratcheting up the awesome, which is darn impressive since way back in episode 3 they the two main females face off in a scenery exploding battle, and they've only gone up from there.

I definitely look forward to every single episode of it.

The funny thing about Japanese anime being "weird" is that, objectively, I'm not sure it is.

I mean, the vast and overwhelming majority of animes revolve around people or human-like beings. Compare that to probably the most popular US cartoon of the past decade and a half, which featured a talking sponge as its main character, and a talking starfish, astronaut squirrel, and cynical squid as its key supporting characters.

Just finished Unbreakable Machine Doll. My brain hurts, and to say that 13 eps was clearly not enough would be an understatement. Feels like we cut a much longer series in half to get 13 eps.

Just finished Kill La Kill (well, up to episode 15). Dang. That is some awesome gak right there. Also watched Sword Art Online, and I really loved it... for the first 13 episodes or so. Once they escaped Aincrad and ended up in magical fairy land it was... less good.

Quick question to those of you who may be more familiar with Japanese culture. I've noticed in a lot of anime that the main boy/girl love interests seems to have a strong aversion to actually showing and/or speaking openly about their affection. Anytime they start to get close, one of them will sort of snap out of it and utter some line like "We'll do out best!" or something. Is that just an anime trope used to drag out the sexual tension or is that more of a cultural thing where Japanese people don't really tend to easily express emotions like love/trust/etc?

Just started Attack on Titan. Man is that show brutal. Main protagonists seem to bounce from weepy/RAGE in the blink of an eye, but God what a weird show.

From what I know Japanese are supposed to be quite reserved about their emotions, and I imagine anime relationships would reflect that cultural trait.

I'm betting that's sort of the 'start' of the trope- but I think this is a case of it becoming a sort of animation convention and perpetuating within the medium in a loop- It's done that way because it's "Always been done that way". Like how there's always some sort of chase sequence in American action movies.

Any one else been watching The Pilot's Love Song? Pretty serious plot twist at the end of this episode.

Spoiler:
So short version is that our hero is a former prince who was assumed killed in a revolution a few years back. The boy was spirited away by a peasant family and raised as their own. The boy is now... well not quite a man, but no longer a boy, and has been selected for a prestigious flight school on a floating island that is about to leave on a journey of discovery. There are rumors that the prince survives but most people ignore it as fancy. The young prince meets a girl, the daughter of nobility. They grow close... but they twist is, she is in fact the priestess of the wing that lead the rebellion against his parents.

Agreed. In the end, what was even the point of adapting it? In the end, they didn't even complete a single story arc. So many threads were started and just left hanging. I don't see this show getting picked up for a second season, either. So yeah, what was even the point?

Speaking of second seasons, BTOOOM! needs a second one.

Lots of PS3 games still being released, tho. The generation gap isn't going to be instantaneously crossed.

So, yeah, I was thinking about finally watching the fate/stays after I finished the first season of "Haiyore! Nyaruko-san" and let me tell ya, this sealed the deal. I discovered this while surfing youtube and this has to be one of the best opening I ever saw: It's crazy, fun, colorful, upbeat, catchy and energetic, oh so very energetic. It's pure genius!

I must watch the fate/stays to understand the jokes
Carnival Phantasm (カーニバル・ファンタズム Kānibaru Fantazumu?) is a comedy OVA series based on the Type-Moon Gag manga, Take-Moon (テイク・ムーン Teiku Mūn?) by Eri Takenashi, the author of Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens. The OVA series was created by Type-Moon to celebrate the company's 10th anniversary. The series focuses on funny and absurd situations happening to the various characters of the Type-Moon franchises, mostly from Fate/stay night and Tsukihime.

Wow! Just saw the first episode of Nobunagun today.

Is the premise of this series Kaiju in nature? If so, I'm going to be very pleased . . . if not, can someone here recommend an anime that has lots of giant monsters in it? This episode really got the taste in my mouth.

I'm fairly certain that Nobunagun is gonna be about the reincarnations of Historical Figures with superpowers fighting Kaiju. So yeah.

Though- do you want Kaiju as in stomping around cities Kaiju, or more fighting-on-equal-terms Kaiju?

Come to think of it, I can't actually think of an example of either off the top of my head...

I would love a series with either/or to be honest.

I have watched a lot of anime in my day and I can't think of a series either or I'd have watched it by now, that's for sure . . .

Maybe the more experienced animaniacs in this thread can chime in?

EDIT - ASIDE FROM NGE BY THE WAY. THAT SERIES SUCKED.

The remake movies were alright- mostly because they basically distilled the series into "Awesome" and "Weird" without as much of the angst or filler.

If you want a giant mecha anime that's similarly cognitive but less, well, NGE, try Eureka7. Though it almost has more mind screw instead of less, it's anchored by a proper honest-to-goodness love story.
