Soul eater was... uhh ok I guess. Not totally my thing. And the ending was kinda meh for me.
I only watched the first 48 episodes of fairytail (cause that's what's on netflix, or it was) but it definitely had a lot of that TRYING HARD IS THE SAME AS WINNING!!!! going on. Also (and in a similar vein to Naruto and anything else like this), they really latch onto a concept and run it into the ground for some reason. Naruto is ninjas, fairytail is wizards, you could exchange the titles they use and mix/match the characters practically
Well... finally finished Nichijou today while returning home after work. These past few days I must have seemed like one of those random "crazy man" because of I would suddenly burst laughing outta nowhere
Damn, how I love animes that just don't give a single flying feth about realism or logic or even common sense.

"Fear is freedom! Subjugation is liberation! Contradiction is truth! These are the truths of this world! Surrender to these truths, you pigs in human clothing!" - Satsuki Kiryuin, Kill la Kill
Anime? Can't think of any. Have you ever read Vinland Saga though? It's pre-medieval and focused on Vikings, but it is very good and the only fantastic elements are the superhuman fighting prowess of a few characters (even historical fiction is bound by the Rule of Cool).
that...that was so damned PRETTY! watching spice and wolf makes me feel pretty on the inside. and i finished both seasons. :( for now I'm going to sleep for a few hours, maybe two or three, than I'll watch samurai champloo some more... maybe. altough it will only suffer after Spice and wolf.
No Naruto because it's over. It finished last week.

looking for more suggestions under the prerequirement of : good characters + medievil setting.
extra points if it involves a very slow burn relationship between protagonists.
Well I just got caught up to the most current episode of Log Horizon season 2.
With the amount of time that has passed and the integration of the People of the Land and the Adventurers I am starting to wonder if and when we will see the first Half people of the land/half adventurer baby to show up. And all the drama and shock that entails.
Sir Isaac Newton may be the deadliest son-of-a-bitch in space, but John von Neumann is the logistics officer that eats your problems and turns them into kit.

Slow burn relationship? Medieval setting?
Inuyasha. Though that's such a slow burn, it's almost breaking enthalpy.
GENERATION 8: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

I can't offer anything in the medieval European vein, but if you're open to something more in the Japanese feel, I'd strongly suggest Moribito.
It's got deliberate pacing and well constructed characters. The setting is subdued low-fantasy and it does solid world building throughout the series. It does have a fair bit of focus on relationships albeit not romantic or flirtatious ones, instead looking a family bonds, duty and social class. It's probably my favorite of all the anime of I've seen.
Check out at least the first 3 episodes, that's enough to let you know if you're on board with it or not.

Ya the closest ones I can think of are all Japanese
Samurai Champloo
Rurouni Kenshin
Sword of the Stranger
(kinda)
Samurai Seven
Claymore
Berserk
Brave 10

Still Vinland Saga.
Or Berserk if for some reason you haven't read it.
I'm not sure if Kabuto's reanimation skill is going to be tedious or amazing. I do know I'm looking forward to seeing more Deidara.
Spoiler:
I do also hope that new 'chakra mode' doesn't completely override sage mode (which was pretty darn cool), as that would put Naruto back into the category of ''only really has one trick'' kind of like Ichigo. Actually I think Inuyasha did that too. They get new tricks as they go but they pretty much forget everything they knew before getting the new skill. (except ichigo doesn't so much do that, boring is boring).

Yeah, his tendency to do that is annoying. Wish he'd kept the blue fox eyes look for more than a single fight, it was cool.
