I'd guess that since Vic's going for a period look it's hard to come up with heavy/special weapons that 'look' right
'period' heavy weapons were definatly not man portable so you'd be looking at carriage mounted (or maybe tripod mounted) heavy weapons which might not suit 40K counts as
or making some sort of man portable version which woulds just look odd (10 barrel man portable Nordenfelt gun anybody)... fine for a Steampunk mini but probably not these

Carriage/tripod works fine for the heavy weapons, that's exactly what the GW models themselves have, after all
Special weapons need a bit more thought, hopefully a design can be found that is subtler than the massive GW efforts but still identifiably flamethrowers, heat rays or what have you.

What's the period though? Looks like the same mid-late 19th Century-to-WW2 - but sci-fi that many of GW's imperial guard use, because as lovely as they are, Vic's range is predominantly not-Imperial Guard based on the various metal ranges that GW released in the mid-1990s. I should point out I don't have a problem with that in any way, but let's call a spade a spade upfront.

So, we're dealing with a period of approximately 100 years of technology, plus not-40k. What might be appropriate? It's not actually very hard.

Flamers are fairly consistent, as are single-man machineguns/stubbers/heavy bolters:

Making Not-Meltas and Not-Plasma Guns just requires the same riffing on the familiar GW designs that Vic has already done with the lasguns, this sort of thing. Power fists are the same.

Heavy weapons on tripods and carriages (crew-served Machineguns/Stubbers/Bolters/Lascannon/Pak-38)

I'm not even going to touch on man-portable Rocket and Missile Launchers.

Vic's guns are already chunkified and pretty clearly based on the IG weapons. She just needs to make something that's appropriate to both 40k and her figures. Which, as we can see above, can pretty much be anything. Man-portable, tripods, carriages. All have a strong foundation in both real world and 40k model history.

This isn't the best place for it but since you posted that Orlock I thought I'd ask.

Does anyone know of a good IG-scale man-portable heavy bolter in plastic?

I know that the Orlock has one, Ox (the Last Chancer who I think got renamed to Sgt. Harker?) but I think those are metal not plastic/resin.

Maybe the scout H. Bolter but that has a scout arm on it as I recall.

Any other ideas?

Sgt. Harker is not Ox; he's bigger, beefier, and has both a mohawk and a shirt. He's one of my favorite models! The smallest plastic heavy bolter I can think of comes on the Space Marine Land Speeder kit, or rather the Ravenwing accessory sprue. The heavy bolters that are meant to be twin-linked are noticeably smaller.

I think a Vickers machine gun based model would work perfectly with most of Vic's range, or even a lewis based model would be cool as wel.

Hi, Thanks for all the great suggestions for special and heavy weapons. I fully intend to do the whole range. The thing that has held me back, to be honest, is that I hate sculpting them, I am much more comfortable and better at sculpting organic shapes than machinery. I really need a CAD sculptor to do a range for me or a traditional sculptor with the skills, but I've been unable to find one. Even some weapons and carriages built from plasticard would work for resin production.
I want to do the heavy weapons similar to the ones in my Praetorian army with the iron wheels, a concept artist to do some designs would be handy too.
I am still just a company of one, so things I don't like sculpting tend to get put off :(
I am about half was through the 'fusion gun'(?) is the drawing below and I hope to have it in the next release.
Cheers,
V

Vic, you should partner up with Anvil Industries. His various special weapons are great and I think he's working on "human-scale" versions of those weapons as opposed to the "Marine-scale" he has currently.

Vic - you could talk to the guys with proven track records like Anvil or the many Polish guys - though with their own small businesses as well they're probably less likely to be willing to do that kind of work for hire, when it could go into their ranges.

I'd actually suggest putting up a brief here, and inviting people to submit either castable masters made from Plasticard, or CAD-renders, again based on actual feasability. Anything physical would need to check with you before mailing it to Adelaide of course. Then when you've got something(s) you like, pay the sculptors a fair amount (whatever the market rate is) for full ownership of the sculpt along with the rights to modify it as you see fit.

There are lots of hobbyists who enjoy CAD design. You can even come up with the concept art if you like and get them to go with it. (I have to admit, I intensely dislike that Melta in the pic above as a practical weapon design). Anyway, I suggest you use the community for this. The worst that can happen is that you don't get anything useful and spend a few hours answering emails and looking at pictures/renders.

You might want to try contacting Mark Mondragon of Dreamforge Games. He's done a lot of work like that for other companies. Although, he may be too busy working on his own model line right now.

Nice fusion cannon pic, I hope the model manages to retain the same feel.

Although part of me thinks it would better represent a plasma weapon - especially the 'Gets Hot' rule for 40K players

Just a cross post here as to what Victoria Miniatures and AdeptiCon have cooked up for 2013.

Beast-Captain Torgo: AdeptiCon 2013 Sci-fi Model

Torgo is one of a line of genetic experiments known as Broolians, the product of an insane experiment by the mad geneticists of the planet Broolia. The so-called Broolian Beastmen first saw service as mercenaries in the service of several stellar empires and have now fought in countless warzones across the Orion-Cygnus Spur.

Beast-Captain Torgo insists on taking the same risks as his beast-brothers, and so is ever to be found at the forefront of the battle. He wields the same flame thrower he as carried since his earliest days of service, unwilling to take up a weapon others might think more suitable to the commander a successful and feared mercenary force. In battle, Torgo is as ferocious and savage as all his kin, eschewing subtlety as soon as the bullets start flying and the charge is called. Few can stand up to such a charge, for the Broolians of Beast-Captain Torgo fight not for wealth, but for the sheer, savage joy that was seeded in their bestial hearts by the insane geneticists of the planet Broolia.

Direct from Victoria Miniatures, Beast-Captain Torgo will be found lurking the swag bags of the first 2000 preregistered attendees with an AdeptiCon 2013 Weekend Badge! Bring a leash!

on the way...

Sorry about the LE status of this mini, believe me, as someone stuck in the back of beyond, I understand. if I can, I will make some available through the web shop. And, he is just a precursor to a Broolian Bestman regiment

Here's a better pic.

I think we all hope that Vic produces a full line of Broolian Beastmen and I’ll be first in line!

Not that I have been bugging Vic, to do one or anything ... : )

Well apart from attending AdeptiCon, or Ebay. One could post and see if one of these couple hundred Dakka folks that attend AdeptiCon would pick one up for you at the AdeptiCon registration desk. We always have extra of the AdeptiCon Miniatures available for those that want to pick up multiples.

Brilliant Figure! The flamer design is nice also.

The reference to "broo" (runequest?) is a wonderful nod to vintage gaming and something vets will really appreciate.

Until now EM4 Phagon Beastmen were the only currently available space beastmen figures, and they are pretty dated.

Please feel free to PM I will return the favour if you want a FW Event model as I go every year in March/April

i take it that flamer is indication of Vic releasing some more special weapon type arms

The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal.
