I'm not one to criticize artwork, as I can't draw for gak; however, that is the derpiest face I've ever seen on the cover of a BL book. That's the first blow up of this picture I've seen and I can't believe how bad it is. Ugh...

New website only audio drama is up:

"As the renegade forces of the Warmaster storm across the galaxy, a very different kind of war rages in the shadows of the Imperium – the Knights Errant, chosen of Malcador himself, move quietly in the dark places where others cannot. Battle-captain Nathaniel Garro makes his way to the Imperial Fists’ mighty starfort Phalanx, seeking out another kindred soul for his elite band of warriors."

By website only, they mean, "sucker you into buying half an audio cd, so you then need spend a load of money again to buy the complete with extras."

I fell for that with Blood Spire, not falling for it again.

I'm confused. Is this Burden of Duty like the 3rd Garro audio drama? I thought that was going to be Garro: Sword of Truth.

Just finished The Great Betrayal, by Nick Kyme.

Dwarves being my first army I've ever collected, this story had always captured my imagination. And I'm happy to see it get the Time of Legends treatment.

Nick did a good job portraying each race at their best and worst, leading up to full out war. Although there is quite a contrast between the Elf and Dwarf king, that does litttle to garner sympathy for the Elves, if you are a fan of them. A Druchii character will be familiar to The Sundering and Nagash series fans out there, which I appreciated. And enjoyable read for those that like Dwarves, or fantasy in general.

Spoiler:
There were notable references to Stone Golems, air ships and a Dwarf Runelord, in a brief skirmish, seemed to speak "Skyrim-esque" words of power that held its own against an aforementioned familiar Dark Elf sorceress. Wonder if those are hints at what is to come in the new Dwarf armybook that is rumored to be on its way. Monstrous infantry, a big warmachine kit and -gasp- Dwarf magical casting of some sort. I only say that because Nicks "Fall of Damnos" hinted at some new Necron fluff that was validated by the codex. We'll see, I guess.

Finally finished Fear To Tread and I have to say I didn't really care for it. Admittedly, I'm in a particularly pessimistic place regarding 40K these days and I've never really been a fan of James Swallow's writing style it seems, but I didn't think it particularly noteworthy.

I really liked the portrayal of Horus, but found I couldn't really like any of the Blood Angels (particularly those Sanguinary Guard - why does a Sanguinius need a personal guard at all please don't bypass the swear filter like this , it's there for good reason. Reds8n times, even against his own Legion?), Sanguinius included, and the Chief Daemons I found pretty tedious.

Wasn't really a fan of how Sanguinius' near-death was handled either and I found the action dull or confusing.

Spoiler:
How was it he got out of the coma? Just willpower? The casket-thing hadn't been destroyed yet and Kano seemed to fail, so...?

Maybe this is just me being cynical, however. Going to read Shadows of Treachery (skipping straight to Prince of Crows like I imagine many are) now, see if that picks me up

Also, anyone else get the reference for Kyriss being this image:

I rather enjoyed Fear to Tread but there is a temptation to be very forgiving because the epilogue was so good. There was and remains a problem with the Blood Angels and the Horus Heresy in that of all the stories we know, we know most about the Blood Angels and Sanguinius. This means there is very little new to write and a lot of it is set in stone. I've seen a few people remark about the demon characters but I didn't find them that bad. Admittedly I wasn't expecting much. In my mind Chaos Demons are an extreme expression of one type of behaviour and Khorne and Slannesh are the most basic of the four. To take the ideas of pleasure and violence and then concentrate them and magnify them within a Greater Deamon isn't going to result in something that needs to scheme it's way around a problem. Especially Khorne. I could go on but as I said they are very simple emotions that don't create the most interesting of characters. They are like Angron in that respect. As a character himself Angron is pretty one dimensional, but the situation others have to deal with is what make stories about him interesting. I tend to get the new books on audio and this is the first one that I have found to be sub par. This is solely because of the way the reader does Sanguinius' voice. The rest of the voice acting and reading is fine but the overly effeminate/chiorboy voice is terrible. Angles don't sound like prepubescent boys, they are supposed to put the fear of God into you and in this reading Sanguinius doesn't.

Sadly I don't see things getting much better for Sanguinius his story is so well known that there is little room to maneuver and with the Horus Heresy series it's the stuff we don't know that is the most fun.

I'd have to agree, I really enjoyed the portrayal of the guileful demon in Fulgrim to the more 1 dimensional demons when they are associated with a single Chaos power. Also most of the demons tend to act like they are all about khorne regardless of the Chaos Power they actually serve. All about the killing.

I'm giving Fear to Tread another read through now, started again last night. I did enjoy it but I remember feeling a bit let down by it all. It suffers from lack of awesomeness I think, which is an issue with the heresy series. Not down to the writer, as I think Mr Swallow's Heresy works have been consistently some of the best, but because of us gluttons who have dreamed of Heresy works over the years. It's hard to live up to expectations, which is why I think I have preferred the stories in the Visions books. They gave us a hint of what was happening, just enough to keep us happy without going too far to disappoint.

That's my Kyriss, there were a few other images of him in the Visions books, one where he was slaying Blood Angels.

Spoiler:
That part in the book left me thinking, did he actual manage to kill anything?

Also on Ka'bandha

Spoiler:
Did anyone else feel that for one of Khornes greatest Champions that sucker punch was pretty low, even for a Daemon, and he wasn't much cop? Much like Ang'grath in Aurelian.

It's kind of confusing. Both are Garro stories, but Sword of Truth's audio doesn't mention it's a Garro story, but sees it as a Horus Heresy story (and yes, even though it takes place during the heresy there is a small difference). Burden of Duty however is mentioned as a Garro story.

Just now wrapped up Shadows of Treachery. It was okay really. To me personally five of the stories were a retread as I already own those in one format or the other. The Crimson Fists story was spoiled for me (thanks for that) and the AD-B story was okay. It wasn't exactly a popper, though I'm sure some people will love to debate a certain event in it to death as being stupid and impossible. I found it amusing myself. Hilarious if I were to use a word Sev uses a lot.
