Out of curiosity have any of the HH books made it to any bestseller lists since they went hardback? There was a while there where the series had gotten so big pretty much everything ended up on the NY times one but since then all I have really heard is 'meh, uninterested in hardback'.

FIFTY books to tell the complete (for now) Horus Heresy story?
Youch!
I mean, we all knew they'd milk it, but I didn't think FIFTY was the number!
I can't wait to read The Scourging series after the HH series too...of course, BL's new policies will make sure that I am waiting though!

I queried this myself and, apparently, hardcovers aren't offered up/don't count towards this list.
... which seemed fishy to me given how I seem to recall Harry Potter and similar doing alright, but in this instance, as Mr. Goulding is essentially a good chap I'm willing to bow to his actual knowledge in this regards rather than assume some massive conspiracy/misinformation etc etc.
Will be interesting to see if the MMPB/ones we're used to make the list as/when.
In their defence we're are suffering here somewhat more from issues/fashion in the booktrade rather than BL deliberately trying to stiff us.
.. T'would seem the future is probably digital ?!
But I know exactly what you mean about the lessening of excitement and interest in the series, which is not something I thought I'd have said this time last year.
It was cool as ever to hear about some of the future releases and plot ideas -- especially Mr. Abnett's forthcoming one with 5 primarchs fighting, marines from 8 legions interacting -- including Space Wolves and The Lion ! -- and then you recall I won't read the book for a good 6 months or so , which puts it next year and.. well... meh. Might as well wait and pick it up cheap 2nd hand or just read the summary.
YMMV of course.

I really enjoyed the series as a whole, probably will pick it back up once the paperbacks start coming out again. While I don't care for hardback size, I just can't justify price. Just became the stay at home dad, and the pay cut that came. With it crunches an already small gaming budget. It also doesn't help that I read the forums every day and get the gist of the story before ill get the book.

Yup, the Black Library section of my bookstore around here has dwindled to only a shelf. Back a year ago it'd take up half a bookcase and constantly had new books each month. Now the most recent thing there is Siege of Castellax I believe. It's amazing how much things have changed over the course of a year.

Uniformity is a problem with almost all large, long running series.
I can't think of many of the scifi/fantasy/crime series I buy that have kept to a format/cover style that matches over the years
(and many that have 'reprinted' in the new cool style meaning some will feel the have to buy the lot again)
It's a fact of the publishing industry (however those teeny tiny stories being released as standf alone premium products, that IS a BL cash grab)

IIRC there was a line from Black Library at one point that the hardbacks offered a chance to get the stories earlier, but that it wouldn't delay the normal paperbacks. Ha!

Has anyone else heard that there was some industry pressure for BL to go hardback first with their releases?
I'm struggling to understand the logic behind it otherwise. I mean.. I was really into the Heresy.. I spent years making a pre-heresy army (before the models came along, so you had to convert everything) - so many hours spent discussing the Crusades and Heresy on specialist forums - but I have to be honest I think the wind has left the sales a bit to the point where releases are coming and passing me by without me really realising.
And this is from someone who was a hardcore fan.. I can see if someone was somewhat more casual about buying the series, you would have to think . The kind of guy who pops into GW or Waterstones once a month (who has no other attachment to the hobby) to look for the latest paperback on the shelf, and then sees only a hardback (or perhaps nothing, when its something you have to order online) might try 2 or 3 times, and if there is nothing new in that time, will most likely forget about the whole thing.

Certainly doesn't help that they are gaking out more and more books in hardback first, with a softback a year later, which while cute then, is getting rather annoying nowadays.

I don't get the hardback debate. Unless it's a special limited print run I only buy ebooks for regular 40k and Fantasy fiction these days. I only buy the Heresy books as audiobooks as I prefer to listen whilst painting or gaming. The only industry pressure I could imagine would be from bookshops who want to carry a hardback which might have a better margin (i don't know if there is a higher markup for hardbacks). But that doesn't make sense because only GW are carrying them.
Regarding the current state of the Heresy series, I think it's the big events people get excited for but that said Know no Fear and Fear to Tread were both about classic plot points of the Heresy but for me they weren't quite as exciting as they could have been. I think it might be the case that BL and FW need to take a breather and service their other commitments because otherwise they'd fail to get the buy in from new players of 40k and WH Fantasy. I also have a suspicion that they may have been told to leave off the HH for a bit because it was threatening to eclipse the regular lines. I have bought hardly any 40k models since 6th came out but I have been buying HH models.

The whole hardback/trade/mass market paperback issue has really got my back up. I've been collecting Black Library novels since before they were the Black LIbrary (Deathwing in 1993 I believe), but how is my loyalty to the brand repaid? LImited edition hardback 'premium' novellas, proper sized paperbacks issued months after the initial hardback, e-books and audio dramas that seem to take years to make it onto the printed page.
There was no-one happier than me when the first Horus Heresy novel came out, in one format and one format only, but now my intelligence is being insulted when BL tell us that our loyalty is being rewarded by being able to but new HH novels in hardback only, having to wait nine months (!) for it to be re-published in the only format that was available to us for seven years.
It's greed, pure and simple, so don't pretend that it is anything else, because it isn't. After seven years GW had realised that it's got people hooked on a nice little earner, so let's fleece them for all that we can. I used to really look forward to the next HH release, but now I know I have a nine month wait before i get the MMPB version to sit beside the rest of the collection on my bookshelf.
As for e-books, why the huge wait for a paper copy? It's already been written, so how difficult is it to get it to the printers?
Oh, and why have such a useless 'blog' on your website BL? How about letting on about publication dates, formats, etc, instead of censoring posts on your Facebook page? SOme of us can't or won't devote an entire day to sitting in seminars listening to authors and editors pontificating...
If I didn't enjoy reading W40K novels so much, and wasn't so completist in my approach to collecting them, I would have given them up by now. As it is, my enthusiasm for them had ebbed a great deal, knowing I've either got to wait months, but larger books with print seemingly intended for the partially-sighted, of give in and start to but e-books, something I'm not very keen to do. I work on a computer all day, the last thing I want to do is read a book on a screen...
Rant over.

I've also had some real spoiler issues due to the Hardback policy. The very forums I could use to discuss their novels now spoil the ones I've as yet not purchased; I know a lot of key stuff from AE and Betrayer and reading it in some forum post really isn't the same as reading it in a novel.
And that's not to mention all the stuff I'm missing out on from Audio or LE-novella exclusive releases.
Does the hardback policy also apply to non- HH stuff, like the Space Marine Battle novels?
I'm planning to send BL a shemail to express my dissatisfaction. I'll post it on here so y'all can copy it, use it as a template, inspiration, or whatever, should you choose to do the same.
