It's a tough choice... I may well buy the other set of veterans as they're such nice models... Just voicing my thoughts I was at work all day, so if I get enough uni work done tomorrow I'll reward myself with starting on my apothecary xxx

somehow i cant picture a beaky marine for ultras so do him as an imperial fist...much better suited that look for these!

Hello all...

Today, I've been trying out various yellows for my Imperial Fist veteran. This poor dude is a random terminator I had lying around, he's donated his body to science

It all looks terrible, but I'm thinking that the colour on the backpack might be ok when it's done all over... It doesn't look that mustard in real life I'd like to add lol. xxx

omg bubble hai! Wow you really jumped the gun here, I personaly think yellow is the hardest thing to paint good, I can say however I have seen alot of imperial fists worse then this, and yours isnt even finished! (if that helps)

I would have agreed with you, except I tried one on white and it was just tooooooo yellow, like childish yellow lol. I'll do one of each maybe and see what works better xxx

to paint yellow from a white basecoat, use bestial brown > Snakebite leather > sunburst yellow > Skull white.

or whatever stupid names they are called now.

take your time, and highlight as you would normally.

Sorry But I'll agree to disagree on this one, because when you use the final colour as a primer, you get a colour which is unnatural and looks false. at lease when you start from scratch and build up the paints gradually you can see the effort put into the model. Its why I don't like airbrushes, the only time I'd condone an airbrush is for tanks. anything else is taking the easy option imo. I don't expect people to agree with my way of doing things, but you can tell the difference between what i consider the lazy way, and the proper way.

Do you use washes on your models childe? Then your cheating, why not paint all the shades by hand I understand where your coming from, and I for one dont use colored primers because as you said I dont like the result, but airbrushes I think take a degree of skill and in the end, can make amazing minis

Washes are different, and an effect you cannot gain any other way. a wash used properly can be used as a glaize or to add texture to a model... your having an argument with the wrong person. Remember I did a degree in art where the foundation was both colour theory as well as practical application

OK Mr degree when I was drawing and painting a picture in art once my art teacher told me I was doing it wrong, to this I replied surly art is how the artist perceives it.

Art is how you perceive it. but, the tools and medium is always the same. a rock is a rock, and paint is paint. not matter what you do with those items, they will always be either a rock or paint.

paint will always behave in the same way. it will always matter how you use it as it behaves exactly the same way all the time. so when you shade with it, it will always shade in the same way. if you highlight with it, it will always highlight in the same way. the only thing that changes is the person holding the brush

when you know your materials you will then be able to do anything with it.

Yes, but to be fair people are learning new ways to use and manipulate paints and materials every day, so if people want to use a " simple/lazy" way thats cool with me.

However I do agree with your point on the colour basing, using varying colour shades to build up to the final colour does work best.

I tried that with my inperial fists and its actually easier with a black undercoat.
Also comes out a ton better IMO.

white makes all the colours crisper, but if you use black it causes you to use more layers which in the end begins to lose detail if you arent careful.

I recently started working on some Imperial Fists myself, I've been having a modicum of success layering yellow over a white undercoat then using washes to tie everything together.

It won't win any Golden Demons but it does a job.
