I've had that problem. If she keeps saying "you don't have to" just drive the point home that it's a matter of you wanting to. If you already know what she wants, just surprise her with the gift.

I had something like that. I grabbed 1 of the year below who were there by complusary timetable, and wasn't doing nothing. After about 10 reps at 66kg (the weight of my sparing partner in my judo class) my bad knee buckled and I ended up trapped in a crouch. The bugger just stood there asking what to do. Eventually some friends helps me up
