I have finished painting all my Van Saars but unfortunately my camera has broken (guess it didn't like being talked about) so I can't post the group shots just yet.

Question: does anyone have any good suggestions for sourcing bare arms suitable for a female miniature? I currently use dark eldar wych arms but they are perhaps a bit beefy and the variety is a bit limited. I have heard maybe some warhammer ancients are well suited? Plastic zulus or greeks or something?

Wood elves are all pretty well clothed though right? Or are there some bare arms somewhere? I spent a while browsing some wargame foundry plastics but I think I will play it safe with dark eldar arms for now.

Just saw that building Bruticus... glad that it didn't end up as a fighting pit or you would have easily won the contest!

Geez... the textures are amazing... the paint chipping on those metal walls, how do you get such deep chips in there if you don't mind my asking?

and the graffiti is awesome.

The chips on the beige coloured walls are done with sponging on dark grey, and then highlighting the bottom edge of each grey blob with a very light colour, near white. It's really time consuming and if you do it badly it looks terrible and ruins the effect of the random paint blobs, so I didn't do it everywhere. Also most of the building has some light texture put on it first using rustoleum spray paint, gives it a bit more depth as well.

Rustoleum, hmm.

Yeah I think it's beige (many colors in fact), it's the long wall with all the metal grates and a few posters and the 'boats' graffiti.

I was like did he highlight those by hand? or is there some secret method I don't know about, but yes in fact you did! Looks hardcore.

Yeah I really love Rust-Oleum, specifically the Aged Iron one. It's a pretty thick spray that will obscure detail but it adds texture to otherwise flat plastic parts and you can use it quite sparingly for just a bit of texture, or heavily to give a well worn/corroded look. The central column part under the walkway was sprayed quite heavily and it looks like old wrought iron which is pretty cool considering it was a bit of quite rubbery plastic pipe originally. Anyway it's my favourite scenery making tip, especially good for extremely old/corroded parts. You have to paint over it though as it is a bit too bright a metal colour otherwise

I highlighted most of them by hand on that wall, for an even more extreme effect you can add a shadow to the top of each chip with black, but I think you run the risk of losing the natural look of the sponge method.

The graffiti says Boris by the way, I just suck at graffiti, he was my old Goliath leader who has recently returned as a bounty hunter.

That board, sir, is ridiculawesome.

I'd play Necromunda again too if that was what we were using, lol.

A couple of pics of my finished Van Saar gang:

These are quite large pics but you have to zoom in on the gallery to view them. A fullscreen/lightbox mod for the forum would be great.

I might get some closeups/individual shots when I can figure out a good camera set up. I'm pretty happy with them overall, the colours look very striking against the dirty industrial backdrop of Necromunda.

any luck finding those arms you need ?

I'm going to go with Dark Eldar arms I think, I have a few other ideas as well. I'll have to see how well the bits go together.

Nice gang dude! I wonder why you don't have a lascannon heavy on team ....

Van Saar can strat with it, they can START!

More seriously I also think dark eldar is your best option. Keep up the good work!

I think lascannons are just too excessive in Necromunda. Even a missile launcher is a bit over the top - a single str8 shot with a krak missile is not going to be as useful as a heavy bolter can do with up to 6 str5 shots. Normally I would kit out a gang with a flamer and heavy stubber I think, both cheap and powerful - it's what my Goliaths used. But I wanted to use some guns I hadn't used much with my Van Saars.

So far my missile launcher has achieved feth all, rarely hitting or having a good LOS. The meltagun has not been very useful either - too hard to hit with. Luckily my leader has carried the gang by being a total hero.

Totally agreed, it was sarcasm

Never tryed missile launcher. I usually go with heavy plasma (template) or autocannon (longrange) when I want to get out of the classic stubber or heavybolter.

Guess I'll give it a try!

The autocannon was the beast of Necromunda. I had one in my Van Saar gang at some point. Str 8, D6 wounds... lol. Rarely had the opportunity hit more than one or two guys at any given time unless your opponent was stupid anyway. But that guy that did get hit?

I used to run my van Saars with two heavy stubbers for overwatch, and every ganger as plasma-equiped as their techno skill would allow. It gets you off at a slow start, but boy, they became scary REAL quick! Only exception was my starting juve turned power-sword hand-flamer ganger... very a-typical, but he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with guns... So he focussed on hand to hand... racked a total of 9 true kills (death results after the game) before the rival delaques put a price on his head and an ambitious goliath gang came after him... He took three of the punks with him before being captured and sold into slavery.

In Necromunda, the cheap weapons are actually the weapons to go with... its nice, an autocannon, but not its money's worth. Same for heavy plasma and missile launcher. Only thing i never saved money on was bolters... I love bolters...

Eh...

Agreed, you get more bang for your buck with a heavy stubber, or maybe later on a heavy bolter. An autocannon is the best of the heaviest weapons but it's still rarely going to beat a heavy bolter, not like you come across many opponents with a T7 or something.

I play with some modified skill charts (from Anthony Case's site) that don't have the Specialist skill, it was a bit overpowered anyway.

True... Same here too... we use different charts, more weaponry, different setting. Come to think of it, only the necromunda principle remains really... the rest is house rules

That Van Saar gang is so frickin cool! Any chance to get those close ups ASAP, or maybe even these big pics in email?

I've been looking at your scenery again, and starting to feel less pleased about mine... I need to add some life, and volume to what I've been working on.

Great stuff sir!

Thanks but the truth is they were painted pretty quickly and really look best as a group on the tabletop rather than up too close! I do intend to photograph all my models properly at some point when I can get a better camera than a phone. In the meanwhile the higher res images are here:

Spoiler:

Or at least, the same res as the Dakka gallery but visible all at once. I think an option to embed images at full size in posts/as a lightbox would be pretty useful, being able to zoom around on the gallery image is not the same.

Coming next is my 'shrubbery' for the scenery competition and my first forays into =][= with a radical Ordo Xenos Inquisitor and some of his warband.

You never can be too sure.

Though I was always curious how, when the guy ended up taking 8 wounds, how he only ended up suffering a hand injury. Maybe that was the only piece they couldn't find and a rat carried it off. Health care in the Necromunda hive is amazing.
