Ok so after selling my guard for a tidy amount and having that new army itch I have decided to give the tyranids a go. I have become increasingly frustrated as every army I seem to play is declared as being overpowered by the majority my local gaming group, tyranids have a reputation for being underwhelming that combined with the new models made the descision easy.
First things first here is the majority of stuff I have to build and paint.
and to paint them
Missing from the picture (as they are already built and awaiting paint) are 3 biovores, 24 termagants, 15 or so spores and another tervigon.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Hey all
First model done, tried out a bunch of similar schemes but none of them 'gelled' quite right, or had the ease of painting required for an army. So here is the colours of Hive Fleet Grendel
Up next 19 or so more termies (half way through painting) and some Biovores (applying scheme to a bigger model). Automatically Appended Next Post: Long time no update, got distracted by various other projects (BB, SoTR, Uncharted Seas, ACTA: Star Fleet, etc) but here are the first 20 termegants finished
Up next Biovores! Automatically Appended Next Post: Long time with no update I've been distracted painting other things (mainly blood bowl teams) but with the advent of 6th edition it's time to get back in the saddle so to speak.Ok so I'm happy with how the scheme works on small models I now needed to try it out on medium and large models here are the results (with some minor purity seal 'frosting' which is more than slightly annoying).
Spore mines
Biovores
and Tervigon
All in all test complete and satisfied with paint scheme. Automatically Appended Next Post: Update - Here is the result of the last 2 days painting test scheme for gargoyles and the big bad himself the Swarmlord!
(messed around with deliberatly left brush strokes and thin layer of wash to try and get a membrane look for the wings)
Dithered a bit with how to do the sabres- was going to do claw colour with green lightning but eventually decided on a bone effect as I thought the lightning thing would make the model too 'busy'.

I absolutely love your paint scheme, in fact so much I think I want to copy it!!
Could you please tell me how you've painted the various parts? It would be very helpful.
Also what is the name of those egg things? I can't quite make it out.

Scheme is fairly simple so here goes from white primer.
Skin
Heavy Biel-tan wash
Ustabi bone layer leaving recess showing (thinned for areas like wing membranes)
Fleshy bits (tervigon sack, wings etc)
as skin but finish with druchii violet wash (for the wings I went back and removed the excess with a dry brush and kept direction)
Carapace
Caliban Green basecoat
Progressive layers of highlight (larger amounts with first colour) Kabalite Green, Warboss Green, Moot Green.
Claws/weapons
Basecoat Stegadon Green
Highlight Russ Grey
Eyes- Averland sunset
Teeth - Palid Wychflesh
Tounge - crimson wash (can't remember name) over white primer
Base - Mournfang Brown with tyrant skull drybrush and dead grass.
Think that covers it!
The eggs are Mega-bloks Plasma Hatchers.
Thanks for the comments.

Another week another update
Painted a Ravener
Finished another 8 gargoyles bringing the brood up to 10
and Lastly a simple Parasite of Mortex conversion (a little top heavy even with greenstuff packed in base)
Not hating painting them but have to stop putting it off and paint a butt load more termagants now.

One model to add this update the Tyrannofex, bought this model with every intention of using him with the rupture cannon as a backfield firepower support but with changes to how things work in 6th I decided instead to build him with the acid spray for a more of a walking support role.
Cheers for now

I really like your paint scheme.
You seem to be painting your models with extraordinary speed! Is this because the scheme is simple or you're just adept at painting hordes?

No real story as yet (and to be fair I'm not that good at fluff bar coming up with a name for them)

A bit of both, I have a rule where I won't play with a model till it's painted this has lead to me being a reasonably fast painter and coming up with schemes that are quick to do (scheme is a couple of posts up) . Oh and I have a job where I can paint on night shifts which gives me some good quality painting time.

Quick update - Zoanthropes!
With 6th giving psykers a new breath of life I wanted some of these beasties in my army both for thier powers and to add to the amount of shadows in the warp on the field. Unfortunately this meant dealing with finecast (those with a love of GW should gloss over the next bit and look at the pretty pictures), F$%^&&G bag of S&*£e washed it (don't believe the hype this stuff is usually covered in paint repellant mould release), re-based on rocks (out of 4, 3 had stress fractures at the part that joins to the base), pinned parts together (warping and random flash means very little chance of a part which remotely fits without a lot of work) and filled gaps with liquid greenstuff. Primed then painted and found that my washing hadn't been as thorough as I thought as areas just wouldn't take paint, The texture of Finecast is also random and it is just horrible to paint I'd hate to try to do anything other than a basic paintjob on it (the surface is just so inconsistent even across one model).
Rant over time for pics!
cheers!

Awesome looking models!
Just curious, have the new GW washes/shades ever glossed over when they dry? I seem to have the problem with Agrax Earthshade.
Keep the updates coming!!

As I mentioned in an earlier post I have a thing where I won't play with it till it's painted, I'm getting close but still have to paint at least 10 more gargoyles, another tervigon, a tyrant guard and 60 or so termegants. Should get this done in a month or so depending on time I get.

I haven't noticed any glossing but did have one occasion where I hadn't shook the shade for long enough and it left milky white spots when it dried (that was agrax earthshade come to think of it).

Another nightshift another update Warriors come out to play!
Bought these cheap pre built and thin paint so only had to base them and respray them before painting this led to a slight loss of detail but overall they came out ok.
Cheers! tonight I attempt to knuckle down and paint more termegants.

Wow that's a lot of 'nids. The scheme looks nice, I like those two shades of green you have going on there. You seem to be churning out more 'nids than the manufactorums on Mars churn out the Imperium's gear. Great work, I am rather fond of it. Always liked the 'nids, got the Space Hulk ones under my bed somewhere, might be time to get them out and start painting.

Biovores are awesome for many reasons but the biggest is barrage sniping you can use them to remove threats to your other units from the crowds like plasma, melta etc. When you combine with other abilities like enfeeble you have a unit that can decimate multi wound models. All this at a bargain basement price.
The Tyrannofex is a big roadblock a 2+ T6 nasty that draws fire but is still hard to put down (even more so if you cast endurance on it) the acid spray isn't a bad weapon and comes in handy for rooting out opponents from cover.
Dakkafex and Dakkatyrant are just naughty 12 TL Str6 shoots each with Old adversary giving a reroll ones to wound and penetrate makes them great at anti-infantry and light vehicle killing whilst losing pratically nothing in CC if they need to.
