I find it very interesting that I started out thinking that this whole thing was total gak that you could maybe use to rip on your friends in high school, and after the comments here, I've started to think that maybe there's something to this.

I took a lot of pictures with chicks females in skimpy artistic out-fits at GenCons in the past. If they didn't put there arms around me, then I wouldn't put my arms around them. I did hover hands a couple of times, but I was married at the time and knew my (now) ex would see the pictures.

People might hover hands for a number of reasons.

* Sweaty hands. That's just polite.
* At conventions, the girl might have on body paint you don't want to smear.
* Not-sure-if-18 syndrome.

Interesting, something else Ive never heard of... but anyway, I've just googled it and had a good read.. it seems perfectly rational.

If you aren't very confident, you might think the chick is going to get super pissed if you put your hand on her, I noticed from some of the photos, the really ugly fat dudes are visibly and purposely not touching their skin, even when the chicks are being super polite and have their hands all over them like this one for example!



Its simply down to confidence, Id happily put my grubby, hairy palms all over her, and she is nice enough to touch the fat sweaty dude.. but you can kinda tell by looking at him he is thinking "Best be polite, she might get pissed"

So, its not a foolproof virginity test, but I can see the logic, if someone is really lacking in confidence they are more likely to have never had a girlfriend, they won't want to touch them for fear of embarrassment if the chick goes "eew get your hands off me!"

Unlikely at a con, but if you are ugly (and lets be honest, humans know if we are ugly or not.. you can only get shot down in flames so many times before you get demoralised) you might have the willies needlessly, maybe the last ten times you asked a chick out she told you to feth off.. so, well, gak gets worse in your head.

Those are perfectly good explanations. I also agree with Mattyrm on the confidence thing.

Yeah. Confidence is probably why for most of it.

Actually that's not usually true, most people think they're above average in looks even if most people think they're ugly. Also is that Gabe Newell (co-founder and managing director of Valve)?

Except most of the time this isn't at conventions.

Also, not-sure-if-18 syndrome is pretty much as virgin exclusive as hover handing. Very few people actually care about it that much; very few people are going to look at underage girls in that way, but also very few people are going to be caring about whether the girl is 18, which is a legal and not a moral guideline. 18 and 40 is going to likely be a lot more exploitive than 17 and 20. Not-sure-if-18 syndrome also seems to be a rationalization in most cases for not talking to girls. The loser doesn't want to put himself out there and so he says it's because the girl is too young.

I'm mid 30s and am not romantically interested in 18 year olds. I have no reservations in actually asking a lady I'm interested in if she wants to touch my wiener. I do have reservations about putting my arms around a not-sure-if-18 stranger.

If one were interested in girls around that age, I suppose age could be a concern, but not even being able to make contact seems a little extreme.

I would think that at almost four months later, a PM would have sufficed to whoever you were replying to.
