Stick tape on their heads, leave them to run around in circles backwards as you work.
But as a person who is mad about his kitty, I'd actually say let it onto your lap and let it sleep while you work. But I'm really bias

I carry them one by one into the spare room and shut them in it. However, I then dump some crunchy treats on the floor so they will not be too upset.

A dog works too. My cat get's a little too comfortable, and my Labmix jumps right in the middle of her Zen.

I have a cat. And he pretty much knows what happens when he jumps up on my modelling table. Of course it helps when you can train them from a very young age.
|
Life is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless and perfunctory gift nobody ever asked for. Unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So you're stuck with this undefinable whipped mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down because there's nothing left to drink. Sure once in a while there's a peanut butter cup or a English toffee, but they're gone too fast and the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits of hardened jelly and teeth shattering nuts. If you're desperate enough to eat those all you've got left is a. An empty box, filled with useless brown paper wrappers. |

I'd let them sleep on my lap but they push me away from the table and they don't actually stay still. They sort of do a circuit of 'desk-lap-window-lap-desk-repeat'
I tried shutting them in the bathroom but I'd hate to leave them their too long. Sometimes I can get caught up in my work and lose track of time. But its probably the best way to go.
Trying to oversaturate them with massive amounts of cuddling doesn't work. They just want more. haha

I just make sure there's something higher than my modelling table that kitty can watch from; it stops him getting painted/stealing models/making green stuff furry and I don't have to worry about him stealing models :p

I tell my cat no, twice. The first time he usually doesn't listen. I guess he thinks I'm kidding. The second time though, he knows I mean business! He's generally content enough to just sit in my lap. As long as he feels important, he's happy.

Citrus. Cats hate citrus. Lemon or orange in particular. It's quite effective. If a cat coming in your area, take a fresh rind and squeeze it in their face. The oils released spray a very light mist and the cat will scram. Be carefully not to get it in your paint. Leave a few fresh rinds around a permiter and it will help keep them at bay.

They eventually get worn out and go to sleep. The secret is being more patient than the cat, which is not very difficult.

Put a door on your modelling room with a doorknob (not a lever handle). Cat's can figure out the latter, but can't use a doorknob without an opposable thumb.
As for outwaiting a cat ...
I housesat for friends with two cats.
They had bi-fold bedroom doors that opened inwards - and when the cats wanted in, they just jumped at the doors until they opened (said friends were stupid and never considered bolts on the doors to stop them folding up).
I just sat my bag on the inside of the doors, preventing them from opening. Middle of the night, I hear a pair of thumps. Then a while later, a couple more. Then nothing. When I got up, cats were asleep on the couch.

So true - cats are truely more intelligent than people.
Human: wake up, commute to work, slog through the day, commute home, do the chores, go to sleep.
Cat: wake up, get fed, have a nap on the sofa, eat some biscuits, do some sunbathing, get fed, get stroked, have a nap on the sofa.
Really, I think they've won the game of life.

I've got a studio apartment. There aren't really any rooms other than the main living space and the bathroom (which I guess I'll have to put them in while I work).
Haha. I can imagine balls of fur banging against the bi-fold doors.

I love my sister's cat, but apparently he loves me more and is an attention hog. Pretty much my way to keep him off me: two hands and strong arms. After a few good launches (usually onto a soft place since I am not my father and don't launch the cat into the wall), he usually takes the hint and bothers one of the dogs or something....
