Black in general relies on not actually being black, but instead it would be a very dark shade of gray. That way you can still shade it down to true black and highlight with lighter shades of gray.

Weathered black would be even more gray in my opinion since it would have had some fading.

The actual shading would be the same as any other color. Lighter on top where the light hits it and then graduating to black at the bottom.

I have honestly done zero painting with the new paints. With the old paints I used the standard black and the Adeptus Battlegrey as my two paints. I used a wet palate and mixed on that. Have you done blending on a model before or would this be your first time?

By the old paints, the 'simplest' and laziest method would simply be undercoat black, then go up from the darkest shades of grey, up to the medium shades.

Probably the best way would be to start black, then do say, 4 parts black to 1 part white ( or maybe oven 9 to 1), then after than go 1 more part white, until it'sa 50/50 mix / you're happy with it.

Instead of dark shades of grey I prefer shades of blue.

I prefer to use a basecoat of half-n-half Chaos Black/Regal Blue.
Then add a tiny bit of Fortress Grey to the mix and highlight.
Then a pure Fortress Grey extreme edge-highlight.
Finish off with two separate washes of Badab Black, letting the first coat dry before applying the second.

PS. You have to translate the colours to the new names yourself. There is a good comparison chart in the Articles sections, under Painting I believe.

Theres many different ways my favorite is taking the blackest black you can find and add in the slightest bit of grey just a tiny drop. After doing so add some more grey and apply a medium dry brush. For the final step add slightly more gray and dry brush once again very lightly. Cheers on the skaven.

For cloth, I always preferred to mix Bleached Bone into the Chaos Black. For successive layers, just increase the ration of Bone to Black. You're on your own with the new names.

Blue I think gives more of a clean black rather than a weathered black. I use blue when I want something to look like a pure black rather than a faded black like highlighting with grey gives.

My advice on painting black would be make sure you use nice and dark colours. I don't think GW make any "out of the pot" greys that are dark enough to use for all but the final highlights, you'll have to mix them up yourself. I'd say use a reasonably pure looking grey if you want a faded sort of look (a lot of greys are actually bluish greys, go for more of a pure grey if you want a faded/weathered look).

Also consider doing highlights with feathering rather than trying to smoothly blend them to give a rougher finish that might (or might not, it's up to you) give you more of a rough and ready look. Depends what you're picturing in your mind.

you can use dry pigments powders to color and weather black cloth... you can build it up by drybrushing the pigment onto a black undercoat or the other way around, have a grey or brown undercoat and drybrush black pigments in the shaded area's

The new line has a shade called "Eshin Grey" that's darker than Codex Grey or whatever replaced it .

For a nice, warm black cloth, highlight by adding dwarf flesh. I kid you not, it's the shiznitz.

Personally I'd recommend skavenblight dinge, it makes a superb highlight for black if you want a slightly warm tone.

Did you know? The Reach belongs to the Forsworn.

I wouldn't go for warm tones if I am trying to show old and weathered cloth. I would shoot for bleached out and desaturated with just a touch of dirty.
