So I should start by letting y'all know I know absolutely NOTHING of WHFB regarding how it plays, how to play it, what is good, and what is needed. That said, I have a few questions so I can figure out if it's something I want to get into.

I'm really interested in the idea of making a Revolutionary War-themed army (USA) and was wondering the viability of an Empire list with certain criteria:

-Cannons, Handgunners, Militia, and Outriders only (Plus heroes, lords, and the like), maybe a tank.
-No magic or knight-ish models.
-Gunline play-style.


Is this type of list viable/plausible?
Has it been done before?
Have people made Revolution-themed armies before?

You could make it work outside the no magic. You NEED magic defense at least.

Why don't you just play an American War of Independence/Revolution wargame?

HEs totally right. you NEED magic defense at least and as far as wanting a re-creation thats completley true, well the revolution wasnt agains orcs, skelletons and ogres... so whats wrong with a little magic OFFENCE?

Love GW's models, and the idea of the Revolutionary Militia facing magical beasts.

As for the magical defense, what would be a good way to deal with enemy magic without being too magic-ky myself?

not the ONLY way... but the best.

especialy in empire... i suppose you could take warrior priests in the off chance they generate dispell dice... plus they add a non magicy magic phase :-).

or theres witch hunters...

but unless your say dwarves... your only chance is with wizards...

You need Wizards to survive against the likes of WoC and such armies. And you can make a decent list without any cavalry but then I would be running rings around you thou

A wizard is the most reliable. Just take lore of metal to go with your overall theme and that is that.

Try toput a captain in as many units as you can afford to give them 'hold the line'. You might want an engineer to stand near the cannon.

well... they alone have magic resistance 2. so a 5+ wsrd against direct damage/magic missiles... and you could nominate a wizard as the heretic for them to tsrget... but thats about it...

Don't forget killing blow against the target. But they don't really have the stats to do what they're supposed todo.

It depends on points. Up to 1000 and you shoulf be ok with a warrior priest/witch hunter as the odds of a lvl 4 a reduced

There's also the problem that WHFB doesn't work very well with primarily missile based armies. Unlike games designed around soldiers of the line, in WHFB these guys are insufferably dull when they dominate an army, for both the player using them and the player opposing them. It's just having every unit sit still, and rolling buckets of dice each turn until you get charged.

It's also a pretty weak list under the current Empire book. Handgunners are a pretty weak choice for the price you pay.

wood elves have 2 styles that i have seen, pure ranged or tree ents beating orks down with minor ranged support. But each time the pure ranged list going in it is boring for each side.

so in my eyes a balanced force is better, but this is empire and magic defense is needed one or two wizards should do paint them like missionaries in the olden times. Say they use pope power anything it is your army.

I think you should take a wizard, it would be an interesting chance to convert a model.

I'd take a level 4 wizard with the Heavens Lore. You could model it as Ben Franklin, preferably with a kite/lightening rod, or maybe some sort of steam punk Testla Gun.

It might be a little on the ridiculous side, but nor more so then a steam powered tank.
