I'm not really big on 40k, but people at my game store are so I thought I would grab something that was just overall fun for everyone, something similar in fun for both sides of the table like Skaven or Goblins in fantasy.

Orks are usually fun to play, large in part because it seems the lighthearted players are the ones that use them.

Orks are the funniest army to play. They are rather strong at the battle field.
In 5th ed, I battled Nids in the final of an RTT. First round I was zooming down my full Nob Biker squad along a flank. Then a Genestealer brood showed up (outflanking) able to charge my Bikers. I declared that Ork Bikers are always in cover. My opponent started whining that this is impossible. Okay, no problem, I let the Genestealers hit first.
The end of the story was that he gave up in round 4 before my Killakans were able to charge his Hive Guard. Better for him, in round 5 I would have completely annhilated his bugs.

Thanks for the comments, and yeah the great thing about orks too is they are cheap and they die, opponents love killing models but as the ork player that pie plate only wiped out 40 pts.

For me it's always grey knights. I love beating them so much. And having the player usually not understand how their supposedly super powerful army loses to lesser space marines.
Beyond that, I typically love playing against eldar or dark eldar cause I love the model range.

Orks are always somehow hilarious (and pretty strong, they always seem to place well) and I agree that the people who play them seem always to be having a good time, so probably them, but I do also like facing Necrons as they have a wealth of interesting options and I don't thing I've ever faced the same sort of Necron list twice.
|
Follow these two simple rules to ensure a happy Dakka experience:
Rule 1 - to be a proper 40K player you must cry whenever a new edition of the game is released, and always call opposing armies broken when you don't win.
Rule 2 - Games Workshop are always wrong and have been heading for bankrupcy within 5 years since the early 90s. |

I love fighting Necrons with my dark eldar! Necrons are an awesome model range and army! Plus with Necrons you can't ever really tell when your gaining momentum. Just when you think you smashed a few out they stand back up and totally bring the upset to a game.

The Stealers would have hit my Bikers with I1 as they had no grenades.
But due to his whining I wanted to stop discussion.
So the Stealers were hitting first. Poor Stealers.

If you want to play orks though, it means you have to paint a ton of models. (Well, I guess you don't HAVE to). I love playing them though. You could take a warphead AND a SAG for the most randomness possible too.
Edit: This biker cover/assault nonsense is PURE MADNESS how did I not notice this

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL You don't, it just gives them a 4+ cover save. By "letting" the Genestealer player assault first, Wuestenfox was actually playing the correct way. That being said, Orks are pretty fun to play against, assuming they get the rules right as above! haha Also, playing against Space Wolves are fun if they're played in their intended way. Aka lots of cool heroes leading badass squads, not a bunch of dude in razorbacks hanging back with missile launchers.

Any army is fun to play against as long as the player isn't running a boring list. Nowhere does it say if you play a necron army, you'd have to play the nightscythe spam list or whatever the internet calls "cheese". I'd rather play against an opponent who is playing an army that he enjoys, than an opponent who is just trying to please me. So, if I was you, Hargus56, I'd just pick the army I like the look/style of, then just go with it.
I mean(and to be on topic), I like Orks, fluff-wise, but I don't think I'm the kind of player who would make Orks fun. I'm not big on making my own conversions for one.

I like it just more of a fantasy player have like 5 fantasy armies. I have quite a few orks I picked up mostly on the cheap with the AoBR sets and some extras like kans, lootas and the like. My son also has some tyranids I can use and I have some fantasy daemons I can put on round bases. As far as to which I am inclined that's a tough call I like IG, Black Templar, Eldar, and DE roughly in that order, I just don't know if I'll play 40k enough to make it worth buying something other then I already have. But that's just me I really just want something fun.

The cheapest armies(cost-wise) are, according to the poll that might be on page 1 or 2 here, grey knights and necrons, so if you're not sure if you're here to stay, they might be a good choice, but since they don't interest you as much, I guess that's kinda moot...! Orks are very fun to play as/against, they have a lot of funny random rules like "Don't press that!"(fluff: Orks getting overly excited and push the wrong button on a vehicle they had stolen), "Red things go faster!!", Old Zogwort's unique psychic power, etc... And since it's the most conversion-friendly army in 40k, it might just be the army for you, you can just use any odds and pieces you find and convert them to look orkish! But if you play hordes and hordes of boyz, then a turn of Orks will take an eternity... Also, if you're very immature, there is just so much laugh to have with Orks' names, i.e. nobz... BT is a very fun army to play against as well, they're a decent assault army, with a fun special rule that allows them to move forward everytime they lose a wound during enemy's shooting phase, should you passed a leadership test. I love playing against my friend's BT for that reason. They're MEQ, so while their models cost a lot(RRP), there are more sellers for marines on ebay or elsewhere, and they usually don't need a whole lot of models to get started(high point cost per model). DE is a very costly army to play as, we need all the transports in the world to survive, so a typical wargame case that could carry almost 1500-2000pt worth of army can only hold 1000pt or so of DE most of the time. Gameplay-wise, we're very specialised, our assault units can't shoot very well(or at all), our shooting units can't assault very well. We're an all attack and no defense army. I haven't play against DE myself, since I'm the only DE player in my group, but I'd say a game against DE should be quite interesting, because of our mobility. No opinion on IG or Eldar as I've never played as or against them. But really, I think you've already qualified for the "fun player" group as you're not just planning to build an army for your own fun, but for others' as well, so I assumed even if you play the "overpowered" army, you wouldn't build the list to be "overpowered"! So just go with the army that works best for you, money/look/playstyle-wise!

Unless I'm missing something, I don't think they ever had that ability even in 5th. I believe the slowed assault/reduction to I1 is specifically from charging through or into Difficult Terrain, not something with a cover save. With that logic, every single army that runs a Big Mek with KFF can easily have 60 or more boyz that are going first off the charge against things without grenades.

I love fighting hordes of cheap stuff, even if I'm fielding hordes of cheap stuff. Guard vs. Orks is always a blast, and pretending I'm playing Starship Troopers (book, not movie!) with lots of Terminators against swarms of Gaunts is great fun. I also really like thematic fights, like Marines vs. Chaos Marines or my Crimson Fists vs. Orks. I hope my Iron Warriors can play against some Imperial Fists when the new dex comes out.
