Would it work? Where people who have no ability to take off work to votw, actually get a chance because it is a national holiday where many places decide allow workers a day off to vote?

I'd say that would increase turnout. Not by much though.

A lot of the non voters are discouraged, cynical or apathetic.

Move it to a Monday or Friday if you're going to make a national holiday out of it. Starting up a manufacturing unit on a Monday just to shut it down on Tuesday sucks.

However, people will just use the day off to stay home and drink or go on vacation somewhere.

No impact on voting, I'm afraid. People that really want to vote can absentee vote if they know they're stuck on shift.

If election day being a national holiday had no impact on voter turnout than those that are trying to limit early voting, and otherwise make it harder to vote, would not be doing so.

But, yes, it probably should be a holiday. Give everyone a week to vote and everyone should get a floating holiday to cover the day they want to vote, that way work can still get done and everyone can vote if they choose to do so.

Fact is that many can't vote even if they want to because of work commitments.

The problem with making it a national holiday is that the government itself would shut down for the day, so nobody would get to vote.

If election day were a national holiday poor minorities would be more able to vote.
We can't have that, can we?
Voter ID, voter intimidation and disenfrancisment of the poor and the brown are Romnids only chance.

Time someone get off at 5ish to go vote they might find out who won before they actually vote.

El Centro! I've stayed there! My company has a plant in Plaster City. Excellent carne asada places there.

Its hot as iraq but there's booze and the best mexican food this side of mexico. Which is about 10 miles to the south.
Plaster city huh? Were you with U.S. Gypsum? Did some work for them awhile back. Seemed like a pretty decent company. Lotta hard workers out there.

Yep. USG. That rail line out there that services the plant is the only narrow track railroad still used in industry (in the US). It's a bitch to refit engines and cars to run on them.

I was out there last January a few times and saw the Blue Angels practicing.
