Something like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Galactus_Cloud.jpg

Which can't be consumed but also denies the Tyranids a food source by eating planets...

A massive army of super advanced squats!

That explains them wiping out the entire race in this universe so that they couldn't evolve into what was chasing them

'Fear' and 'fight/flight' is an instinctive thing on our planet, this is an alien race that biologically functions a way that is completely alien to us, so it could be logical to assume that they don't have the same instincts. The problem with dealing with tyranids is that to comprehend their theoretical functionality, you have to accept that you cannot comprehend them, and they are completely against what we take as logical in our universe.

They could flee from a lot a things :

A really evolving race. Evolution is not mere adaptation. You can see evolution actually at work in Australia : It's creepy. Forgot all the politically correctness like "oh, evolution is not progress, you know". A Mammal, if not surprised, nearly always beat a saurian or a bird of the same weight in fight by sheer agility and stamina (i know the subject. Don't bring Wikipedia or i might hurt you Ork-style).

A biological race were components have real intelligence. Actually, modern animals go for more intelligence as they evolve. Animals like pigs or wolves are not very far behind us (that's creepy how well some species, like canids, understand even abstract notions).

More powerful predatory race.

Highly technological race. I wonder how Tyranids will face against UFP starships using intelligent tactics. You know, like attacking at warp speed since they can...

One thing peoples overlook is how much Tyranids lacked units at the start. Essential units like Artillery, Tyrant guards, seem pretty recent. It's mostly as if Tyranids don't have really units in the voïds between galaxies...

If that were truly the case IRL, then I have no qualms about mass genocide of other species on Earth - starting with apes: gorillas, orangutans, chimps, etc.

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

Others animals will take their place, and probably learn, then evolve, to cope with us.

We have examples of ants learning military tactics. And i mean real military, to counter invasion from other more aggressives ants (don't wonder why the famous South-American ant ddon't exterminated all the others in USA ? Well, US ants found what specialist judged impossible : A mean to make war to stronger ants and don't lose).

It's evolution. SOme scientists think even Man don't evolve anymore, or at least at a speed far slower than other animals : Maybe because our big brain don't have any competitor. With the race for more intelligence is general, BUT other animals continue to evolve all their organim, that mean when animals will have a brain big enough to have civilizations of their own, they will out-evolve us completely in any sense. Hell, A dog is, pound for pound, faster, tougher, more agile, better fighter thant us already, then imagine in what he can evolve, and that's a domesticated animal (we know wolves have evolved enough to have cultural difference between packs, and packs groups, thing we though an human thing. Some even think they have conflicts more or less often because languages differences).

Is that so now? Then I suggest we evacuate all Humans from a given area, and saturate it with neutron bombs - last I looked, nothing can survive a neutron radiation bombardment.

They are deviant enough, i say.

But imagine : Maybe that's why the Tyranids flee.

As i see it, they don't really evolve, just adapt like with lego pieces. I read somewhere they think Yrmgall genestealers are an abomination and don't want them to "pollute" their DNA (mean they don't have perfect filters for absorbing proteins).

Now, maybe they are "stuck" at their actual evolution level. As their combat units don't have to be viable in an ecosystem (look like natural life reduced them at a few "hard core" hyper-specialized" species on planets like Catachan), they still can outcompete most technological species.

But from where they come, evolution continued, and replaced all life-forms in their part of the universe. Tyranids have to flee, because they can't fight against a life where white cells fight with bolters !

The problem with that is the "Instinctive behavoir" rule. Which when combined with the shown intellegence of the Hive Mind and you have a race that is both predator and prey. But a race that would need a flight/fight reflex to evolve to where it is now.

The instinctive behavious rule doesn't show a fight or flight mentality - it shows that they have built in instincts that each type of Tyranid will follow. Creatures designed to lurk and ambush will instinctively do it. Creatures designed to attack without provocation will do it. It's very simplified in the rules, but they don't make a choice, they instinctively follow their designed function.

Something like Genestealers have a fight or flight mentality, and it's shown in the fluff. When a hive fleet arrives at their world, they individually choose what to do. Some will stay and help the hive fleet, others will choose self preservation and flee on evacuating ships, but Genestealers intelligence is very much stated as unique among the Tyranids.

For a race to scare the nids off, all they have to be is about Eldar/Necron level of numbers and tech, but be able to disrupt/nullify the hive mind.

Think blanks but for the synapse links. I'd think that would be enough to drive the nids from a scoured galaxy to a fresh one.

If the Tyranids are running away from anything, it'd be an army of brussels sprouts. They don't taste good, so I doubt the Tyranids would be able to face consuming them all.

On a more serious note, my proper answer is something similar. Cabbage. It would have to be a race that, for some reason, couldn't be digested, or was hard to digest. This means that, were this race to fight the Nids, the Nids would automatically lose, being unable to create more troops and stuff. Which is usually how they win.
