I am relatively new to Warhammer and I had some questions on some of the magic items in the game.

Book of Hoeth - The wording says it is casts with irresistible force on any successful casting roll that includes a double, except a miscast. Does that mean that even though double 6s would normally be irresistible force, it isn't with Book of Hoeth?

Channelling staff - Wizard adds +1 to channelling attempts. Does this mean he channels an extra power dice on a 5+ instead of a 6+, or does it add one to the winds roll?

Gleaming Pennant - Unit may re-roll first failed leadership test. Can the unit re-roll leadership based tests (such as fear or break tests) or just strictly a leadership test?

I know these questions may seem fairly obvious however I would just like to get them cleared up so there's no confusion.

Book: This is from a book written before 8th edition. What it does now is you will get IF on any doubles, ignore the last bit. Read the FAQ.

Channeling Staff: Its +1 to channeling attempts, so 5+ to channel. Nothing to do with Winds.

Cleaming Pennant: Ld test refers to any test involving Leadership. There are other subtypes, but they are all Ld tests.

Thanks a lot. There was a bit of a dispute in a game I played about the gleaming pennant. The issue was if it should work for break tests, so this clears that up.

For the book, any doubles rolled while still meeting the casting number needed is irresistible force. A miscast still only occurs when double 6's are rolled.

Imma gonna piggyback on this thread since the OP was answered
can you have a character with a magic sword and an additional hand weapon?

Nope. Additional hand weapons only work with mundane weapons.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

To be more specific, they only work with mundane hand weapons. You couldn't take a spear and XHW and use both.

The XHW entry even mentions that really the option makes the user have 2 hand weapons.

Can only be taken on foot as well.

But there is one magic item that is an XHW. the Fencer's Blades.

Regular XHWs are classified as a Special Weapon. The same catagory that Spears, Halberds, GWs, etc... fall into.

So if you have an XHW you MUST use the XHW as its a special weapon.

If you have an XHW and another special weapon you may choose which to use.

If you have an XHW(or any other special weapon) and a magic weapon then you must use the magic weapon.

Fencers Blades are paired weapons that take 2 hands and gives the extra attack rule.
This is defferent from the XHW rule in that you can gain the bonus attack from Fencers Blades while mounted.
