I want to make a army of samurai orks, but I have no clue as far as backstory. originally I thought about the movie seven samurai as an inspiration, then I realized seven orks does not an army make, then I thought about the 47 rhonin, but that's still not enough for an ork army. my brain if fried right now and I can't think of anything, so I'm handing it over to Dakka for the night: what is some bit of Japanese history or folklore that would work for an ork army? Right now all I can think of is basing my general off Oda Nobunaga, but if need be I can take that and run with it.

As far as making an army entirely out of samurai, its a bit more suited for elite armies.

That being said, you can certainly make a feudal Japanese inspired ork army. Your regular orks could be the simple pikeman peasants used as front line troops, while your nobs and warbosses/hqs could be modeled as hardcore samurai. That way you'd still have a smattering of the classic samurai as nobs and characters, and could still model ancient medieval weapons and armor.

Just a thought.

Yep thats's what I planned to do. Boyz are ashigaru the nobz are samurai, and the warboss is damyo. I just called them samurai orks as shorthand.

Find as many Ork heads with top knots as possible.

If you can find many small metal panels that look like they'd go to a Trukk, you can bend them together into a ramshackle.

Sadly, Samurai are kind of the opposite of Orks, disciplined, Honorable, swift fighters specialized in killing blows. If you have traces of that without losing the orky feel, you just might be golden.

But hands down, THE most important thing to remember as you build as Ork army: Think, be creative and have fun. If something sounds wild, it'll definitely be more orky. Go with your gut, make some oddball contraptions and let the green paint fly!

Exactly samurai are the opposite of orks, that's why it's so awesome. I've got some ideas for fluff: on a once feudal world a WAAAGH is about to start. There's just one problem: multiple warbosses have arisen at once, threatening to kill the WAAAGH in civil war before it begins. It falls to warboss nobunaga to unite the orks and lead the WAAAGH. To explain the aesthetic they're not actal samurai, they just looted their gear from the actual samurai and decided they liked it.

Dude that is a good Idea, but you make them samurai funny, like they twist samurai bushido ORK way...:-)

ADB: I showed the Wolves revealing the key weakness at the heart of the World Eaters; showing Angron that his Legion was broken and worthless compared to the others; that he was the one primarch who couldn't trust his own warriors, and that they didn't care if he lived or died; showing that loyalty to brothers and sons is the heart of success for the Legiones Astartes, to the point even Lorgar makes a big deal out of saying the World Eaters and their primarch were massively outclassed by Russ, and Angron was too stupid to see the lesson Russ had sacrificed time, sweat, and blood, to teach. We're talking about a battle the Wolves won, by isolating the enemy general through pack tactics, and threatening to kill him, without a hope of defending himself. It was a balance, 50/50 - Angron overpowered Russ, and the Wolves were losing ground to the World Eaters; but Russ and his warriors had Angron by the balls, and barely broke a sweat. They won, no question. Lorgar even says: "The Wolves won, meathead."

Dorn won’t help you either. He’s too busy being the Emperor’s groundskeeper, hiding behind the palace walls. The Wolf is too busy cutting off heads as our father’s executioner, while the Lion holds on to his secrets, and has no special fondness for you. Who else will come? Not Ferrus, certainly. Nor Corax either. Even as we speak, I suspect he flees for Deliverance. Sanguinius?’ Curze laughed cruelly. ‘The angel is more cursed than I. The Khan? He does not wish to be found. So who is left? No one, Vulkan. None of them will come. You are simply not that important. You are alone.’ Konrad Curze to Vulkan

This idea sounds so funny it's awesome. Amazing what you can do with Orks.

I'm in favour of this. Also, why not do them all as samurai? It may not be "historically accurate", but considering what you're about to do...
Also, the "Ronin Space Marines" that were showcased in WD once are doing this as well. Come to think of it, your could work a long-standing feud with this Space Marine Chapter into your fluff, or even have your Orks loot their armour from them!

Oh, and "orkify" the names a bit. Don't call it Daimyo Nobunaga, call him Nob Unargha or something.

If you execute it well and make it more like some hilarious anime type samurai instead of realistic samurai (some guys use 2 swords, or possibly more than 8 (fairly certain that is the most I have seen) in battle), some have giant swords much bigger than themselves, etc.

Also, the swords need to be called "dakkatanas".

Funny to think what bushido laws would they abide - like, kill only if you can kill or pillage only first time, next time just go killing....

My five year old cousin just read this thread over my shoulder. He's asked me to include the samurai power rangers. Poor kid I don't think he knows what a proper samurai looks like.

That's kind of the point. One of the common tactics with real bune ships was to get up next to an enemy ship and board them.
BTW how's this sound for an intro:
Daimyo Orka Nobzunaga studied the map in front of him. Everything had gone wrong since Warboss Ash Cager had rammed the space hulk into the ‘umies pathetic capitol. Grated there was a brief period of glorious krupin’ and lootin’, but with the ‘umies dead the Waaagh had lost its steam with no way off this rock the tribes had split and were warring amongst themselves. This wasn’t how it was supposed to be. Orks were supposed to krump the other gitz, not each other, at least not for this long. He pointed his war fan at one of his samurai retainers. “Round up da boyz, we getting’ the tribes back together and getting’ a proper waaagh goin’ again.”

This sounds like a terrible, terrible idea.

Therefore, it's Orky and will probably work. Do it!

Oh I'm going to be putting this in the P&M blog as soon as the minis arrive, or maybe earlier if I feel like scratchbuilding the landships from stuff I can find in the school store (wonder if they're open today?) Know what, I'm just going to go make a placeholder right now I think.
EDIT: Darn it they're closed, I'll just get the blog going tomorrow after class.
