Since the new Chaos codex is not out yet I can only speculate that while chosen would fill an elite slot, cultists would fill 2 troop slots, Hellbrute either heavy support or elite and the lord obviously being HQ, a full legal 40k chaos army. The dark angels ont he other hand don't seem to fit as a legal army at all. I mean i know that DA can take either termies or bikes as troops but only if they have Belial or Master of the Ravenwing and the tac squad cant be split down to 2 troop choices as a plasma cannon can only be used in a squad of 10... Am I missing something?

Krieg! What a hole...

If you are dead set on using the Dark Angels as a legal army, just use the cannon as a count-as plasma gun.

Am I missing something?

Yes... it's a starter set with themed forces, not an army box. They don't need to be legal, standalone forces.

Pretty much this.

The AoBR set wasn't a legal list on the Marine side either, as it too only came with one Troops choice (The 10 Tactical Marines with missile launcher and flamer). The Orks, on the other hand, could field between 1 and 3 Troops choices, depending on whether you broke up the 20 Boyz into 2 mobz of 10, and whether you used the Nobz as Elites or Troops (it came with a Warboss, which would allow you to take the Nobz as troops). You could also have attached 1 or 2 of the Nobz to the Boyz, and still field the remaining 3-4 Nobz as their own unit.

Im aware previous boxed sets weren't full legal armies on both sides, not sure why I expected different this time, maybe the glut of characters they were putting in, or that the dark angels model selection Is very close to a legal list, 1 more terminator armoured model for a count as Belial, and it would be a legal list.

A second Tactical Squad would do it too. ^_^

I think so, anyways. I haven't played Dark Angels in probably about a decade.

Rumours are floating about that you wont need Belial to make Deathwing troops in the next DA codex. Only rumours though but that would be pretty sweet.

I know very little about Marines outside of BA and I know even less about DA, but don't DA take termies as troops?

Not currently by default. At the moment, they need a SC (Belial) to do it and said SC isn't in the Dark Vengeance box.

So straight out of the box, you couldn't field Terminators as troops using just the models in Dark Vengeance and the old Codex at this point in time.

That doesn't exclude the options of a) adding Belial to the collection to make them troops or b) the upcoming DA-Codex perhaps allowing Terminator-Troops without said SC.

Ah so it's kinda like Drago and his palis.

Yeah I was wondering about that because my friend who has been collecting DA for years said something about fielding a Termie army, I wasn't sure if they needed a special IC or not.

Its simple moneymaking. Not a GW hate but simple reasoning.

Step 1- Sell Dark Angels with Chaos/Orks as full, playable army and Marines as not, leaving out a troop (Tac Squads)
2- The imbalance of points and utility means the Marines win more often than not. This means majority of the newbies who nuy the starter set see MEQ as better and choose them over the weaker enemies.
3- Having purchased Starter set, they rush down to nearest GW to buy MOAR MAHREENS! GW sell them C:SM.
4 They read £25 Codex only to find that 1 Tac Squad is too small and go buy a second or buy scouts.
5 GW uses these 3 generic Space MArine purchases to justify more marine support and to make better marine kits. "They are most popular because they sell more!"
5Profit!!!

Your logic falls apart at point #2, because the Chaos player dissapointed at losing to MEQ is playing MEQ. If they want more power armour, the first thing they're going to do is buy the codex and more Chaos in power armour. Which would result in Chaos selling more, and Chaos getting more support, not loyalist Marines.

But, Chaos isn't MEQ, its GEQ with a pittle MEQ. Not only that but many of the little "kids" (8-11 with more parents' money than sense) wouldn't have the idea to split with a friend. They will buy it, expecting a 1 player game (granted that now DV actually has a few). And they'll get "Daddy" or a friend to play with them.

For those that do split or have a brother, again aged 8-11, the (generally) losing CSM player will rage and say "Nerdrage your stuff's better!" and then go buy SM because they are set in the idea that SM are better and they want to win.

For those aged 12+ it generally doesn't apply due to maturity, access to only forums such as Dakka and Warseer, or common sense to ask.

The Chaos in Dark Vengeance has a small amount of MEQs. When they go look at the Chaos stuff in a GW sotre, 100% of that they see is in power armour or terminator armour.

You know what they say when you make an assumption.
