Agreed with the above.

One Wolf Pack box nets you tons of extra bits. I'm up to my ears in Space Wolf bits and have only acquired about 4 boxes.

chain axe is actually a decent way to go, but really, it's only one bit... you'll need a SW boxed set, and just merge the kits together, or learn how to sculpt fur

Yeah, my wolves were cobbled together from a mix of regular Marine, Space Wolf, Black Templar and Blood Angel parts, just with any other Chapter-specific iconography removed.

First of all, Space Wolves don't HAVE to be dressed to the nines in wolf bling. Used to be they just were marines with grey armor.

That being said, I agree, buy a SW pack box, but also buy at least one of these:
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440285a&prodId=prod150001a

It's an invaluable piece because it comes with: power sword, power axe, power fist, meltagun, an icon for a vehicle, a banner pole & a wolf guard backpack, pad & torso back that is loads better than the ones that come in the wolf box.

Nice thread, i'm too starting a wolf army (inspired by prospero burns).
Its a way of getting me back in as Ive grown tired of my other marine army. (there is only so much red you can paint)

I've got a black reach set knocking about, i was gonna pick up some wolf boxes too as a start, glad to here there are lots of bit for converting normal marines too. I've got loads of marine tanks and speeders still to be opened, hopefully this project will get me back at full speed and inspired.

Some of the wolves work on here is amazing.

Black Reach would be hard to Wolf up, but there's so much stuff in the Space Wolves pack box that you could easily deck out an entire Battleforce with it. You'd probably still have bits left over at the end!

Black reach can be done, but it's not plug & play like with the regular kits. It requires a fair bit of cutting & sanding/filing but I've done it & it can turn out quite nicely. My recommendation is (from easiest to hardest): backpack swaps, gun swaps, head swaps, shoulder pad swaps, breastplate swaps. Steer clear of legs unless you wanna completely chop the model in half at the waist, GS a ball joint on the legs & attach a full SW torso there & the cut the legs of a SW mini flat at the ball joint & attach to the AoBR marine torso.

Again, it is do-able, but it's not simple or quick so it depends on your level of seriousness. However, that being said, if you have a large enough SW army, you can toss in a couple of AoBR bolter marines into the GH packs (so long as it's only 1-2 per pack of 8-10) & it won't be overly noticeable after paint.

How long ago was that? Rogue Trader days? I've been collecting Space Wolves since 2nd edition and they've always been wolfed and runed out, that codex goes back 20 years and has images of the old school metal Space Pups that were still wolfed up.

But yeah, you could just paint them grey and be done with it, but I personally think that's a bit boring, lol. Some people prefer the more regimented look though.

I've been playing since early 2nd Ed & I do recall quite a few of them back then either had minimal wolfing or even none at all, correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the original Long Fangs just devastators with the only wolfy model being the Sgt.? And yes, in Rogue Trader they were just space marines with nothing special or different at all.

Nah, the Long Fangs in 2nd edition were plenty wolfy, more so than the Blood Claws and Grey Hunters. That was back when the heavy weapons were held over the shoulder. From memory, a couple of them had bare heads with the standard Space Wolf look to them and I think they all had wolf fur loincloths and various runes and things on them.

I think most the old metal Space Wolves were, well, wolfy, I don't remember any that were just standard Space Marines. Even in 2nd edition there was a specialised range of Space Wolf Terminator models, Grey Hunters, Blood Claws, Long Fangs, Wolf Guard, Iron Priests, and special characters.

2nd edition were actually some of my favourite Space Wolf models, I should try and pick them up on ebay when they come up because I always preferred them to the ugly 3rd edition plastic Space Wolves (though the current plastic Space Wolves I think are pretty good as well).
