I want to start a flesh tearer army that includes sanguinary guard but I dislike their gold color... Would it be socially acceptable to paint them black and red instead of the traditional gold?

I don't see why not. Every chapter does things their own way, so why wouldn't the FTs have their own SG colors.

You can paint them how you like, generally rules are wysiwyg not what colour things are. If anyone says anything tell them to suck on it.

I think B&R would look better than gold anyway, since gold is very hard to paint well on such large areas. Hope to see the finished result!

It does specifically say in the BA codex that all BA successor chapters except (I think) Angels Encarmine and Lamenters have their Sanguinary Guard in gold.

But, whatever. I run FT, too, and I agree that they would look silly in gold. I think black and red is fine. I've seen lots of black and red FT SG out there, and it looks good.

I've been thinking about doing some maybe very dark gold or bronze or something. Not sure yet.

Wouldn't Black and Red be the same as Death Company?

Not a BA player myself but i would suggest go with a darker tone than gold. Maybe Brass or Bronze to go with the Flesh Tearers darker theme overall.

Yes, but the red X of the Death Company is more significant than the color scheme.

Paint the SG however you like. Sounds like you are going to model them as SG anyway so it won't matter what color they are.
