I'd just like to know what some of the best non-traditional armies are. By non-traditional, I just mean uncommon lists. Builds that you'll rarely see, yet they can still be somewhat effective....All scout-based marines, for example. Close-combat guard armies. etc...

What are some "original" and interesting armies that can still win an occasional game?

Veil crons are fun as hell, with zandrekh and obyron, veil teks, a ton of warriors, and a few quantum shielded vehicles like anny barges or supporting ghost arks. Sometimes add szeras to enhance a 20 man warrior squad.

It is a very hit and miss style, but can certainly win games!

Victory is not the most important outcome. Enjoyment and excitement is the best outcome, victory is sweeter when it was fun.

Pure Tau lists, it's very hard to fight a battle with only shooty units but with careful positioning and the new boosts to shooting in general it can be super effective.

Tried CC guard again the other day, and was amazed at how well it did. I didnt use allies either. Pure IG codex the whole way. Just ran lord commissars with fists in a couple of blobs with mauls and axes, and they just kicked teeth in left and right Wiped an entire Black templar crusader squad, half a harliquin squad (before they faq'd that stupid 2d6" to see them no less) and even killed off a squad of death company.

Probably not something I'd do on a daily basis, but man was it fun. I am considering taking a single power blob in future lists though. They're too much fun to not take

C:SM bike armies, wazdakka ork biker armies, and ravenwing. All are a rare sight.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. I've seen a CC Gaurd in 5th that was out there. Not sure how it would work in 6th

used 2 full sized blobs with meltas, every squad had a commisar with PW CCW and the sgt's all had PW CCW. One preacher way in the back so he couldn't actualy make it to the fight as a ID.

In the middle and slightly behind the mobs was a chimera with Straken. So you have 2 blobs with 56 people in them, that on the charge hit with 40 PW attacks at I 4 Str 4 with reroll to hit, and 45 ablitave wounds you don't care about as your LD 10 with a reroll

Tau + imotek with black sun filter fun? I've seen it mess up alot of other gunlines

Also Tau + eldar is very very good. Seldom seen though as neither army is that popular. Heck, tau in general is kind of rare and I'm in Japan!

Imhoteks lightning also would hit your tau as they count as enemies

hrm.. may have played it wrong then, we interperated that the lightning was shot at them and that allies of convenience did not let you shoot them hence we let them coexist without problems though now I'm not so sure.

I play an ork list with 10 orks in it,total.

Mega armored warboss, mega armored big mek, deff dread, one flyboy in the dakkajet and six runtherds.

And sixty grots, six big gunz, three kills kans and nine grot tanks as warbuggies. It's a list that has garnered nothing but pure shock on the face of every opponent-win or lose.

I deploy the gunz behind an ADL, one sea of gretchin on either side with a boss in front of each, walkers right down the middle and spam the flanks with buggies. Da bosses are mostly just ablative 2+ armor saves for the approach and I switch to LOS once they get down to 1 wound. I've absolutely decimated TFG at my club, who was running a necron flying circus- that's a quad gun, nine twinlinked rokkits, six kannons and six rokkits on the kans- plenty of opportunity for those sweet sixes. There was just nowhere for him to land and contest. Those grots, when they're spread, take up half the board easy, and all his wounds on 2+ despairteks were was a waste of points.

There was nothing more satisfying than seeing the people slowly gather around at the table as the game was going on.

"Wait, he's losing? What the heck, he tabled my space wolves on turn two last game!"

Clearly the metagame has shifted. The time of the space marine is past. The twilight of the necron is here.

The time of the grot has arrived. Witness their rising.... And despair.

I would LOVE to try that sometime, just for a few laughs.

I'd probably want to try and DS a land raider but obviously I'd have to see if that's a good idea in-game.

Regarding the BA Land raider list... 6 LR's at 2K is funny, but doens't work as well as you would hope against say IG Melta Tastic.

In 5th at least, what did work was 4 Land raider + assualt Terms. 2 Redeemer, 2 God hammers.

Shooty Nid list. Suprisingly effective with tons of Deathspitters and Devourers. Add in Biovores, Hive Guard and a few Dakkafex for good mesure. People usually refer to it as a warrior list as it generally takes 2 big blocks or warriors with primes and deathspitters.

Confuses the heck out of people.

I played against a shooty nids list and you are right it threw me for a loop that they were not trying to get as close as possible as fast as they could.

I like my all biker army in 2k and running a majority kroot list can be fun but not totally all that effective if you are looking to win. unless you purposly put tons of forests on the field .

I personally build armies that seem fun and not really think about what would win games. Hince my Kroot army

Back in 3rd I had a Biel Tan army with a court of the young king, a falcon, a farseer, and then 1 squad of every kind of aspect warrior. Did not win me a lot of games, but did wonders for my tactical thinking.

I also ran a ba army in 5th that was a mix of dante, sanguard, assault marines, and vanguard. Another list I had a lot of fun playing.

I run 4 russes at 1750+ along with other tanks (depending on points) with great effect. I'm going to throw in a bastion for more av 14 spam in the near future. Never underestimate force denial.

Armored Company since White Dwarf 296 and don't you forget it.

I ran three full harlie squads to great effect in 5th, but the changes in 6th have left me a bit unsure with to do with them now. I relied pretty heavily on both the inability to shoot them at range, and the 5th edition tendency to throw points into mech/AT instead of anti infantry.

I few that I've seen that can be really effective are dakka-nids (Tyranofex and Zoanthrope based list) and assault IG (Ogryn-based). Both are pure cheese but when they work at my FLGS we laugh so hard. Also pure cult CSM is fun. I run pure T-Sons and I have done pretty well this year. Unforgiving but different.

Grab Eldrad, Maugan and a DE HQ. Take 3 Eldar Harlie Squads for giggles. Spread the HQs out over the multiple Harlie squads. Laugh hilariously as you can't really do much but have super durable units. MUHAHAHAHAH

I had Mad Dok Grotsnik lead a Green Tide list of 104 Boyz at an 1850 Tourney. He was supported by 2X15 Lootas, 5 Rokkit Koptas, a Bike Boss. I won all three matches and took second place.

I don't write the rules. My ego just lives and dies by them one model at a time.
