I couldn't agree more. I love all the wacky, hand-sculpted Chaos models from this era.

Thanks! The resistance fighters were a lot of fun to paint. Also, really fast, since they lack all the little gubbins you get on fantasy and/or SF models.
The theme for this month's Dakka challenge is Finish It. I have pulled a few projects out of demotivational limbo. First, a Frostgrave summoner and apprentice:

I started these models for a previous Dakka Challenge (July 2024, Sidekicks), but got bogged down by my lack of good purples. A couple of months ago, I ordered a four-pack from Vallejo-- eagle-eyed readers may have noticed the change in my palette-- and as a result found the motivation to get these guys done.
I also dug into the Closet of Shame for the next entry in my Chaos Warband sub-project:

I will be relying on the d100 Followers table in Slaves to Darkness to build this little warband. My first roll was for five Beastmen, and these were the only unpainted Beastmen in the box. The sculpts are a little rough (usually referred to as "character," I believe), but the nostalgia vibes are strong.
Finally, the last of the Catachans, which are still WIP:
The models are painted, but I need to break out the kneadatite and make some details for their bases.
To round out the month, I have some Chaos Thugs for the warband based and ready for paint:

Massive photodump today.
Let's start with one of my potential entries in the Dakka Challenge, Brother-Scout Plissken:

While searching online to try to figure out when this model was released (1988), I came across an example of this guy painted in Flesh Tearers colors, in which the painted remarked on the model's resemblance to "Snake" Plissken. I decided to go in that direction with his colors.
My alternative entry is a few Nexus Marines for Kryomek.

My original plan was to paint these guys in US Space Force uniform colors, but from what I can tell, the Space Force mostly wear olive drab BDUs. Then I noticed how weird the sculpting is. For example, the gun arm on the guy in the first photo is out of proportion with the rest of the model, like a Popeye arm. A couple of the others are holding their off hand in weird, inanimate positions, like a department store mannequin. Also, the sculpts are kind of flat, almost 2.5D. So, I decided that these guys are all Terminators, with cyborg arms and battle-damaged faces. If I do enter these guys in the Challenge, here are the photos I will use:

I'm torn as to which models I should enter. Which do you think would get the most votes?
I also painted up what I believe to be the last remaining models in my Ghosts of Gaia collection:

And the last of the Catachan Jungle Fighters:

And finally, some Chaos Thugs for the Chaos Warband project, which I may be the only participant in.
Bird-dude:

A trio of Mad Max-dudes:

A Frank N. Furter cosplay thug:

and a fully armored dude:

And here is the warband to date:

Thanks! My good friend and fellow Dakkite Cygnnus had a whole bunch of the aliens, so I picked up these guys to fight him. We never played, though. Despite their odd proportions, the models paint up pretty well.

Thanks for the feedback. The Ghosts of Gaia fall outside of the theme for the challenge, so I went with the Kryomek dudes.
I based the GoG colors on Team U, who appeared in Ultraman Saga, which my son and I watched countless times before he outgrew tokusatsu heroes.

It’s been a day since then, hasn’t it? Models are long gone, but I”m pretty sure I still have the rule book tucked away somewhere.
Lovely work, as always. Nice to see the old models getting some love!

I seem to recall that the Kryomek rules had something interesting that 40K didn't, but I don't remember exactly what.

I started April by closing out my projects from March. First, a RT-era Adventurer:

The model is leaning really far forward, to the point where he has trouble staying upright, even after I bent he ankles back a bit. The giant kneepads reminded my of Judge Dredd, so I used a more garish pallete than usual.
Next, a Chaos Sorcerer/Champion:

I painted this guy to join the Chaos Warband I shared last time. I seem to be the only one participating in that little group project, so I'll be putting that on hold for now. I'm something of an Oldhammer scholar, but for the life of me I can't identify the sigil he wears on his right shoulder/armpit guard, the one that looks kind of like a figure-eight. It's not one of the four Chaos Gods, and not Malal. Does anyone know what it is?
The theme for this month's Dakka Challenge is "Irregular." One doesn't get much more irregular than Harlequins:

Seen together, the lighting on the NMM is decidedly inconsistent between the two models. They look OK individually, though. I'll be painting more Harlies over the month and entering my favorites in the challenge.

Still think those old Chaos Sorcerers are some of the most characterful GW/Citadel ever came out with. I definitely remember that guy from back in the day. Based on his gear, you’d think Nurgle. But I also seem to recall seeing it on another old Chaos Sorcerer as well. Wouldn’t be surprising considering how they reused core bodies.
But doing some digging, the only place I could find it showing up was in an unpublished illustration of symbols, apparently drawn by Martin McKenna, for the 1986 Warhammer Fantasy Role Playing Game Supplement, “The Enemy Within”. See towards the bottom of the page at:
https://awesomeliesblog.wordpress.com/2020/01/01/topos-symbol-of-chaos/
But that doesn’t really answer what it was. Def not any variant of the “big 4” I remember. Def not the black/white face icon of Malal. Not the Horned Rat. But the Big 4, Horned Rat, Chaos Undivided, and Sigmar(?!?!!) all show up in that graphic… Along with the mystery symbol. Strange indeed…
But lovely paint jobs as always! You keep reminding me I should probably try to restart my own P&M thread that died a couple of years back.. Have quite a bit painted since then.
Ah! Found one.. it is a little hard to see with the black primer, but the top of this Sorcerer’s staff has that same symbol

Thanks, and I agree that this entire line, at least the ones sculpted by Jes Goodwin, are among the best models Citadel ever produced.
The mystery sigil appears on several models across the range:

along with a few other, different sigils. It may just be a Jes Goodwin tic.

Thanks! I tried, and then scrapped, diamonds on both of these models. I've been looking a tutorials, and will give it a go on at least one model in this set.
