It's the rare cover that not only stands on it's own, but makes you appreciate the original more. Not unlike the Gary Jules cover of "Mad World."

Jimi Hendrix's of All Along the Watchtower.
Johnny Cash's of Hurt.
Smashing Pumpkins' of Landslide.
Whitney Houston's of I Will Always Love You.
Jack White's of Jolene.

We're getting off topic, but yeah, I'm right there with you.

 Polonius wrote:
I'd agree with all but Hurt. I think Johnny Cash just heisted that song. Maybe in a few more years i'll rediscover the NIN one, but right now... it just sounds so phony.

How about Nirvana's "Man who sold the World?"

Or should we make this a new topic?

Done.

Almost every cover song on that CD is amazing. Man Who Sold the World, Jesus Doesn't Want Me For a Sunbeam, Plateau by the Meat Puppets, and of course the absolute killer of Ledbelly's In the Pines.

I've loved the original of Hurt since I was a teenager, though. Johnny's cover is amazing, but I still feel the original more.

It's a bit more obscure, and also awful because it involves a no-hit wonder rap/rock/pop group, but Elwood's cover of Sundown is catchy as hell, but brings some love to Mr.Gordon Lightfoot.

That's a fun one. And yeah, it makes me appreciate the original more. Along those lines, how about Type O Negative's cover of Seals & Crofts' Summer Breeze?

Oh, another great random one- How about the tango version of The Police's Roxanne from Moulin Rouge? Absolutely killer.

Thanks, man, but is this in relation to a specific occasion, or just appreciation for the thread? Important question, though- what kind of shots?

If you like bizarre covers of Gordon Lightfoot songs...

I'm a reasonably big fan of the Dandy Warhols. They do drone rock in a pretty interesting way, and I've had too much fun with 13 Tales of Urban Bohemia to ever listen to it with my current girlfriend. One of the guys is a relative of a crewmember of the fitz. This version takes a while to build up, but it's creepy as hell.

Though, if you don't like the original, there's simply an upper limit to how close of friends we can be.

Spoiler:
My family are Great Lakes maritime history buffs. I have a print of the fitz in it's final storm on my office wall, and the unofficial family motto is "We are holding our own," which is the last radio message from Captain McSorely before she sank. My father often says that he proposed to my mother, and first discussed having kids, "on the banks of Lake Gitchee Gumee."

I know it was listed in the OP but I just can't just say enough about it... so here's Trent Reznor himself.

"I pop the video in, and wow... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore... It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure"

My favourite game (being a music nerd) is trying to discover songs that people don't even know are covers, such as 'Denis' by Blondie, which is actually an old doo-wop song, by the amusingly-named Randy and the Rainbows:

Also worthy of honourable mention are 'Babe, I'm Gonna leave You' by Led Zeppelin (originally by Joan Baez) or the Byrds' 'Turn! Turn! Turn!' (originally by Pete Seeger). In fact, the Byrds are notorious for taking songs and making them their own - I prefer each and every one of their Dylan covers to the original. Yes, even 'Mr. Tambourine Man'!

Nirvana also did some good covers, though I'm not a fan of the stuff on 'Unplugged'. I prefer the recorded stuff like 'Molly's Lips' , 'Son of a Gun' (both by the Vaselines, and on Incesticide if memory serves) or The Wipers' 'Return of the Rat' ( which only appeared on Japanese/Australian EP entitled 'Hormoaning' iirc).

Agreed with KC, That video is awesome

I can't post any videos unfortunately, but I have a few. - I'll come back and edit this with links when I get home.

Sleeping Satellite, Karnivool did a fantastic version of this. The original is by someone whos name I can't remember. Not bad, but Karnivool's is, I think, far better.

Spoiler:

Original - Tasmin Archer

Cover - Karnivool

Also: Metallica's cover of Astronomy by Blue Oyster Cult - It's just awesome.

Spoiler:

Original - Blue Oyster Cult

Cover - Metallica

And I second Johnny Cash's Hurt - although I personally prefer NIN's original.

EDIT: Thought of another as soon as I clicked submit

KoRn's cover of Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall - The original is fantastic and I think I prefer it to the cover, but KoRn do a fantastic job, and it sounds so different, but still awesome.

Spoiler:

Original - Pink Floyd

Cover - KoRn

Good point!

There isn't really a contest, of course the original is the better! But, surprisingly, KoRn's was the first version of the song I heard, and probably one of my favourite songs by them, so there's that.

Ha! Genius..... I didn't even know that Korn had had the brass bo*****s to even cover that song! I had to check it out and yeah...... It's as bad as I feared. Never mess with perfection, it don't get you anywhere!

On topic, cover songs I think are better or redefine the original? Well it has to be Metallica's cover of 'Stone Cold Crazy'. That's just awesome. Or Therapy's? cover of 'Diane', originally by 'Husker Du'. Both awesome songs in their original form, but both covered with a touch of genius....

Agreed x10.

My old band supported Queen Adreena at Middlesbrough Cornerhouse back around the time when that came out - showing my age there! They were really nice people, though Katie was a bit mad - she took our bass-player out picking flowers in the municipal park, then they had a picnic. In Middlesbrough town centre. Bonkers. Awesome live though, and very sexy in the flesh.
