Somewhere in the steamy jungles of the south...

Has anybody on here considered instituting a reputation system? A system in which people can give points to posters who make good posts, and deduct points from people who troll/break the rules? It would be a good way to keep stupidity in check, and would help sort out the bad posters/donkey caves from the people who actually contribute to the forums.

There are risks: for one, a reputation system of boons and docks could be used as a way to bully people and could end up increasing negativity, so there would need to be strict rules governing the system to prevent some of the abuse that can develop. There would have to be detailed guidelines about when to dock and when to boon. Some ideas:

1: Make it so that you cannot dock/boon someone until multiple times in a row. Maybe make it so that you cannot dock/boon someone again until you have docked/boone ten other people.

2: A reputation system would need some serious policing to prevent abuse and bullying. I've gotten docked by people on other forums for simply stating that I like Warhammer.
2.1: One way of doing this would to do one of two things: only allowing people to dock points once they have received a level of points that indicates they are a trustworthy, valuable member of the community OR make it so that only DCMs can dock points.

As stated, this kinda system would need heavy policing and supervision, but I think that it would really improve the quality of the forums.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

_Tim?

A system that equals an internet popularity contest with no tangible benefits and that requires heavy policing by forum moderators who are doing the job for no money to prevent abuse?

Not really seeing it.

I could see it working if you just instituted the boon idea. The docking points element would be more trouble than it's worth.

While it may be interested, it'd probably cause more trouble than its worth. I think when this came up in the past as well Lego seemed pretty against the idea of adding a popularity contest in, but better for him to put in his say than me to put words in his mouth.

I think Lego and Yak have stated numerous times that reputation systems offer nothing, and are difficult to police, to the point where it becomes an annoyance.

It's a popularity contest thing. People who post on OT would have great ratings, and no one else would even use it. Isn't exalting more or less the same thing?

I don't like the idea. It'd make the community too "in" on itself, puts off newcomers.

I'd like this system, but that's only because I'm super pretty and hot and everyone likes me. I guess you could say I'm totally fetch.

Exalting is pretty much the same thing behind the scenes, but we dont have a public interface to the combined score yet (mainly as we wanted to see how it was being used). We have enough data to be able to do something with that now, but are still playing with options.

Exalting is actually kind of irritating to me because I am primarily using a phone to navigate Dakka. If the phone pauses or my hand shakes and I exalt a post there is no way for me to eliminate it. You have no idea how many posts of neglible content I have exalted by accident.

I've done it too, I just assume that it was either 1) Some greater power (probably the almighty Yakface) telling me that I did indeed like that thread, or 2) I have fat fingers.

I prefer to believe the first.

That only removes it from the list no? I thought the same so decided to check earlier...

Theres even a paragraph underneath that explains that an Exalt is permanent so 'choose wisely'.....

It does exalt, but on the whole it balances out without issue. You can see the top exalted posts at the moment here:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/jforum.page?module=posts&action=listExalted

and as you can see it is all pretty legit.

You'd think so but...well, i thought thats what it did as well (ie. remove the exalt), so unless it does and that explanatory paragraph just hasnt changed since the fix was implemented.....?

I dunno, maybe lego will chime back in and let us know...

The problem with that system, is this is the internet. If I say or do anything, that rubs someone the wrong way, even slightly, I would get bumps down simply because the 1 person thought I was being rude, or a jerk, or even not incredibly nice. To easy to be abused really, There was a mud bogging site I used to go on that had something like that, and my rep was terrible simply because I drove a Ford.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

On forums where I've seen it used, it does do something towards making people think about the quality of their posts... But I agree with the general consensus that while there may be good points, it would probably be bad in the long run.
