If I were to write the fluff, I'd purpose it to be an actual xeno.. probably one that's figured out how to live forever off the souls of others - but has taken their physical bodies so they must be contained in some sort of shell unless the denizens of warp possesses them. Similar, but not the same as a few others already in the fluff. Not really my idea either lol.

40k doesn't need a new race yet. Minor races should be introduced via the Tau Empire, like Demiurg.

I'm sure I heard somewhere that part of the reason for the Allies matrix was to allow for lots of mini-dexes for the various other strange factions and races of aliens around, kind of like a 'dogs of war' codex if you like.
The Xenology book introduced some weird and horrifying alien races, but Dark Heresy and FFG's various spinoffs really did a wonderful job of adding so much more.
Imagine getting a mini-dex, for allied mercenaries, for even a quarter of this list:
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Category:Minor_Alien_Species_and_Factions#.UGgIkU11-Bo
The Slaugh are totally horrifying and would be great! but just as good would be those weird battle-tiger things, I can't remember the name or what book they came from, but they're brutal as hell.

If you HAD to pull from fantasy, I want space Fimir!
Otherwise I'd just like a race who looked cool, unique, and not derived from fantasy or too many fantasy tropes. A race a bit more pure sci-fi in nature would a long way, IMO. Fluff wise, I'd like them to be adept at giving the nids an arse kicking!
A non Imperium/Chaos Human faction might be cool too (Like the Interex)

How about a Xenos codex that included a variety of intelligent and animalistic species such as the megarachnid and the Jorgal creatures from the bottle world. That way you could set up different scenarios fighting different aliens. Not a true codex in a sense but a codex that would expand on the background Xenos. Each race would get 2 to 4 pages of details and short army/unit choices. Kind of how the 2nd edition black codex that came in the starter set allowed you to field any of the 40k armies available at launch (orks, chaos, nids and cults, squats, marines, literally everyhing).
On a side note I miss things like the 2nd edition assassins codex. 15$ supplement that any imperial army could choose from. These little codexes added a lot of spice. I would happily settle for an all inclusive hard bound Xenos codex.

Codex: Junkers Guild
Contents
The Junkers Guild
Within the core of the galaxy and many astroid belts beyond, lie countless treasure troves of minerals and resources.
These bountiful areas are infested with an odd xenos known as "Junkers" or "Scrapers" though they refer to themselves as the Xidric.
These short statured creatures care little for the empires forged by the more warlike races of the galaxy.
They are content to roam the stars and seek out new locations in which to invest their time and resources.
Declaring ownership of rogue comets and asteroids, as well as astroid belts and space hulks.
These xenos travel through space via space hulks, much like the Orks, and also use smaller vessels to move about their
territories and feifdoms. The Xidric have a high level of technology that they use to mine, terraform and defend themselves from threats.
No records are known to have shown these xenos ever having engaged another race in open warfare. The seem to be incredibly elusive,
however it is unknown whether this is intentional or not.
The Junkers and the Imperium of Man
The first recorded encounter by Imperial vessels with the Xindricoid race occured in the year xxxxx.xx in the xxx system.
During an feirce battle with the Orks of Waaagh!!! xxx, several Imperial ships were forced to take refuge behind the primary astroid belt of the system.
Sensors detected a small fleet of ships hidden within the belt. Believing the ships to be an Ork ambush, several fighter wings were dispatched to flush them out.
The pilots reported a vast network of ships and structures deeper in the belt but had yet to be fired upon. Orders were given to destroy these targets
as they, in the opinion of the Imperials had no right to be there. Moments after the first shots were fired the newly encountered xenos bared its own teeth.
Hundreds of tiny spacecrafts began fleeing from the astroids. Huge detonations rippled throughout the strange alien network.
The resulting debries spread out, crashing into the Imperial fighter craft. Massive losses were suffered by the Imperials within the belt while great slabs of stone flew in every direction.
Busy with the Orks the Imperials were unable to pursue the newfound xenos and simply made a side note of their involvement in the battle.
Decades later, the Adeptus Mechanicus vessel 6159.048, began mining operations within an asteroid belt within the xxx system.
After a few hours of deploying servitors and mining teams to the surface of a particularly mineral rich rock the Mechanicum teams began intercepting transmissions from elsewhere in the belt.
Unable to interpret the xenos signals they continued work as normal. Without warning the Mechanicus work teams were suddenly overrun by an unknown xenos using complicated technologies.
Reports from the surface claimed that the attackers were using powerful lasers and cutting tools as well as some sort of magnetized weaponry. Mechanicus defence teams were deployed to repel the xenos forces.
A breif battle ensued with the Imperials the victor as the strange xenos fell back to their odd space craft and retreated from the surface. Several Mechanicus ships were sent to hunt the fleeing vessels down.
The Mechanicum vessels found nothing as the xenos disappeared deeper into the belt.
Halfway through their mining operations the Mechanicum was once again assaulted by the strange new xenos. They seemed to have returned in strength but focused their efforts on the mining colony.
Hundreds of tiny craft made landfall upon the asteroid and began attacks againts the Mechanicum workers. Perpared for just such an assault the Mechanicum had deployed a small force of Skitarii to defend the mining camp.
Skatarii forces clashed with the xenos on the asteroids surface. Their powerful weapons made quick work of the attackers but the little xenos had brought surprises of their own.
Great beasts were goaded into combat from within the alien vessels holds. These beasts seemd at home in the airless environment of the rocks surface. Their natural skin and shells took enourmous amounts of punishment from the Skatarii forces.
Amongst the alien swarms were large cannons, mounted on hovering platforms. Powerful blasts of energy carved into the surface of the asteroid, cutting great chunks of stone from the surface.
Further hovering platforms bore dozens more xenos into the fray. Using the holes cutinto the surface the aliens made their way deeper into the asteroid to assault the worker teams within the mining camp.
Little resistance could be offered by the Mechanicum as the aliens made their way to the defenders from below.
The Adepts on board their command ship ordered a complete withdrawl from the asteroids surface. By then it was too late.
The xenos had disabled most of the shuttle craft and equipment on the surface. They also appeared to be dismantling the shuttles and oddly... the Skitarii.
The Tech Adepts emidiatly sent word for assistance. They wer answered by the Ultramarines chapter of the Adeptus Astartes. However it would be a 2 week wait for them to arrive.
Upon reaching the system the Ultramarines could find no trace of the signal sent from the Mechaniucm vessel or the xenos who attacked them.
After serching for several hours the auspex of the Astartes cruiser found the Mechanicum ship... or rather what remained of it.
The ancient craft had been dismanted and looted. The crew were frozen in the void, floating like satalites around the skeletal remains of the great Mechanicum ship.
Upon closer inspection it was evident the ship was violently taken apart from within. What scraps remained showed evidence of melta technology and small arms damage.
The surface of the asteroid was no different. All mining crew had been slain by the same unknown weaponry. The Skitarii lay in broken piles of flesh, all inorganics taken.
The minerals prossessed by the Mechanicum had also been taken, as well as all other technology on the asteroids surface. Further inspection revealed that all minerals of worth had also been removed from the asteroid.
With great apology the Ultramarines reported their findings to the Adeptus Mechanicus of Mars. The Mechanicus deceided it would be best to keep knowlege of this new threat from the Imperium at large.
However it was immediatly declaired that these new aliens were the enemy of the Omnissiah and must be eraticated from the galaxy.
Still needs work.

The Strogg from Enemy Territory: Quake Wars are different from the previous Quake's, I'd say ET:QW Strogg because of

Some kind of Xenos with tribes of intermingling species (like Halo Covenant) that is hating everyone.

Dwarves (Squats).
Oh they've done that already and messed it up with silly Exo-armour and trikes.
They could buy the rights for Transformers (TM) from Hasbro.
Hang on a minute they could do Squats again and have them as a sub-terrainian race and get some Hellbore mole vehicles back into it. Possibly re-do EVERYTHING else about them and for love of the imperium no Apocolypse Land Train.
A lizard based army could be good; make them sluggish during night fighting and awesome when it gets a bit warmer - still too humanoid for my liking.
They could do the race of the Ork Masters - presuming they weren't snotlings.
What GW need to go for is a brute of a creature which has useless stats and weapons to ensure they can charge £££££ for each individual (albeit finely crafted) troop model and force those using the list to buy hundreds for the creatures.
Or maybe they could re-vamp squats; this appear to be a very popular choice over the course of this post and so it must be true; as long as they don;t mess it up with bone headed imperial knock-off equipment and go making the imperium their best friends.

Maybe if it was suggested by a furry. And Slann are also already part of the universe.
To top it off, I haven't heard of many foxes working in packs. So you're either ignorant or you're just another furry inserting your fetish into the game. Judging by your name I am assuming the latter.

Demiurg appear to be the best option for Squats reborn; they're in the BFG universe and I think that's as far as they'd go, for now. In the end if they brought in a new race, it's probably end up being vaguely warhammer-y, as the last thing they ever want is to come up with a new race that didn't appeal to anyone.
Can anyone think of any pop-culture tropes that are not already covered by 40K? any at all? we've got Gundam, all eras of military history, Alien, Samurai, Knights coming out of our ears, the hulk/space orks, evil and good space elves, space egyptians... Anything else that could be co-opted and actually sell minis? If so, that's the next race.

Angry post not positive for thread so new post.
One race I have always liked would be and octopoid, multi armed and amphibious, eather alian or mutation :0 or both.
Rules could be awqurd and fast at learning, giving a 2 on there first turn at shooting and close combat, but on the second turn and beyond they have a bonus 2 or more for characters.
Taking tech freek as a upgrade, when you kill a model in close cobat you can take it into your own squad to represent stealing a weapon, as a limit to one.
They can take drop pods full off water as a upgrade making ground within 6 inch swampy and hills, ruins and builds wet and slippery for added affect

Sorry, Apple, but no. Furry is a fetish just like B&D is a fetish.
Just because someone enjoys a good spanking doesn't mean they have no interest in things that don't include spanking, and your argument that Furryism isn't a fetish is based off the same lines.
That said, we already have BDSM Ninja Space Elves as the 'darker and edgier' version of the Psychic Ninja Space Elves, so adding a little fuzz is hardly game (or ground) breaking. Then again, every time GW tries to do something vaguely fetishistic it tends to come across as somewhat sheepish and embarrassing. I totally want a pet simivulpa though.
I'd like to see Loxatl. They smell and they've not been sufficiently described, but the idea of a lasproof army with fletchette guns and weird toys just sounds fun to me.
I'm curious as to what you mean by "foxes that aren't vulpines" though.

How about a species that started as human, but has been seperated for so long that they have completely evolved into a different race. I picture that they would come from an almost prehistoric world with creatures similar to dinosaurs, mammoths, sabretooth tigers etc. They would use primitive weaponry and hunting tools, but would be able to compete with the more futuristic army by having higher toughness, wounds and strength due to the primitive lifestyle. They could employ the use of wildlife instead of vehicles that they would not have. Some would be used as transport, while some would just be pointed at the opponent causing them to rampage through the army causing as much damage as possible. Due to a lack of ranged capabilities they could specialise in close combat and have special abilities such as being able to deploy traps, and be able to arrive from reserve in cover and then assault much like ymgarl genestealers to simulate ambush tactics. Maybe Ogryn sized troops to represent the increased size due to the extreme physicallity of the life they have had to endure. They are loyal to their own tribe and are not allies with any other forces; imperium, xenos or otherwise.
