When I started 40k my first love was Chaos. There was no contesting that at the time, and so starting out the game I built my first 40k army, my Black Legion. Over time my allegiances became more focused and so my army turned to the worship of Khorne, thus my World Eaters were born. Now many years ago I stopped playing 40k at the start of 5th edition and only started again about a year and a half ago. In this time I sold most of my Chaos models and so didn't have many when I started playing anew. I started playing Eldar and Grey Knights, and seemingly my ways had turned to good. But always in the background I had a longing to restart my Chaos legion. I slowly started amassing some more Chaos models to rebuild my legion, but I never got around to using them. Now with the new Codex on the way there is no time like the present and so finally after many years I have started painting Chaos again. This plog is to document my progress with the army.

Now to the theme; Purple Legion. Quite simply I found myself unable to make my mind up once the information about the rules were leaked; Slaanesh or Abaddon list. Unable to decide, I decided to do both. I would build and paint an army with the models necessary to play either my Abaddon list or my Slaanesh list. I've figured out that I prefer the Abaddon list, so am going to build those models first, but definitely want to paint the army in Slaaneshi colours with the theme staying strong. And so the Purple Legion was born.

To start you off, below is a WIP Rhino I've been building for the last week and started painting yesterday. It has the large Slaanesh motif on the side, with a liberal dressing of spikes and skulls; keeping with the whole Chaos thing while not going overboard as so many people do. The inlays at the front are filled in with the bones of their enemies, and on the back is a large sonic organ type mechanation that spews warpflame. To the finish it all, the front of the vehicle sports a Slaanesh style Dozer/Destroyer Blade, made from the lawnmower of the Slaanesh Chariot kit.

I think it looks good. I like how you haven't gone overboard with the spikes like I did when I assembled my Land Raider (it looks awful!).

I learned my lesson back when I started Chaos first; but really what can you expect when the Rhinos on the box look like that?

Looks good...but I really want to know where you got the Skeleton Inlays, they're super neato! Is it Scibor?

"Orkses never lost a battle. If we win we win, if we die we die fighting so it don't count. If we runs for it we don't die neither, cos we can come back for annuver go, see!"

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness.

Really nice idea, I'm going to have to borrow it!

Well I can't take credit for it; I saw it on a plog before here, though for the life of me I can no longer find it.

Should have some more updates in the morning.

Ok so update time. Got some more done on the Rhino. I just have to finish the silvers (WIP in the pics below) and paint the tracks and it will be done. I've also painted my first Marine, in the Slaaneshi colours of course. He is almost finished, just needing lining on the silver/rivets and some basing; incidentally I haven't decided on a basing scheme yet. Any ideas?

So I got me some new toys and have started getting them ready for the army, namely a kit bashed Slaanesh Lord (note the Burning Brand chained to his backpack), and a Heldrake; the Heldrake got some modifications to the back of the model to lengthen it a bit and fill in some of the awful looking exhausts.

Got the basing scheme nailed down as well, with some yellows and greens to make the purple pop. It came out great (no pics of that yet) so thanks to those who pitched in ideas. It was a huge help.

Looking good, I like what you did with the exhaust. As I was a musician in another life, I have plenty of guitar string to do something similar

The Heldrake claws, are you able to glue the claws differently ie make them more dynamic? I hate the way they are in GW pics, but yours look different. It looks like a ball and socket.

Yup, you have to glue two of the claws in on each talon in a ball and socket fashion. You can't close them fully, but you can get close.

So I've been getting a lot of work done on the army this past week; turns out purple is a lot more fun to paint than grey or white. Most importantly, I finished my Lord (albeit he still needs flocking in places).

Really liking the lord, great use of colours and modelling. My only issue is that he doesn't seem very Slaaneshi to me; are you planning on making your marines more obvious followers of Slaanesh or is it intended to be subtle?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'not Slaaneshi mean'. Any suggestion as to what you mean?

i meant that i, personally, feel that your lord could do with being more 'Slaaneshi' in appearance as at the minute nothing really sets him apart from your 'rank-and-file' marine; besides the steed obviously.

Oh I know that, but I meant I don't know what sort of additions you had in mind. What makes a Marine Slaaneshi? any of the stuff in the artwork don't exist in model form; even the Noise Marines don't look all that different to normal marines. I would have liked to give him a big bad-ass cloak (my default HQ thing) but nothing would fit with the steed.

That being said, he's the only one in the army with that particular head, the only one mounted, one of the few with a sword, has all the chains added to his backpack, and has the Sigil crafted to the top of his backpack (none of my other Marines have any trophies).

Oh my mistake, i understand what you meant now.

How good are your sculpting skills? I see from your rhino's organ-thing that you seem to be quite capable. Anyway, have you looked into sculpting things like fur collars, stretched leather around the thigh armour? The sword arm from the upgrade set with the flayed face would look great on the model if you have it to hand, equally the backpack from that set would look good. However, i see that a lot of work has gone into that backpack so that's probably something you aren't bothered about. A slaanesh symbol wouldn't look out of place either, have you seen the shield from the WHFB slaanesh lord on steed? as that would look great AND get a Slaanesh symbol on there. Are you planning on free-handing or putting decals on the armour as Slaanesh is all about decadence and having intricately patterned armour is certainly quite decadent.

Sorry that its a wall of text, i just hope that some of it can be of some use to you!

My scuplting skills go as far as fur; there's no sculpting done of that Rhino. I'm curious to know what you thought I did.

The sword arm from the Noise Marines would be great, except I refuse to work with anything that isn't plastic.

BTW, thanks for all the input.

On closer inspection i see now that the pipes are infact painted green. I think its finecast now which i must say is a lot easier to work with than metal, maybe you should look into it?

I tried Finecast before, and it just broke too easily. It's flimsier than plastic, but as expensive as metal. The worst of the three if you ask me.

really cool slaanesh mount Also quite like the flames coming out of the Helldrake. I was thinking of using drop pod turbines, but that's another cool option there for me to consider

It was more a case that I was assembling it, and thought hey looked stupid, so looked around for random bits on my desk to fill it, and found those brands.

Pulsating Possessed Chaos Marine

Alittle late now, but something that can make a marine look more slaanesh is making them helmetless. Getting blood splashed on their face, seeing their victims anguish with their naked eyes, I'd imagine that a follower of slaanesh would feel trapped and depraved of alot of sensations if they went helmeted.

One more thing is to use more curved swords, since the followers of slaanesh go for a more extravagant and flourished fighting style.

Lastly, remember that Slaanesh is the god of excess, so more nick nacks is the rule

Anyway, I like what you have so far, I'll be looking forward to more!

The curved sword was something I was after but couldn't find any in plastic, and in the end that chainsword was all I had, though that's still an easy swap if I can find an apt replacement in plastic.

Making a curved sword is fairly easy. get hold of the sword from the upgrade sprue and shave down about 2/3rds on the top until it reaches the groove in the middle of the blade. then shave of the groove. finally *carefully* cut the bottom half of the pointy end of the sword and shave it to a curve. If you'd like i could post a picture as i find my own instructions rather confusing...

Sorry all for the lack of updates in awhile; I've been very busy with real life, commisions, and a recent tournament I went to.

I have gotten quite some work done however, I just have to buy batteries for the camera tomorrow and I will post the update then. What to expect; an updated Lord with a new sword arm, the start on my Cultists, some more Marines, and possibly the finished Rhino.

So stay tuned, there's more purple coming your way.
