The Humane Society of North Texas is offering a $500 reward for information on who dumped 92 dogs along country roads in Denton County Monday and Tuesday nights.

in Flower Mound found 51 Maltese mixed-breed dogs late Monday night along a country road near Highway 377 and Stonecrest Road.

Then, late Tuesday night, 41 dogs -- mostly Cavalier King spaniels -- were found along a rural road near Sanger.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Humane Society believes both cases are related -- probably the operators of a puppy mill who no longer want to breed the animals under a strict new state law.

"Unfortunately, there are a few of these really bad breeders who know they're not going to pass inspections and are trying to get out of the business fast," said Peggy Brown, coordinator of community outreach and education for the Humane Society.

The dogs rescued in Flower Mound are being housed in that city's animal shelter.

All of the animals are filthy and may have lived under horrible conditions.

"Unfortunately, with a lot of these puppy mill dogs, their feet may have never touched the ground," Brown said. "They could have spent their whole lives in cages."

Volunteers will bathe the animals in the next few days before putting them up for adoption.

"It's really heartbreaking," Brown said. "Hopefully, we can change their lot in life and give them a better future than their past has been."

Anyone interested in adopting the dogs can contact the Humane Society of North Texas in Fort Worth at 817-332-HSNT or the city animal shelter in Flower Mound at 972-874-6390.

Bastard puppy mill feths. This is just ~10 miles north of me too. Mrs. 'Kikka and I would love to try to adopt one of the Cavaliers (best dog in the world IMO), finances willing.

I never understood the logic of puppy mills. They breed huge quantities of them, but never sell that many. The math doesn't add up.

We have them here in PA as well, many of them run by the Amish, who are notorious for treating their animals like gak.

I urge dakkanauts to avoid them like the plague and if they want a dog, get one from the shelter instead. Save a little fuzzball from the slammer.

Cruelty to dogs is a special kind of sleaze. Dogs as a species are our very closest companions. To me, abusing them strikes home harder than the abuse of any other species including apes. This is not to downplay the abuse of other animals but just to suggest how much further disgusting it is to pay dogs back for their patience, friendship, vigilance, and trust with very nearly the basest treatment the human species can muster.

I find the difference in reactions between this thread and the thread about horses kind of interesting.

Sucks about the dogs, though. I think the Romans were on to something with some of their methods of punishment.

I'll lend you a few dozen in this instance.

Seriously, I hope they get prosecuted by a prosecutor who thinks this is a great way to make a name for himself.

I asked my own Cavalier what she thinks should happen to the people responsible, should they get caught:

Hey, Dogs were one of the first domestic animals used for food

They're the perfect animal companion, loyal, helpful, and tasty.

If that "dog eat dog" sentiment is anywhere close to accurate then apparently they're self feeding/replenishing as well. I can smell a business model.

I heard about that on the radio too. Not to far away from me either.

Also d'aww, I'm not familiar with the breed by name but I'm sure they will go fast.

One day I plan to get a mob (3) of small fluffy dogs. Alas, I don't think now is the time.

It was a thread I made about BLM wild mustangs being illegally shipped off for slaughter, I believe the comment is in reference to how quick everyone is to defend dogs vs. the common reaction of "Well there's a lot of horses... and we can eat them..." in that thread. (barring a couple horse people like me)

Back on topic puppy mills are absolutely despicable. I dearly hope all these dogs find good homes and the scum responsible for putting the dogs in such horrible circumstances to start with are caught.... preferably by Frazzled and the wiener dog cavalry.

I wouldn't say all "Puppy Mills" are bad. I know some people that operate one, they're nice and the Dogs are well cared for. They don't churn out tons of Pups though. They do maybe a couple dozen Pups a year, high end Labradoodles are expensive and in demand.

The point being, properly managed, a Dog breeding business is perfectly legit. Purebred dogs are better then the common Mutts that irresponsable people allow to come around.

Aren't they more susceptible to hereditary issues and the like? I've heard mutts are heartier usually.

But that doesn't make some of the more ugly ones any prettier. Neither does it excuse us as people for letting it happen.

Some breeds do have issues, notably Bully breeds and sinus problems(Pugs, Bulldogs, etc...)

Responsable dog breeders are what is required. Genetics must be monitored and populations need to be kept under control.

See I think that there is a HUUUUUGE difference between Puppy Mill and Breeders. I have a family friend who when I was younger was quite sought after round my neck of the US for her bred and "certified" (or whatever the term in dog world is) Jack Russell Terriers. She actually had waiting lists, and had an interview system set up to where, if she even suspected that any one of the pups that she bred were going to an even slightly shady home, the deal was off.

When I think of a breeder, I dont think of a large amount of dogs/puppies running wild, being ill kept in their environments. I think of the people who love dogs as much as the future owner hopefully does, and lives accordingly. Most of the puppy mill coverage that I have seen is quite the opposite... Usually they are the hillbilly type or the dog fighter type of person who views them as property rather than a companion, friend or family.

Puppy Mill is probably more of a slur name that gets applied to dog breeders that do all those horrible things.

Puppy mills are literally that an operation designed to mass produce puppies. Small breeders like your friend with the Labradoodle are the exact opposite.

My Aunt Breeds Dogs and let me tell you, Breeders and puppy mills are totally different, Puppy mills work like factories. Breeders take care of dogs. My aunt said that most breeders Keep track of dogs they sold to make sure it is never put in a shelter or aboneded, and they do more background checks then probably most of you have for alot of your jobs.
