Just wanted to say that this was a great tournament, hosted extremely well, the place was exceptional, the buffet food was good, the missions were good, the competitions were good, the entire tournament was exactly on schedule and actually got the final tallies early so the tournament ended early! GW also got the Battle Bunker (awesome) to stay open an hour late so the out of town people could check out the place. Everyone that did not go because it was in Memphis instead of somewhere else like Vegas really missed out on an extremely well executed and professional experience, and tournament that I expected from Games Workshop. The GW guys were all so nice and knowledgable the games and about more things than I ever would have guessed right down to finecast, the whys, how's, just everything.

This tournament made me a believer on every move GW makes right down to the increase of models. I am eve about to buy a realm of battle board because of the tournament... So thank you GW for the positive experience, thank you to my opponents I played (and the help on some rules I did not understand fully), and lastly thank you to everyone that attended to help make the tournament great by bring such positive attitudes to the gaming arena.

GW will be hosting games day and throne of skulls in Memphis next year as well so start saving pennies.

For $50.00 you got:

5 games on solid GW terrain
2 breakfasts (great spread... as much as you wanted)
2 lunches (great spread... as much as you wanted)
Free beer at the place on saturday for like 3-4 hours.

The rules answers were good and well argued and the individuals running it were the type of people I have come to expect from GW... i.e. gregarious people you would be glad to be friends with. Also, because it was a tournament, it was more adult friendly.

Also got the news that Games Day this year will be in Memphis on the 27th of July this year FYI.

That's a common misconception that I wish people would stop repeating.

Jonestown was Flavor Aid, not Kool-Aid.

...you had me at "free beer".

Okay, maybe I can make it down to Memphis next year.

But seriously, I really enjoyed the one in Vegas, and if the level of organization and included food and drinks remains that good, I really would like to make it to another of these. I'm sad I couldn't use the ticket I won to this one, because the schedule conflicted with another event I really wanted to attend, which was much closer to home and less expensive to attend due to relative travel distances.

As someone who has been waiting on Tau Broadside Upgrade packs for three months now and still haven't gotten them as a result of multiple casting failures, I literally laughed aloud after reading this.

Whatever they put in the free food and drinks is highly illegal I fear.

If it was in Vegas, I would be there in a heartbeat.

The problem with Throne of Skulls is that it is not a tournament that you would go to for a serious game of 40k, but more of a hobbist event where you would hang out with a bunch of guys and have fun. That is why Vegas is perfect for this, and Mephis isn't. They had other events last weekend that drew the people who would travel to these types of events, and so the ToS turnout was pretty low.

They only had 24 players, and they played on the GW Realm of Battle Boards which are not my favorite.

And Acyee71 had to say from this post: http://the11thcompany.freeforums.org/throne-of-skulls-12-t4312.html
Long story short...Throne of Skulls is not designed or ran as competitive tournament. For example, I scored the best in W/L/D but the other Necron player get the best Necron General and even he was confused on how that happened. By that point I didn't care. There is no prize support, but the event was catered with breakfast and lunch each day and also had free beer on Saturday night. The good thing about the weekend is a meet some old friends and made some new. I do have the moral satisfaction of having beat the guy who did win the Throne of Skulls award. Would I go again? If it's in Memphis again and if I could convince some of my local buddies to go to off set the hotel costs...yes

So if I lived near Memphis I would go, but otherwise I would not.

Wow I might go to one of these finally. Is the scoring still based on how your faction did?

Ok after reading the post before mine I see it is. Oh well if it was local I would happily go. They should bring it back to Vegas.

Everything this guy said is true. For those of you who say 'we drank the koolaid' well I feel sorry for you. This was a great event.
Another thing on top of the free beer, they also did proffesional photographs for our armies.

btw Kal-El, I told you there, but congrats on the best painted!
I really wish that weekend didn't end. There were so many people I wanted play against that I didn't get a chance. But I did like that the 5 rounds all had plenty of time to play and actually finish games.

Hey thank you very much! I did not want the weekend to end either! You did a fine job on your DA also; I looked at them multiple times =)

No need to feel sorry; everyone (even crusty old Blackmoor) is willing to believe it was a great event. Now, statements like "This tournament made me a believer on every move GW makes right down to the increase of models" are going to draw a certain amount of skeptical responses....

The only real problem with the Throne of Skulls is that Memphis is not a great place to travel to. It's a tier 2 airport, so I can't get a direct flight from the west coast, and it isn't an obvious destination city, either. I'm certain it was a much cheaper place to have the event than Vegas, but I also suspect they could have stuck with the $100 admissions in Vegas and still sold 3x the tickets.

As far as the comment about the price increases, I had a sit down with several of the GW guys there from main HQ (couple guys 45 mins worth of conversation), and the price increase I asked directly about.

There response was right on the money with the explanation of molding processes, price of tin (key element in pewter) going up, economy struggles such as cost of fuel, etc..it made 100% sense to me. It still does lol.

I also enjoyed playing on the realm of battle so much I did in fact buy one when I found out my 6 year old could put her weight on it and not break it. I am about to teach her the dark vengence game, and I am putting the table on the floor for her level and going to let her get on the table if needed to move the guys.

If I wasn't a college student, I'd probably get a board to play on too. Also, the amount of terrain that GW provided for the tournament was astounding to me. I'm not used to so much terrain on a board.

Good luck teaching the little one, maybe I should try teaching my little 8 yr old brother. I'd just be worried about fragile models and clumsy kid hands.
